How To Clean Patio Cushions With Bleach

How to Resurface a Concrete Patio with a Decorative Concrete Overlay

Bleach is one of the most effective ways to remove mildew from your patio cushion because it also kills germs, bacteria, and fungi. But before you pour bleach on your cushion, remember that chlorine bleach is a strong agent. It can remove pigments from colored cushion fabric if its not bleachable.

Bleach can also irritate your eyes and skin if not used properly. But if you have white cushions with stubborn stains, mold and mildew, this is your best option.

Using gloves and an apron, mix þ cups of bleach to one gallon of water in a bucket. Dont clean your cushions on your patio as the bleach could cause staining on your floor.

Set up a workstation in your garage or sidewalk and lay down a tarp to avoid staining.

Dip a cloth into the bleach solution and test it on a hidden part of the cushion first to see if it changes the fabrics color. If its okay to use, you can wipe down the cushions using cloth or a brush and keep reapplying until they are fully saturated.

Let the solution sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing the cushions with water. Let them dry completely outdoors.

What Temperature Should You Pour Concrete

Before resurfacing, strip off any paint or sealers from your concrete surface and watch the weather. Temperatures should remain above 50 degrees F for 8 hours after the pour and above freezing for 24 hours after that. For optimum results, work on a day with low humidity, no rain and an air temperature ranging between 70° and 75°F. The surface temperature of the existing concrete must be at least 50°F.

Concrete Patio Resurfacing Ideas For Your Backyard

The patio is a paved part of your yard, usually stick to the house. It shouldnt be mixed with a terrace or balcony, because its installed on a ground level, and its usually made of concrete, woods, tiles, plastic panels and so on. People often use it as a separate part of the whole garden, for dining, outdoor lunch, or just drinking coffee in a calm environment. Very often the patio is located in the backyard, so its not visible from the front doorway. But, that doesnt mean you shouldnt take care of it and make it your safe and comfortable spot.

Preventing Peeling Paint On A Concrete Porch

Question: I have a concrete porch thats been painted several times. But the paint bubbles and peels off, leaving a mess. Each of the painters has said that this happens to concrete when you paint it over the winter. Im not sure that they are telling me the truth. How do I get the porch painted in the correct manner?

Silver Spring

Answer: A variety of issues could be at play here. First, you should determine whether moisture is coming up through the concrete from below. Tape a piece of relatively thick, clear plastic, such as a three-inch square cut from a reclosable plastic bag, to an area with no paint. If moisture droplets appear over the next day, youll need to strip off all the paint and switch to a coating that resists hydrostatic pressure. Rust-Oleums WaterTite-LV Waterproofing Concrete Masonry Paint is one example. Or you can coat the stripped surface with a concrete-resurfacing material, such as Quikretes Concrete Resurfacer, which can be tinted.

All of the above is fairly standard advice, so your painters may have done that. But they might not have realized some of the details that Mariah Sanchez, senior technical services representative for Behr, says are also important. First, when the paint label tells you what the temperature must be , its referring to the surface temperature of the concrete. That is typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the air temperature. So for most water-based paints, the air temperature needs to be at least 60 degrees.

Is It Better To Paint Or Stain Concrete Patio

Concrete Patio Resurfacing & Epoxy Coating in Omaha NE ...

Concrete stain embeds the surface to color it translucently, while opaque concrete paint covers the top of the concrete but is subject to chipping and peeling when improperly applied. Concrete stains go on quicker, dry faster and take less work than concrete paint, but they offer no significant protection.

How To Repair A Cracked And Old Cement Patio

Resurfacing a Sidewalk is Easy to DIY
    • Pin

    Today we are sharing how to repair a cracked and old cement patio that we completed at our old house.;;

This post was updated April 2020 to reflect an updated version of this product. The product link is towards the bottom of this post. This post was not sponsored, we just really liked the outcome of the space so we shared with you!

The patio had been neglected and seriously damaged through the winter storms. My dad completely ruined it when he put down some kind of a rock salt during the winter that ate through the cement like it was a little scooby snack.

TIP: If you have deep cracks or large concrete pieces missing, you will need to use a filler product prior to fix them. Read the directions on the back of the product to ensure you are applying properly.

And even remove stubborn mildew stains.

