Creative Ways To Add Shade To Your Pergolas

Pergolas are unique structures that have been in use for hundreds of years. They were originally used to train vines to grow over the top, which created a type of canopy and shade for the user.

Today, pergolas are often left open to add definition to an area. They may also have covers, canopies, or other types of top added that can provide shade.

Pergola tops come in a wide range of styles both permanent and temporary, and can add a lot of style, interest, and function to your outdoor design. If youre wondering how to incorporate shade into the pergola that youre building, check out these 11 pergola sun shade ideas:

Sew Fabric And Attach Drapery Rings

DIY: Retractable Pergola Canopy Tutorial

In this step, you are first going to hem the edge of your fabric to avoid fraying and for a more finished look. To do this, fold the fabric over at least one-half inch and sew around the unfinished edge. Next, attach your drapery rings near the edges of your fabric in accordance with the measurement between the screw eyes. The distance between your drapery rings will depend on how much you want the fabric to drape between them. If you chose drapery rings without clips, you will need to sew them in place. For a no-sew option, use drapery rings with clips so that you can simply clip them onto the fabric.

What we’ll need to do first is source a track runner system to fit underneath or inside both sides of the support rafters, so you’ll need two.

It’s important that we’re able to attach rigid tubing, rods or strengthening supports securely to the sliding mechanism carriers that hang below the track from one side to the other .

Here are some examples to give you ideas.

For our canopy, we will attach the material to tubing to give it rigidity across the canopy width and then attach these tubes, at right angles, to the tracks by hooking them through the eyes of the button carriers on one side of the pergola to the button carriers on the opposite side. They can also be attached with some sort of hoop or hook if the tube is too big for the carrier.

Alternatively, Simply use a wire as shown in the pre-made version, simply running the shades along the wires to extend the shade or retract it.

Either use shower-proof material, like the ones used in the pergola kits, or go for a water-proof fabric .

However, these canopies are only intended to be a protection against sun and light showers. The channels that the drooping fabric creates help to prevent water gathering on the canvas.

Install The Wire Rope On The Eye Screws

Fit a thimble through one of the eye screws. Slide the end of one of each wire rope through the eye screw and over the thimble. At the other end of the wire rope, fit a clamp over the rope and slide it up to the thimble area.

With a wrench, tighten down the wire rope so that it forms a tight loop over the thimble. Repeat for the other two wire ropes and eye screws.

Measure and mark where you want to place the screw eyes on all four corners of your pergola before you begin to install them. This way, you can make sure they are all in the same spot. You will need to install one hook on the interior of a corner post in each corner of your pergola. This is what you will be running the wire rope through.

Shade Sail Canopy For A Pergola

These can be very attractive, with a modern, sleek appearance, and act as a very effective canopy for a pergola.

Supplied as pre-manufactured kits, they are a convenient way to add an attractive feature to your garden quickly. Buy the sail with the attachment kit, and you’ll be up and running in no time.

However, the smallest shade sails tend to be around 3m square. If your pergola is smaller, it’s easy enough to make your own.

Do make sure that the supporting structure is strong enough to take the tension on the sails.

You will need:

  • Some shower-proof or waterproof material. You may wish to have fabric that also has UV protection.
  • Strong metal rings to fit onto the corners of the sail itself. these will attach to…
  • 3 or 4 Pad Eyes, depending on whether your shade sail is triangular or rectangular. You will need a strong structure on which to attach these as the tensioning pressure is great.
  • 3 or 4 Snap Hooks that join the metal rings attached to your shade sail to the supporting structure pad eyes.
  • A tensioner.
  • Fixing kits contain all that you need to fix both triangular and square shade sails.

Here is a triangular shade sail canopy for a pergola…

…and here is a pergola kit with rectangular shade sails attached…

Either use the metal fixing kit mentioned above, or alternatively use a strong hook, and make loops for the hook to pass over.

