New Addition: A Patio Pond For The Screened Porch

How to install a patio screen

August 4, 2016 by Patti Estep

A patio pond can be the perfect solution for those who love the sound and beauty of a water feature but are limited on space.

This post is sponsored by Aquascape who also provided me with this wonderful patio pond and bamboo fountain, but the content and opinions are all mine.

What could be more relaxing than the sound of a water fountain on your patio or porch? I’ve always wanted a pond with water lilies, but never had the space, or energy to build one in the garden. Luckily I found out that there are patio ponds on the market that are perfect for a small space. In fact, I thought this would be the perfect element to complete our screened porch makeover.

Small Paver Patio Ideas

There are reasons why so many people create their small patios with poured concrete. Once you pour the patio, its durable and a safe non-slip surface. If you find the look of concrete unpleasant, you can apply several finishing treatments. You could etch into it, stamp it, or apply a faux finish. You could even tile your small patio with a natural stone tile to improve the look and maintain a non-slip walking surface.

If you want something else, you can lay stone pavers to build your patio area. You can choose from flagstone, cobblestone, cut stone, or veneer stone. The one you choose will depend on your budget, your small patios size, and the look youre going for.

Stone and concrete pavers typically have space between them thats filled with Irish moss or pea gravel. Flagstone will create a continuous and almost smooth surface for your patio. Traditional pavers are the most versatile when it comes to laying them in unique patterns and designs. However, they also create the most varied surface. This is something to think about if you have guests with mobility issues.

Use Some Gorgeous Hanging Vines

This vine display is amazing for creating a natural green privacy wall at the end of a patio. Although it can take a bit longer to achieve, its well worth the wait as it provides privacy while still letting light come through.

To do this, youll need to put up railings or wire, like in this example so the climbing vines have somewhere to keep growing upwards and create the wall effect.

Style Options For Patio Designs

The design and shape of your desired patio can guide you to the ideal size. If you want your patio to feature curves or decorative borders, youll need to take that into account when drawing up the size of the design. Unusual shapes can take advantage of unique patio paver ideas, and you can set up multiple seating areas according to your taste. Opting for an enclosed or screened in patio requires some consideration as well youll need to ensure that the exit points from the enclosure have enough space for accessibility.

The Similarities Between A Deck And A Patio

Both decks and patios offer a flat, stable surface and provide a pleasant place to enjoy the outdoors. Either structure can be topped by a pergola, roof or cover to shield it from the Florida sun and provide shade. Are you interested in an outdoor kitchen, craving a fire pit, intrigued by the notion of creating an outdoor room or intent on surrounding your pool with usable space? Both decks and patios can be used for these purposes.

Be Unique With A Tin Privacy Wall

If you want a full wall with no gaps, a tin wall like this one can be the way to go for you. Its a great reusable material and its quite unique compared to the wooden look most backyards go for.

I like the mixed material and rustic appearance of the tin wall paired with the Adirondack chairs and terracotta planters.

Key Questions To Ask When Deciding Between A Deck Or Patio

How to replace patio screen

Would a deck be a delightful option for your backyard or would you be better off planning the perfect patio?

  • Is budget is a concern? Then installing a patio is generally more affordable.
  • What if your backyard is uneven or sloping? A deck is built above the ground, and its legs can easily be adjusted to accommodate changes in the terrain beneath it.
  • Do you want the space to feel like part of the surrounding yard? Since it sits directly on the ground, a patio can be nestled in your landscaping.
  • Do you want to discourage guests from wandering over your grass? Thanks to its height, a deck creates more separation between the yard and the structure.
  • Would you rather minimize your maintenance chores? Keeping a patio looking fabulous generally requires much less in the way of routine maintenance than a deck.

If youd prefer a privacy screen with a bit of character thats a bit different than wood and lattice, check out this amazing privacy screen with a circular pattern. It looks really unique and delicate with the dotted holes across it.

The material is pale so it doesnt stand out too much in the garden but it still provides a lot of privacy to the backyard.

Make A Moveable Wattle Privacy Screen

This wattle screen is quite effective and very functional, as it can be moved around the yard as desired and its entirely standalone. Its been created with a lot of long, thin branches all affixed to the frame and crossbeams.

The frame itself sits on a wide base for better support and means it wont just blow away in the smallest wind.

Install A Nailing Board On The Floor

Use the cordless drill to drill four pilot holes through one of the 4-foot two-by-twos. Switch to a driver bit and drive the 2 1/2-inch screws through the two-by-two and into the face of the floor.

For a finished look, step back the board 1 1/2 inches from the leading edge of the flooring. This will allow the bottom edge of the screen panel to be flush with the outer edge of the flooring.

This true living wall is gorgeous and creates a thick privacy screen between this homeowners open air seating area and the neighbors. It includes flowers of every color and is a thick and eye-catching display.

When youre designing your backyard privacy solutions, consider ways that you can use your privacy screen to enhance or add to your garden instead of having something that minimizes your space.