The weather was finally nice enough to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the patio, but then I took a look at the fabric cushions on my furniture. They were dusty, dingy, and had some muddy paw prints and the droppings of errant birds. Luckily for me, cleanup required just a few supplies, a bit of elbow grease, and a breeze to dry the fabric before I could settle down for a glass of iced tea and a good book. Follow these steps to clean your canvas patio furniture and pillows so theyre ready for the relaxing warm-weather evenings ahead.

Note: If the covers on your pillows and cushions are removable, cleaning is even easier. Pretreat any stains with a dab of heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent, work it in with a soft-bristled brush, let it sit for 15 minutes, and toss the covers in the washing machine. Wash in cold or warm water and hang the covers to air-dry before you put them back on the cushions. Most small canvas throw pillows can also be machine-washed and air-dried.

    Prepare The Concrete Surface

Start by tidying your outdoor space area, clear it of furniture, flowerpots, and toys then sweep and clean thoroughly to remove any dirt and dust. Cover any plants or landscaping that cant be removed with tarps or cloth to protect them from chemicals and water run-off. Next, scrub the patio surface to remove grease or any type of grime from the concrete. Grease or oil on the surface will bleed through the new paint, interfering with the longevity of the paint and cause it to discolour.

    Remove moss, roots, vines and anything else that has grown on the surface of the concrete before cleaning. Its probably worthwhile to rent a pressure-washer to remove the stubborn grime and stains. Alternatively you can mix water and some mild detergent and scrub over the concrete using a broom or scrub brush.;

If you have previously painted your patio any old paint can be removed with paint-removing solvent and scrapers. This may take you a while, but it is essential for a beautiful painted finish. If you dont do this, you can end up with bumps and an uneven texture on the surface. Allow for the patio to fully dry before proceeding to the next step.

Even if the patio doesn’t appear to be dirty, clean it anyway. Specs of dirt may not be visible but they can ruin the finish of a new paint job. So basically, the better the patio surface, the better quality of your paintwork.

    Concrete Resurfacing Costs And Options

The most common options for driveway resurfacing are:

    • Coloured concrete
    • Stencilled concrete
    • Stamped concrete

The simplest way to resurface concrete is with a thin spray coat. This can be plain, coloured or multicoloured as preferred. Stencilled concrete uses stencils to create patterns and stamped concrete creates texture. Pebbled concrete is a different process and has been popular for decades.

Concrete resurfacing cost varies for the different processes, with coloured concrete being the least expensive and pebblecrete and stamped concrete the most expensive. However, a stencilled or stamped driveway that resembles bricks, natural stone, cobblestone or bush rock will still be cheaper than installing real brick or stone.

What Conditions Will The Overlay Be Exposed To

Be sure the overlay system is tough enough to withstand all the conditions it will confront. Is the slab outdoors and subject to weather extremes and freezing and thawing? Is it a floor surface in a high-traffic area or subject to chemical, grease and oil spills? Not all overlays are designed for exterior use, and some systems are better suited than others for harsher exposure conditions. Ask the overlay manufacturer or installer to confirm that the material you plan to use will work for your purposes.

    Scrub With Mild Bleach

Bleach always seems to do the trick. Be careful to water down the solution so that you dont create spots of discoloration on your cushions. I recommend pouring 1/2 cup of bleach into a gallon of water. As always, never use bleach cleaning products if you are pregnant.

Important: Never use bleach and ammonia together. This is very dangerous and can produce toxic chemicals. Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D. does a good job of explaining why here.

Clean The Surface Of Concrete Before Painting

The first step in any concrete painting or staining project is to clean the surface. Paint wont bond well to dirty, rusty or oily spots, and untreated stains can seep through the finish. Give the concrete a good scrub using a stiff brush and a trisodium phosphate solution or other degreaser and strip old, flaking paint with a wire brush. Once the concrete dries, repair any holes and cracks you find with a concrete patch kit, letting the material fully cure before continuing.

    Just Like New: Concrete Resurfacing

Painted concrete certainly has its advantages. A fresh coat of paint or stain can really spruce up concrete basement or garage walls and floors, bringing new life to a worn concrete patio. Concrete paints and stains help to mask surface discoloration and signs of wear and tear and they extend the life of concrete by preventing further damage. Coating a concrete surface with paint can also make for easier cleaning and maintenance.
