Can I Use Bleach To Clean Any Paving Blocks

The use of bleach is hugely beneficial for cleaning pavers. The substance not only helps to remove more superficial stains, but also removes moss, algae, and even weeds. One of the most positive aspects of using bleach for cleaning pavers is that it does not require the use of power washing afterwards. Best of all, you can easily find the substance in most homes. Even if you dont have bleach at home, you can still obtain and buy it at any convenience store.

However, it is essential to state that the use of bleach is not suitable for all types of pavers. To make things easier for you, we decided to list below what are the situations in which we do not indicate the use of the cleaning substance:

  • For human-made colored concrete paving slabs or concrete pavers, we dont recommend the use of bleach for cleaning. Thats because the substance could fade your paver colors if regularly cleaned with bleach over a long period. However, if you dont mind this, then there will be no problems.
  • We dont recommend you use bleach near areas where there are plants and greenery. The substance is potentially toxic to them and can kill them. Make sure that there are no plants close to the area where you will clean, nor that the water can run off to places close to them. If its not possible to avoid this, water the plants well before and after cleaning the pavers with bleach.

Refill The Joints With Sand

Proper Technique for Cleaning your Brick Patio

After cleaning and your paved area is now dry, refill the joints with sand. Open up your bag of sand and pour some of it onto a small area of the paved surface. Use a stiff bristled brush to sweep the sand all over on the paved surface.

Once you have spread out all the sand into the brick paver joints, mist some water over the brick pavers. This will allow the sand to settle in between the paver joints. While misting the sand, avoid saturating the pavers to prevent washing away the newly laid sand.

Fallback On Commercial Cleaning Products

If vinegar or bleach do not work, or you would prefer to move directly to a commercial solution, you should have no trouble finding effective products at your local garden center or home improvement store.

You can opt for a simple patio or deck wash-type of product that is used for general cleaning if your mold or algae problem is mild. If your hardscape has been stained from the mold or algae, you may need to opt for a mold stain remover. For example, if you just purchased a home where mold or algae has been allowed to flourish for an extended period of time on concrete, brick or paving stones, there may be stains that require a product specifically designed for mold and algae stain removal.

With most of these products, you will spray the area, allow it to work its magic for a few minutes, scrub with a deck brush or push broom, and then rinse the area with water.

    Remove Weed And Moss Growth

Weeds and moss tend to grow between brick paver joints especially when there is plenty of decomposing matter, soil or dirt on your patio or driveways. Use a brush to agitate and remove moss and gently pull weeds using your hands or with the help of any tool without damaging or separating the pavers.

You may also use other methods of killing weeds between pavers if they are many or tough to remove manually. A commercial weed killer or a homemade roundup may also be applied to permanently get rid of any vegetation prior to cleaning. How Do You Prevent Mold From Growing On Concrete

Cleaning the Patio Bricks (20 June 2012)

The best way to solve a mold problem on concrete is to prevent it from happening in the first place. One way to do this is by eliminating the key element mold needs to grow, moisture.

For concrete patios, driveways, and walks, cut back foliage that creates shady areas on a driveway or walk that never see the sun.

Also, check for cracks in the pavement that can collect water and cause mold growth. Fill these cracks using a concrete repair product.

For areas where this isnt possible, consider treating the concrete with an acrylic sealer designed for outdoor use. This prevents moisture from penetrating the driveway or walk, eliminating the environment mold needs to thrive.

For indoor areas, fix leaky pipes that are causing mold growth. For basements that flood, consider using a product such as Drylok to prevent moisture from entering the basement when it rains.

If that isnt an option, a dehumidifier is also an excellent means of keeping the humidity level in a basement in check, preventing mold growth. Remove materials that can get wet and breed mold growth, such as cardboard, wood, cloth furnishing, and area rugs.

Also, check the areas around the foundation of the home. If the earth is not properly graded to cause water to flow away from the house when it rains, grading may be required. Keep leaves and other debris from piling up around the foundation, which can trap water and direct it through the foundation and into the basement.

    Cleaning Bluestone With Vinegar

If your bluestone or stone pavers change color with bleach, use undiluted 5 percent white vinegar to clean the pavers. Apply the cleaning solution to the pavers and scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush.

When youre done, rinse thoroughly with clean water. You may have to repeat application of the bleach solution to remove all of the stains on your pavers.

Use A Pressure Washer On The Bricks

Perhaps youre uncomfortable using chemicals on living things, or maybe your bricks are filthy and require a full-on cleaning. In these sorts of situations, pressure washing is just what you need to get the job done. A pressure sprayer exerts enough force on the brick to clean away dirt, grime, and any mildew or moss that might have taken root.

    • Gloves

Put on your safety gear, and get dressed in your long pants and long-sleeved shirt. Always follow the pressure washer manufacturers instructions so that you remain eligible for support if anything goes wrong or an issue arises. Spray the bricks with the power washer from the top down to the bottom.

Make sure to get in any crevices or corners. Use a scrub brush to hit hard-to-reach spots. When you finish your power washing, your bricks will look the way they did when you bought them at the home improvement store.

If you notice moss in a shady corner of the lawn, you can kill moss in your yard easily by simply hand-pulling it up. Since the roots are not deep, the moss comes right up. Immediately add some grass seed to the area to discourage further moss growth.

We hope you had a dynamite time reviewing our moss removal suggestions. Bricks add a look of class and solidity to any home, but bricks and moisture can sometimes equal moss. Our guide gives you the tools you need to keep your bricks moss free and looking like you just laid them yesterday.
