How To Get Patio Chairs Restrapped

Patio Furniture Repair – How to Reinforce Couch Seat to Support Cushions – by DIYNate

Q. Can you recommend a local company to replace the strapping on my Brown Jordan patio chairs? The straps on mine have permanently discolored over 15 years outside. Id like to have them redone before spring.

A. Youre smart to plan ahead.

Urban Country, a Brown Jordan dealer in Bethesda, recommends having the chairs restrapped by Criterion Lawn Furniture Repair . The company is based in Keyser, W.Va., but picks up and delivers throughout the Washington area, including in Bethesda. The transportation fee, which covers both round trips, is $150. Restrapping typically costs $85 to $90 per chair. If you also want the chairs refinished, the total price might be $170 to $185 per chair.

Q. How can I clean the slate tiles in my bathroom? They are sealed with some compound and show many splatters of paint as well as scrapes accumulated over the years.

A. company that specializes in stone care can remove the sealer by applying a floor finish stripper. Potomac Stone Care uses the Hurricane stripper made by Daycon. The stripper will also take off whatever is on top, such as the paint spatters. Stripping may leave the slate slightly chalky, says Steve Kivinski, a stone technician for Potomac Stone Care, but the company then treats the stone to restore the color and bring back the luster. The complete treatment is typically a one-day job. The cost ranges from $450 to $1,500, depending on the size of the room.

Screw The Slats In Place

Having removed the old sling and starting at the bottom, I began screwing the slats in place. I left a gap between each slat equal to a paint stir stick. This allows for expansion of the wood. There is nothing magic about this distance and I later thought I could of used a 1/4″ gap or more.I made an attempt to keep the slats level and learned I needed to try harder, or be content with imperfection–because I didn’t succeed at keeping them level, I guess I chose less than perfection is ok. The screw length is critical to this process. I made sure I had enough length to penetrate into the chair frame. On concave radius bends, a longer screw is needed. After I was done I decided to remove the first slat at the bottom. I remembered how shorter people complained at how the bottom slat pressed against their leg when sitting in an Adirondack chair I made.

Red Cushion On Outdoor Chair

Pergola from DIY Network’s Blog Cabin 2014

How to maintain it: First, only use cushions meant for outdoor use on your patio furniture. Indoor/outdoor pillows are mildew and waterproof, but when dirt, pollen and other foreign objects are exposed to the pillow, mildew can grow on those tiny pieces, explains Mary L. Delpit, VP for Business Development at The Blush Label. Regularly brush dust and debris off your cushioned furniture, and use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice attachment to remove dirt along the seams of the cushions, where it often becomes trapped.;

How to fix it: For basic dirt and stains, Meg Roberts, president of Molly Maid, suggests combining 1/4 cup of mild dishwashing detergent with 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Scrub cushions with a soft nylon brush, then let the soapy solution sit on the cushions for about 15 minutes. Rinse them clean, then allow the material to air-dry in the sun. To treat mold and mildew stains, use the same cleaning process, but try a mixture of 1/2 cup bleach in a gallon of water just remember to check for colorfastness before applying to the whole cushion. For oil-based spills that can leave greasy spots on your decor, wipe off the surface thoroughly, then treat with a generous dose of flour or cornstarch, which should soak up the oily residue. Clean off fully-soaked absorbents and repeat until the grease is gone.

Replacement Webbing For Lawn Chairs: Clips

The cleanest way to secure your webbing ends and prevent them from fraying over time is to use patio furniture webbing replacement clips. Each package includes 12 clips.

For each strip, vertical and horizontal, youll need two clips. Count the number of strands on your chair and multiply by two.

These clips fit all tubular lawn chairs with slots, and are rust and fade resistant.

That said, these are a little bit difficult to use, and many people may prefer to simply skip the clips. The patio furniture webbing may fray more quickly if you dont use clips but the changing process is easier.

Helpful Hints for Replacement Slings

There are no cancellations of orders on custom replacement slings that have already been cut.;Please follow the old adage â¦;âMeasure Twice â Cut Onceâ.

Depending on the original manufacturer of; furniture and the age of the old slings , installing new slings can be a couple hour job or as little as several minutes â to 4 or 5 hour job for 4 chairs.;; Very old slings often are ripped, frayed or mildewed and the old plastic splines can be extremely brittle.;Step 1:; Measure for the new sling.

To measure for new slings â we recommend taking the width measurement while the old slings are still onâ and by measuring from Outside channel to outside channel of the two rails to the nearest 1/4â³.; The length can usually be taken off the old sling.; We rarely use the width measurement by only measuring old slings once they are removed â as we have found that the old slings have typically stretched quite a bit or are torn â and if new slings are this same width as the removed sling â they are;too loose.; When you order your slings from Patio Direct, always provide your width first â then the length

Step 2:; Remove the sling rail end caps .

Step 3:; Remove the old sling and Spreader Bars.

Step 4:; Install the new splines into the sling.

Step 5:; Install the new sling.

How To Repair Mesh Sling Patio Chair

Mesh sling patio chairs come with mesh fabric. It ensures maximum breathability while you sit and lean on the chair. However, the mesh or wicked fabric is prone to weather and external elements. Thus, these chairs will sag more frequently than the other patio chair variants.

The steps of repairing to stop and remove the sagging includes-

  • First off, measure the chair properly. For the width, start measuring from the center of the rail and continue until you reach the opposite end. Measure the curvature of the chair to know its length accurately.
  • Once you know the measurements properly, you are ready to purchase the new sling. You can order it online or from the patio fabric shops.
  • Now, you will have to use a utility knife to cut the new sling according to the required measurements. For this, move the knife in downward motion right through the middle of the sling. Next, move it from one side of the rail to the other side and reach the cap. Remove the cap from the sling.
  • Now, its time to remove the old sling from the patio chair. You can simply slide half of the chairs sling from the rail. However, the rails are connected with bolts. You need to remove the bolts to free the rail.
  • Look at the spreader bar and remove it too. If it needs repairing or repainting, do it now.
  • Now, remove one rail from the patio chair. Now, find the nylon rod of the sling and insert it in the other rail. Also, make sure the hem side of the sling faces the backside of the chair.

Other than that, though, the selection of leather as a reupholstering material doesnât materially change the process. Youâll want to refer to the specific type of furniture youâre working with for tutorials on how to best approach the project.
