    Good question!

    I have never had much luck using standard paint for painting outdoor furniture. It always seem to chip and needs to be re-painted often.

    Which is why I chose to go with spray paint for this project.

    It also gets the job done a lot faster, dries quicker and it doesnt seem to wear off as easily. Even if it does start to fade, its really easy to do touch ups by getting out another can of spray paint.

    My go-to spray paint for this kind of project is Rustoleum*. It has a primer built in which makes the job go even faster. As long as your furniture isnt too rusty, you dont need anything else.

    I also chose to go with a flat paint . Thats because its easier to get the finish to look right. And if you do need to do some touch-ups in the future, they blend right in.

    Wicker furniture displays a classic and romantic look in an outdoor setting, but it may fade over time. But you can definitely give your outdoor wicker furniture a fresh new look. Giving it a fresh new coat of paint may also help it last longer.

    Make sure you use spray paint though, as spray painting is best for the joints and the narrow spaces in between the material of your wicker furniture. Preparing the wicker furniture is key to getting a good quality finish and a smoother painting job. Figure out what material is the wicker furniture you are painting made of because various types of wicker require different methods of cleaning and preparation. Also, make sure that you use spray paint that is designed for your outdoor use.

    What Type Of Paint Or Stain To Use

    Lets look at the difference between paint and stain and what exact types of these materials fit better for outdoor wood.

    Paint is sitting on top of your wood and hides its grain, whereas stain soaks in it. Also, stain looks better than paint over the years because its more likely to fade than peel. So, if youd like to keep the woods grain, we recommend you use a stain rather than a paint.

    • Shake the spray can before painting according to instructions.
    • Holding the can about eight inches from furniture and spray a light coat. Multiple light coats will have a better appearance than one or two heavy coats. A paint sprayer may also be effective.

    Oil-Based Paint

    Oil-based paint is not that easy to use when compared to other types of outdoor furniture paints. But oil-based paint helps make your wood furniture more durable over time. The oil-based finish does not chip as easily as some types of paint do. Keep in mind though, that this type of paint clings on the furniture better when you brush it on instead of using a roller. Oil-based paint also leaves fewer visible brushstrokes after they dry. Another plus of using oil-based paint is that it usually does not require any additional topcoats.

    Outdoor Latex Paint

    Latex is one of the easiest paints to use for wooden furniture. Outdoor latex paint provides ultraviolet protection for your outdoor wooden furniture. This protects the color and finish of your furniture during the warm summer months. Latex, however, does not offer as much durability as oil-based paint does.

    Velvet Finishes

    Velvet finishes provide a built-in topcoat, great adhesion, and long-lasting durability. It also does not require much preparatory work. Using velvet finishes generally needs no sanding and priming preparations.

    In one word VERY!

    We used this patio furniture for almost 4 years before changing it out.;

    This painted patio furniture stood out in the Southern California sun and rain in an uncovered patio for 2.5 years, followed by a covered patio for about 18 months.;

    Over time, it got washed down many times!;

    At the end of the 4 years, the back of one of the chairs had a crack, but the paint looked as good as the day it was painted.;

    Obviously, I had to build a matching outdoor coffee table to go with my patio set. It only cost $15 and I have the plans available for you!;

    What Is The Best Paint To Use On Outdoor Wood Furniture

    If your furniture is flexible wood with movement, such as wicker, youll need to be sure to use oil-based paint. Oil paints have more flexibility and wont peel and crack with motion. For solid wood that has no flex, either oil or latex paint is fine.

    In either case, start with an exterior primer and follow with exterior-grade paint. Spray paint marked for outdoor use is fine and convenient for refinishing outdoor furniture. Alternatively, you might prefer to use a stain instead. To compare the two, see Staining Vs. Painting for Outdoor Wooden Surfaces.

    A combined paint and primer like this one would work. Its available in multiple colors and finishes:

    What If My Furniture Is Rusty

    If you have metal furniture sitting outside, its probably going to get rusted eventually. We live in a very wet climate, so metal surfaces dont stand a chance.

    STEP 1: Sand

    Use a metal sanding sponge to remove loose rust as much as possible. You can also use steel wool or a wire brush, if you have that on hand.

    STEP 2: Clean

    Wipe the rust off really well with a damp cloth.

    You need to remove any loose paint or rust as well as dirt, dust, or cobwebs.

    This is an annoying step but anything left behind will be painted over and result in a bumpy finish.

    If your furniture seems to rust easily, you will definitely want to use a metal primer before re-painting. Look for a spray primer paint that specifically says rust on the bottle.

    How To Prime Metal Furniture

    Using the right product for your situation is essential. I use a few different primers, depending on the condition of the piece:

    • For bare metal Clean Metal Primer
    • Galvanized Steel or Tricky surfaces Universal Bonding Primer
    • For rusty surfaces that cant be sanded Rust Reformer. I havent actually used this one without sanding, however it gets rave reviews. Personally, I would be too nervous not to sand.)
    • For surfaces exposed to high heat or in full sun High Heat Primer Spray. Ive used it for a grill we repainted, for example.

    You may notice that all of these are Rustoleum because I have consistent success with many of their product lines. Many of these primers come in several colors.

    If none of the above situations apply, you actually dont need to use a full primer. Often times, I only prime the areas that need a touch up if the old paint is in good condition.
