How to Make Old Concrete Look New! Painting Concrete Patio DIY!

Almost any concrete surface thats in sound condition can be painted. That includes interior floors and walls as well as exterior surfaces such as patios, sidewalks, and pool decks. Just make sure the surface is clean and free of existing coatings or sealers that could prevent the paint from adhering.

Because concrete paint is a surface coating and vulnerable to abrasion, its not the best choice for high-traffic areas such as concrete driveways. For these applications, an acid-based stain or dry-shake color hardener will offer better wear-resistance.

How Long Does Concrete Paint Last Outside

Most major brands of paint nowadays are quite durable with bonding primers and acrylic and epoxy formulas that can take a beating, so dont be afraid to paint your porch or patio floor for fear it wont last.

If you prep an outdoor concrete floor correctly by power washing and letting it dry, then applying the paint in thin coats, and letting each coat of paint dry completely before applying the next coat, a painted concrete floor can last years.

How to Paint and Stencil a Concrete Porch or Patio Floor using a Cutting Edge Design Stencil.

  • Prep Concrete Floor

Power wash the floor or scrub well with hot water and detergent or TSP. Rinse well and let dry.

  • Add a Coat of Concrete Primer

This is an important step, so dont skip it. Roll on one coat of concrete primer. It goes on white, but will dry clear. Let dry for one hour. After one to four hours you will need to add the first coat of paint.

  • Roll On Base Coat of Paint

When stenciling a floor you need two colors of paint. Use a 1/2 nap paint roller to apply one light coat of base paint color. Let dry. Apply second coat of base color paint and let dry at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • Figure Out Where To Start Stenciling

When using a stencil you need to figure out where the best place is to start. Make sure to read the directions that come with the stencil. You want to consider what part of the floor you see first as this is where you want to make sure a full tile shows up. Then against a far wall would be where the stencil ends and it may not be a full tile.

  • Let Dry

Check the dry time on the paint label on how long you need to let it dry before walking over it or placing furniture back on.

How To Paint A Concrete Porch

Step 1. Pressure wash the porch & let it dry. We had a small pressure washer that worked great for cleaning off our covered porch. But unfortunately my husband broke it while spraying off the porch furniture, so Im eyeing this pressure washer for our next purchase.

Step 2. Tape off anything you dont want painted with painters tape. I dont do this step because Im pretty good at using free hand with my Purdy brush. But if youre not sure if you can keep paint off your brick or other parts of your home, use the tape!

Step 3. Apply 1 coat of Valspars Concrete Binding Primer. Allow it to dry 1-4 hours before applying your paint. This stuff went on like a glue, which was a transparent white color. But then dried clear. It was dried to the touch after about 2 hours. You will want to follow the instructions on the can, which say to apply the paint within 4 hours of applying the binding primer.

Step 4. Apply 2 coats of Valspars Porch, Floor and Patio latex paint. Youll want to make the decision whether or not to do 2 coats. Mine was mostly fine after the first coat, but I like a 2nd coat just for good measure. Let the first coat dry overnight before painting the 2nd coat.

Step 5. Wait 72 hours before you move your furniture back onto the porch.

    Thats it! Yay!!!

It was such a simple and easy process. Im not sure why it took me so long to get it done! If youre on the fence to change your patio with a little bit of paint just go for it!

Just about any surface can be transformed with a fresh coat of paint, and concrete is no exception. Depending on the application and the look you want to achieve, paint is a viable option for adding instant color to lackluster gray concrete.

But is painting concrete a good idea? And if you do decide to paint, what are the best products to use? Read on to get answers to these and other common questions about painting concrete.

    Wash The Affected Area

Use your garden hose to carefully spray the affected area. Pressurized water often works its way into the concretes air holes to help remove stubborn paint.

    6. Repeat

After the affected area has dried, assess the damage. If there is still paint that needs to be removed, repeat steps two through four. You may continue to reapply the paint stripper until all the paint has been removed.

    7. Clean the Concrete

Always finish this process by cleaning the affected area with water. Paint strippers contain a toxic chemical substance called methylene chloride. Exposure to methylene chloride may result in chemical burns or other health problems.

If the paint you are removing was crafted prior to 1978, it may even generate hazardous fumes containing lead. As such, you should always wear gloves, safety goggles, and a face mask, or respirator, when utilizing paint stripper.

Jenna Sue Design is no stranger to DIY projects and affordable home decor hacks. She loves finding ways to renovate homes without the costly expense of a professional. Her biggest project to date was actually one of her easiest! She had a BIG concrete patio floor that needed some BIG help. Just look at the before… YIKES!

Instead of hiring an expensive contractor, she opted to renovate the patio herself while pregnant! Keep reading to see how she used Floor Stencils&Tile Stencils from Royal Design Studio to add some BIG pattern to a BIG space without needing a BIG wallet

Jenna removed the cracked and flaking layers of old paint with a power washer and putty knife. She then used concrete crack seal on the multiple cracks she found.

To paint the stripped and prepped concrete, she used Behr Concrete & Garage Floor Paint in a gray color and a nap paint roller made for textured surfaces.

