The 7 Best Patio Heater Covers Reviews And Buying Guide

  • May 5, 2021

Patio heaters can be quite handy to use during winters as they can easily warm up open areas in your backyard or any other open place. But since these get used only during winters, storing them safely during summers is highly important. This can be done using patio heater cover because of the following characteristics of such a cover:

  • Dimensions: Since a heater cover is supposed to completely cover your patio heater, it needs to have the right dimensions that can support your heater. Thus, most of the options out there offer a diameter of 34 inches and a height of 95 inches to easily work with most patio heaters out there.
  • Fabric: Other than properly covering your heater, the fabric of the heater that you are using also needs to be strong and durable. This strength of the cover fabric is given as 200D or 600D fabric, where a higher rating is better in terms of the strength.
  • Warranty: You can also check the warranty offered by a given patio heater cover to get an idea of its durability and warranty. While most options out there come with a 1-year long warranty, other better options might even offer a longer warranty period.

Sandwich Framing And 26 Tongue

How to build a patio cover out of wood

The design of this roof resembles traditional post-and-beam construction, but without the headaches of working with heavy, expensive timber and the tricky joinery that goes with it. The posts, beams, rafters and ceiling ties are built-in-place sandwiches of common 2×4, 2×6, 2×8 and 2×10 smooth cedar lumber. The center board of each sandwich is 2 in. narrower than the outer ones, which lends attractive shadow lines and architectural heft to the building.

This triple-thick assembly method makes the framing members very strong, which allows for longer spans and wider spacing between members. This technique allows you to overlap and lock all the pieces together for a very strong framework, easier nailing and tighter joints. And, by assembling beams in layers, theyre lighter to lift. Since the rafters are so beefy, you can space them 32 in. apart. But those wide spans call for a roof decking that can handle those spans. Tongue-and-groove 2×6 decking fills the bill nicely because its very strong, reasonably priced and easy to install. It also looks great on the inside. You can let butt ends of the roof decking fall randomly throughout the roof; its not important that they splice over framing members. But the seams will look more polished if you use a block plane to carve a little chamfer on decking ends where two boards meet.

Louvered Patio Cover Cost

The cost of a louvered patio cover is between $4,320 and $20,700. This makes the total cost of a patio with a louvered roof between $6,048 and $26,100. Louvered roofs come in many configurations and materials. A roll-formed roof is the least expensive. This is a thinner type of slat material. An extruded roof is the most expensive. This is a more durable and longer-lasting roof option, but costs can approach $100 a square foot if you choose to include all the options.

Selecting Materials To Build A Patio Cover

While looks are important, you want to make sure that the materials fit the structure. Since my patio cover was going to have a slight slope, shingles were out. A tar roof would work, but it would be a heavy smell like a BP oil spill. I decided on corrugated metal roofing because its resistant to high winds, is lightweight, and is structurally sound.

Using corrugated metal also allows me to reduce the degree of slope, or roof pitch needed to a mere 10 percent, or a 1-to-10 pitch. This meant the patio cover could start at the edge of the houses roof at a height of eight feet and slope down to seven feet, leaving a clearance of more than six and a half feet between the lowest part of the frame’s headers and the ground at its outer edge.

Rather Watch Us Build Our New Patio Check It Out On Youtube

So lets start from the beginning with the design. My husband wanted the biggest deepest patio we could get with unobstructed views. Our current patio was 30 long and that length was good so that we didnt cover the windows to two of our bedrooms. Our house is already on the darker side and we wanted to keep as much natural light inside as possible. So we knew 30 long, but how were we going to that big of a span without posts in the middle? I didnt think it was possible, but my husband wouldnt give up on it. So I went and talked to an architect friend and he said it would be possible with an 18 glulam. He also suggested adding another set of posts close to the outside that wouldnt block any views but would help balance the look. I totally agreed and is one of our favorite features. He also said we could get away with smaller joists, but because we were leaving them exposed, I went with 3x8s to again balance the look. As far as the depth, we settled on 14 so that we could use standard 16 joists rather than having to up the joist size to 20 and then cut them down to size.

Next up was #DemoDay! It was sure nice to see the old patio go down and that meant things were getting real! I did salvage the wood and made a dining table for the new patio. If you havent seen that build, you can check it out here. It is a real conversation piece when I tell people what I made it from.

Then lastly some paint, lighting fixtures and the patio was ready to be enjoyed.

Installing The Ledger Board

First I removed the 1/4 plywood dressing right below the drip edge and saw a very solid framing 2×4 underneath, perfect for attaching the ledger board, which attaches the cover to the roof frame. The local building code required a 2×6 ledger board, which meant I had to saw off two inches of wood from the top of the bay windows box. Next, I pre-drilled 1/8 holes, 6 inches apart, in the ledger board, because it was treated lumber and the deck screws would need a little help getting started. After attaching the ledger board with 4 decking screws, I used a large staple gun to staple the phone, internet, and cable lines to it, on the inside toward the house, to better protect them from the weather.

Mounting The Patio Roof Ledger

Procedures for mounting a ledger depend on the type of siding on the house. Relatively flat siding can remain intact, but clapboard, beveled wood, metal, or vinyl siding should always be cut away.

If you have beveled horizontal siding, then use an inverted piece of siding, as shown in the illustration here, to create a plumb, flat surface for attaching the ledger.

If your siding is not beveled, you can simply screw the ledger tightly to it.

Remove enough of the siding so you can tuck flashing behind the siding above the ledger and allow it to overhang the siding below the ledger.

When cutting wood siding, adjust the blade of the circular saw so it cuts just the siding and not the sheathing underneath. Also, do not let the blade cut beyond the layout lines. If you are cutting vinyl siding, you can use a sharp utility knife instead.

A ledger should be affixed to strong parts of the houses framing, such as second-floor joists or wall studs. The strongest ledger connection relies on bolts that run through the ledger and the house sheathing and rim or band joist and then are fastened with nuts and washers affixed from the other side. When access to the other side is unfeasible, use lag screws with washers instead of bolts, as shown in the illustration.

If it is impossible to attach the ledger to a floor joist, then fasten the ledger to wall studs, which are generally located on 16-inch centers and doubled up around doors, windows, and other openings.