How Many Feet Of String Lights Do I Need For Patio

Keeping that in mind, shorter strands are usually easier to set up than longer strands. You will need a support every 40-50 feet of lighting. If youre using your own string lighting, consider spending the extra money for LED bulbs. Incandescent bulbs require that same watts of power as their light output.

Install Thick Mesh Fabric On A Wooden Frame

This foldable privacy wall is a good idea, and it can also be moved around your backyard. Its been made with four large wooden frames attached to each other with hinges. In each frame, a thick mesh fabric has been attached for privacy.

Its a great option if you want to let some light in but also protect your yard from prying eyes. Its also a good way to add some shade to your backyard.

Choosing The Best Screen Mesh

To get the most from your new enclosure, youll need the right screening material. Fiberglass and aluminum are the most common types of screening. Both are available in a variety of mesh sizes the larger the number, the smaller the weave and in various colors . Fiberglass is the most worry-free of all screening material, as it will not rust, rot, or stain.

In some cases, additional considerations apply. For example, if youll share your enclosure with pets or young children, you may need a more durable screening. If you live near the ocean, fiberglass screening will resist the corrosive properties of salt air. And if your enclosure will be exposed to direct sunlight, you can reduce heat and glare by installing a shading fabric which may block eighty to ninety percent of the suns rays, yet still allow soft light to filter in.

Contemporary Small Patio Ideas

Screen Repair – Rescreening Patio Door

Whats nice about a contemporary design approach is that it works well with a small patio space. To create a modern design, youll want to use simplistic furniture with minimal details and ornamentation. This furniture can also be small in size so that it fits better in your small space. Look for clean, bright white cushions on sleek wood or metal frames.

Then decorate the space with potted plants that you can prune into neat shapes. This will keep the greenery looking clean. You could hang a shipping pallet or other large rack on your wall or fence. Then hang small pots from it with different herbs. Now you have a useful herb garden and decorative greenery.

If you have a concrete patio, place a geometric patterned outdoor rug. Use exotic wood or bamboo to build a privacy wall on one or two sides of your small patio to create a more intimate space. Then consider hanging a sleek outdoor chandelier or pendant light above the seating area.

Install Smaller Lattice Screens For Patios

If you want to add privacy just to your patio and not your whole yard, consider installing some simple lattice screens for partial shade and privacy. I like the contrasting colors of these three lattice panels, with the frame painted white and the rest in natural wood.

These screens are hanging from the patio roof but the thin cables holding them up create the illusion of floating screens, which is a simple yet excellent idea.

Create A Charming Rustic Garden Wall

One clever way to add a privacy wall is to incorporate it into your garden, like this cute weathered white garden screen. Its been created from a few old doors and painted white. A few plant displays have been added around it so its better integrated with the whole yard.

I also love the small and simple wreath thats been added to the center of the garden wall, to make the whole thing appear more charming.

Combine Lattice And Planks For A Unique Wall

I love this privacy screen because its adaptable to the slope of the yard. Its created through a series of different wooden panels, with a mix of planks and lattice work. The individual sections add a measure of privacy while still having a lot of space.

To fill in some of the gaps, some tall grasses and plants have been added and the result is a beautiful garden and a bit of the view of the road blocked.

Grab a cold glass of lemonade, an Adirondack chair, and a bistro table: Youre ready to add a screened-in porch to your home. Different from a sunroom which includes paned windows, window treatments, and utilities such as air conditioning a screened porch is a permanently airy space.

Its 300 square feet without bugs, says James Moylan of Design Builders, Inc., a licensed, bonded and insured contractor in Bethesda, Maryland, since 2006. As if that werent glorious enough, these spaces are ideal for relaxing, dining al fresco, or taking the home office someplace new when youre tired of your current view. According to a recent HomeLight survey, 30% of top agents nationwide say buyers consider this feature to be a desirable outdoor feature. Screened In Patio Overview

However much you love your patio, there may be just too many days when its not fit to live on. Our enclosure turns a patioor a deckinto a space as comfortable as another room of your house.

Of course, a closed in porch wont keep out the cold, but the roll-down shades will block out most of the rain. And, thanks to the screens and the awning soffit , you can forget about mosquito attacks.

Our 14 x 16-ft. enclosure is a big project, but its the best of any do it yourself screen porch kits around! Although its fairly simple structurally, it requires careful work with a lot of large-dimension lumber. The trickiest part is getting all these components square and plumb, which probably calls for more than a beginners skills. And youll spend a lot of time buildingtwo or three weeks going at it full time, or much of a summer in your spare time.

We built our screen room roof high enough to preserve a pleasant view through the sliding doors. In summer, the awning top shades the bright sun, yet allows plenty of light to pass into the house. And heres the biggest selling point for this project: You can easily remove the awning in winter and let the sunshine in. The structure is designed to look good even without the awning top. Of course, you could leave the awning on all year in many parts of the country, but it wont support a heavy snow load.