After spotting the Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil from Royal Design Studio, she knew she had to have it. Jenna says, How gorgeous is this stencil? It reminded me of tile, which was the look I wanted, and its a large stencil, making it perfect for larger spaces like walls and floors.

After stenciling the first repeat, she removed the floor stencil and repositioned it by aligning the built in registration marks. These registration marks aligns the stencil perfectly every time! This can be done rather quickly as the paint dried since she used minimal paint to begin with.

How To Paint A Porch Floor With Concrete Paint

One project that Ive thought about doing for years is updating my porch floor with concrete paint. This year I moved it up on the priority list and finally got it done. It has made such a tremendous difference that I cant believe I didnt do this sooner!

This is how it looked before. I had removed the furniture and power washed it about a week or two before I took this photo. You can hardly tell it was even power washed because the concrete was badly stained.

What You Will Need to Paint Concrete*:

Olympic Maximum Stain and Sealer in 2 contrasting shades

One reason I waited so long to do this is that I wanted to do a good amount of research before choosing a concrete paint. Using something that would hold up to the elements and daily foot traffic was most important. I had used Behr granite grip on a small patch of concrete in my backyard and that has held up well for over a year. However, that is not the look I wanted for the front so I had to find something else.

My plan was to paint this to look like wood planks, much in the same way I did the painted shiplap wall in my bedroom. One day on Instagram I saw another bloggers video showing how well her painted concrete porch floor;had held up after two years. After contacting her, I was confident with choosing the same paint she used. Its called Olympic Maximum and its actually a stain that comes in colors much like paint.

    Are Concrete Paints Slip

Painted concrete surfaces can become slippery when wet. For areas that receive a lot of foot traffic, such as porches, steps, pool decks, and patios, a good option is to use an anti-slip concrete floor paint that contains fine aggregate, which gives the surface a light sand finish. If your paint is not slip-resistant, you can find anti-skid additives that can be mixed into the final coat of paint to improve traction.

How Do I Remove Paint From Concrete

Removing an existing coat of paint can be difficult but not impossible because paints dont penetrate into the concrete, as do stains. If the paint is peeling or blistering, you can often remove it with a wire brush, paint scraper, or power washer. To remove multiple layers of paint, try a gel-based paint stripper specifically for concrete and allow it to remain on the surface to give it a chance to penetrate and go to work. Once the paint is completely removed, you can repaint the surface or apply another type of decorative finish. Learn more: How to Remove Paint from Concrete

Painting a concrete porch floor will make it and the space around it look so much better. Why not take it one step further and stencil a design over it to make it look like a tiled, stone or brick floor. Stenciling is not hard and is a very budget-friendly way to get the look of costly wallpaper, floor tile or even an area rug.

I have used an allover stencil to hide the imperfections on the walls in my guest bath and even used one on a shower door. I have also used an allover stencil to create the look of wallpaper in the foyer of my previous home.

Last week I had the opportunity to paint a concrete porch using floor paint and a stencil.

I went into mom mode x 2. Ed and I went up to Charlottesville to watch our 2-year old granddaughter for a week while my older daughter and son-in-law went to California to look for a place to live. They are moving there in June. 🙁

My younger daughter also lives in Charlottesville and I got to spend lots of time with her and her boyfriend while also helping her paint and stencil the concrete front porch of their house.

As you can see from the BEFORE photo above, the concrete porch floor had been painted grey at one time, but was worn and ready for a paint makeover.

So we got to work to give this floor a whole new look using paint and an allover stencil to make the floor look like it was tiled in a herringbone design.

It’s easy to paint concrete. Concrete surfaces are common in households, especially on exterior walls and surfaces surrounding the home. Even though its rough texture makes it a piece of cake to get fresh paint to adhere to untouched concrete, every so often your concrete need to be touched up with a fresh coat of new paint, which is a bit more challenging.

Repainting concrete surfaces is a bit more demanding than painting freshly-laid concrete. Aged concrete surfaces are coated with various things, such as staining compounds, sealants, and of course older paint, all of which present difficulties.

Here’s how to update your worn-down concrete the correct way.

Step 1 – Cleaning and Scrape

Prepare a solution of water mixed with any household cleaning chemical. Scrub the surface with a long-handled brush. Allow the concrete surface to dry.

Existing paint needs to be scraped and sanded. Scrape any areas with loose or flaking paint, and lightly sand using fine sandpaper. Lightly sand intact areas of paint as well to give them the grit needed to receive new paint.

Clean the surface with a dry mop.

Step 2 – Buff the Concrete Surface

Step 3 – Removing Curing Compounds

Step 4 – Preparing the Epoxy Paint

What Is The Difference Between Concrete Stain And Concrete Paint

The biggest difference between an acid-based concrete stain and paint is how they react with the concrete. Acid-based stains actually penetrate and react with the salts and minerals in concrete to impart rich, deep, translucent tones. Although the color is long lasting and wont chip or peel away, it can be unpredictable and will vary depending on the makeup of the concrete.

Concrete paint is non-reactive and fills the surface pores of the concrete to achieve opaque, uniform, consistent color. However, paint can chip and peel over time, especially if you dont prepare the surface properly.
