How To Decorate A Small Patio: Dont Forget About Ambient Lighting
This is the last step to my five step pyramid approach when thinking about how to decorate a small patio. As always lighting is of the major importance. Hence, it is absolutely necessary to add in ambient lighting to set the mood. Now if your space is large enough, then you definitely need to add more lighting sources as guide tracking lights to and fro your outdoor space to complete your design scheme.
Lanterns are probably the most common choices for ambient lighting. However, strings of fairy lights on your greenery or as a canopy over your conversation pit will surely add an undeniable charm.
At this point, I would like to mention an extra element a focal point. Many opt for a focal point like an outdoor fireplace, a clutter of mirrors or a ceramic wall hanging. Personally, I dont think it is necessary and that is why I did not include it in my basic five step pyramid process.
However, if you should feel that something is missing, then I strongly urge you to try introducing an element of fun with a twist that will create just that. For example, a bunch of artificial butterflies scattered over a single beautiful plant is a subtle addition that can be quite eye-catching and will not break the bank.

Kinda wimpy, huh? This small patio has always been really tricky since space is very limited. Our 10×10 slab of concrete really needed some love. I know so many people, especially those of us who live in the stock builder subdivision neighborhoods, often have this typical setup.

No matter where I have lived, even in apartments, I have always wanted to have at least a little bit of outdoor space where I could go to unwind when the weather is nice.
Since Im a city girl, however, most of the places I have lived havent had a lot of room for large decks or patios. And I always felt like those small and crowded outdoor spaces cramped my outdoor living style.
So when I moved into my current house , I decided to build a deck and patio that would be big enough to handle all of my entertaining needs. And it does.
But you know what else I found? A really large open area feels really big and empty when you dont have a lot of people around I came to the realization that smaller patios and decks are more cozy and inviting.
