How To Fix A Door Thats Rubbing On The Door Sill
If the patio slider is rubbing on the bottom sill plate you can usually tell because the sill plate is worn shiny from the constant scraping it. Typically a die cast patio roller housing will break or an axle will wear through and the doorpanel will drop down.
Sometimes the rubbing can be fixed by finding the patio roller adjusting screws which raise the roller and tightening them. You will often see a small access hole often near the bottom of the edges of the patio slider. There should be an adjustment screw inside.
Do not remove the adjustment screw ! Some patio roller assemblies fall apart when you take the screw out. Then you will have to remove the door and change the roller.
To make it easier to turn the adjusting screw, put a flat blade screwdriver underneath the patio slider and take the weight off the roller by lifting and holding the door up by 1/4 inch.
If you cant turn the screw try squirting some penetrating oil on the screw. Let it soak in and then try to loosen the screw again. If you still cant turn the screw you will need to remove the bottom of the patio slider and replace the patio door roller.
Remove The Door From The Track
First things first: before you can check the track or wheels for damage, you have to remove the screen door from the track. Your door should have two adjustment screws near each bottom corner of the frame. Turn these screws counterclockwise to loosen the wheels and lower the door.
With the door lowered, reach down and raise one wheel out of the door track using your fingers or a flathead screwdriver. You should then be able to lift the entire door up and pull the bottom edge out of the bottom track. Remove the top of the door from its track by pulling down. Place the door on a large table or balance it on a pair of sawhorses so you can examine and replace the wheels.
Push The New Screen In
- Begin installing the new spline at a corner.
- Use the screen rolling tool to push the spline and screen material into the groove.
- Continue around the frame. If wrinkles or bulges appear, remove the spline and re-roll.
- Small wrinkles should tighten up as you get back to the starting corner.
- Trim excess screen material using a utility knife with a new sharp blade.
- A dull blade will pull the material, not cut it.
- Cut with the blade on top of the spline and pointed toward the outside of the frame.

Remove Screen Molding And Screen Fabric
Replacing screen material in a wood-framed window and door requires that you first remove trim molding in order to expose the staples or nails that hold the screen fabric.
Using a flat-blade screwdriver or wood chisel, carefully separate the screen molding from around the frame opening. Take care not to break the molding while prying it off. Pull out the brads from the molding if you plan to reuse it.
Use the flat-blade screwdriver to pry the staples up that fasten the screen material to the frame, then remove the old screen material.
Fasten And Trim The Screen Fabric
Attach the screen fabric to the frame with staples spaced every 2 inches along the full perimeter of the opening. Use a sharp utility knife to trim away the excess screen material to within 1/2 inch of the staples.
Reattach the screen molding with small finishing nails or brads. If the old molding is in poor condition, this is a good time to cut and install new screen molding. If any screen fabric is extending beyond the molding, you can carefully trim it off with a utility knife.
To prevent rusting of the nails, countersink the nails and putty over them. If desired, you can also repaint the frame at this time.

What Kind Of Sliding Door Screen Do You Have

The first sign of a patio screen door that needs repair is often improper rolling on the door track. A few simple steps can be taken to correct this problem. Another common repair need is screen material that has become worn or ripped. There are two different types of screening material: aluminum or fiberglass. Each of these needs special consideration if replacing screen material is part of this DIY repair project.
Step 1 – Remove the Door and Clean Tracks
Carefully remove the screen door by holding the door firmly on either side, lifting up, and tilting the bottom edge outward towards you. You may have to lift the small wheels out of the track to completely free the door do this with your flat screwdriver, and be sure not to pry too hard. Otherwise, the wheels could become damaged.
Once you have successfully removed the screen door, clean out any debris from the track with your cleaning brush. Often, leaves, small rocks, and other obstructions build up in door tracks, and you may have to dig these out with the screwdriver. After all debris and dirt are removed, spray a small amount of silicone spray into the door track and go over it with your steel wool pad.

Affix Patch Over Hole
Place the screen patch over the hole in the plastic or fiberglass screen so that the hole is completely covered with enough left on each side to fold over the ends of the patch.

In older homes, insect screens in wooden frames often cover window and door openings during the warmer months, and when those screens get torn or worn out, replacing them offers a bit of a challenge. It’s possible to take them to a hardware store and have them rescreened, or you can buy a roll of screening and replace the fabric yourself. At one time, window screening was usually a metal fabric, but today it’s more common to use screening made of fiberglass mesh, which is more durable and easier to install than metal screening.
Bug Strip For Sliding Screen Door
The pictures below show the steps required to install a new bug strip for sliding screen door.
Most screen doors are 7/16 inch thick with a space all around the frame that allows the bugstrip to be pushed into.
The bug strip gets installed on the side of the door opposite the lock, where it seals the gap from top to bottom between the screen door and the patio door.
The gap can be different from one door to the next so you need some way of adjusting the width of the strip.
On the seals that I use, the vinyl material has grooves precut so that if you cut a notch in the top of the groove, you can peel a strip off the bugstrip from one end to the other.
Trim the strip so its just a little bigger than the gap you have to fill. If you leave it too wide it will drag on the patio door and make it hard to open and close the screen door.
Once the width is right, you just push the square part of the bugstrip into the groove all the way up the height of the screen door. Trim the strip so it stops just before the tracks on the top and bottom of the slding screen.