You may need something strong to lever the last loop over the hook in order to create the tension needed

    Select A Canopy Fabric

    pergola canopy

The best canopy fabric for your pergola will vary depending on a number of factors, including the weather in your area and your shade preference.

  • Sailcloth: Water-resistant, durable, and attractive, 100-percent acrylic or nylon ripstop sailcloth is a favorite choice for do-it-yourselfers building pergola canopies. Look for sailcloth in 6-foot widths. Sailcloth is colorfast and dries quickly.
  • Mesh privacy screen: UV-rated polypropylene mesh is often used as a privacy screen for fencing. Highly durable and available in only a few basic colors, one benefit of mesh privacy screen is that does not collect water. Privacy mesh screen offers only partial shading.
  • Muslin or linen: Muslin and linen are 100-percent organic fabrics that loosely drape for a casual, gorgeous coastal look. Use these fabrics only in dry conditions, as both readily soak up moisture and dry slowly. Muslin and linen are not durable in exterior conditions and usually are only good for one season.

    Fabric Top Pergola Covers

There are several choices of fabric for covering a pergola. Of course, you cant just throw a piece of cloth over the pergola. You need a way to secure it and if you live in a snowy climate a way to easily remove it for the winter.

One obvious method is to put grommets around the perimeter and tie the cover on with cord or rope. If youre handy with a sewing machine, you may be able to sew a cover yourself. Otherwise, you can order custom-made covers from places like thenaturalhome.com.

The fabric pergola awning in this photo, from the March 03 issue of The Family Handyman, is easily removable. We sewed a full-length pocket along two edges of the fabric, slid ½-in. metal conduit into the pockets, and held the cover on with the hook-and-loop straps sewn to the awning. The cover is easy to install and remove, and rolls up for storage.

You can also purchase retractable pergola awnings. Keep it closed for a shady escape or open it to catch some sun rays.

    How To Make A Slide

Add extra shade and style to your outdoor living space with a wire-hung canopy system. These billowing shades easily slide on the cables they hang from so you can have shade when you want it and retract them when you want a little more sun. A wire-hung canopy can be installed on any pergola or other freestanding structure. Our comprehensive video will show you step-by-step how to sew your own canopy panels and install them on a pergola.

To make planning your slide-on wire-hung canopy easier, we created a new Wire-Hung Canopy Fabric Calculator just for this project. By inputting the dimensions of your structure and the width of your fabric youll not only get a fabric rendering, but youll also get a breakdown of how to build your canopy and a complete, custom materials list based on your measurements.

When it comes to choosing a fabric for this project, we recommend using either Phifertex® Plus or Sunbrella® Marine Grade. Both provide good shade and durability out in the elements. If you choose to use Sunbrella Marine Grade, though, you will need to install drainage grommets in the center of each span so rainwater wont gather on the panels. Since Phifertex Plus is a mesh, it will drain the water on its own, making the grommet unnecessary.

    Add Foliage Or Live Plants

Live foliage or plants is an excellent option for homeowners who want extra shade but dont need rain protection. Having a lush foliage collection for your pergola will enhance the style while also adding a bit of sun protection.

The possibilities are endless with this method, with dozens of plant options. If you want to add foliage to your pergola, here are some of the best options for coverage and appearance:

    • Trumpet Vine
    • Bougainvillea
    • Wisteria

Vines are the best plant to run across the top of the pergola, creating a shade for relaxation. Along with vines, you can add plants to the pillars or even hang potted plants for a complete garden design.

However, its important to note that the fallen leaves or flower petals will require more cleaning than the other methods on this list.

Attach The Support Bars To The Canopy

    Pin on DIY2

Stretch the canopy out on a clean surface. Using the tape measure and tailor’s chalk or a carpenter’s pencil, lightly mark intended support bar locations along the sides of the canopy. For the canopy to slide properly, the support bars must be parallel to each other and all bars should be perpendicular to the sides of the canopy. Support bars should be located at each extreme end of the canopy, as well. At each pair of marks, slide a support bar under the canopy and staple the canopy to the bar. Repeat for every set of marks.
