Two Videos Cover The Design Questions And Construction Process Of A Post And Beam Patio Roof Structure
Video 1: Design a Roof extension over an existing patio
Existing patio is outside the dining room on the west side of the house. the patio is essentially unusable on a sunny afternoon in the summer.
This video looks at a couple of design options, including attaching the roof ledger below that of the existing eaves and setting the patio roof atop the existing roof.
The latter option was chosen because the low roof and roof beam would have blocked the view from the dining area. Did we say that the house is in Bozeman, MT, where the view is worth viewing?
Work from the view back, not from the house, out.
- Calculate the sightline clearance height, about 6 feet, 2 inches, in this case.
- Determine the beam size: 8 inches in this case.
- Choose a roof pitch and roof structure
This places the new roof on top of the existing roof. The next question is what to do with the existing eave under the new roof: kick it or keep it?
To tie the design together, Peter chose to cut the rafter tails off the extend the exterior wall up to the underside of the new roof. As it turned out, the existing roof structure is a truss system, but they were able to contact the original truss manufacturer to verify that cutting the tails off would not jeopardize the structural integrity of the trusses.
From the we-hope-this-is-obvious desk: Never alter engineered trusses without the approval of a licensed professional engineer. Ever.
The next design decision: material selection

Eht Explores Some Basic Roof Framing Techniques From Layout To Installation
Roof framing is one of those carpenter skills that appears quite complicated, and indeed, some roof designs are difficult. Roofs are basically five types: shed, gable, hip, gambrel and mansard. Another common design in the Northeast is the “saltbox,” which is a gable roof with one longer side. These days “cut-ups,” or roofs with a lot of valleys, dormers and other features, are increasingly popular. In many cases with purchased house plans, the details of the roof construction, including rafter design, are included. Pre-constructed trusses have also become increasingly popular. They are constructed at a factory to match your building and delivered on site. They do, however, require extra manpower and lifting equipment to install in place. You can also build your own trusses if you have the equipment, or can rent the equipment to install them. Piece-by-piece rafter/roof construction, however, is still the more common construction method for many buildings. Simple roofs, such as a shed or the common gable, are fairly easy to construct, even without plans, if you understand the basics and a little geometry.
Roofs are framed in five basic designs: shed, gable, hip, gambrel and mansard. The gable is the most common, and it can be complicated with multiple roof lines, including valleys and dormers.
How To Measure Set Out And Build Hip Rafter Lengths And Roofs
Hipped roof construction can seem quite complicated to grasp at first but i’m going to break it down and explain each area in detail.
I’ll start at the beginning with the easy bits before tackling the more complicated stuff and that way hopefully I’ll make it really clear and easy to understand exactly how to set out, measure, cut and install hip and valley roof rafters. If you know how, it’s possible to cut all or most of the roof members safely on the deck before taking them up and installing them all together.
Some Steps On How To Attach A Patio Roof To An Existing House
Attaching a patio roof to an existing house is not a doddle, but it does not mean that you cannot do it. You just need some assistances of experts if you are not really good at carpentry.
Before attaching a patio roof to your home, you need to prepare some materials such as:
- Nail gun
- Ledger
Steps:
- Measure the sightline clearance height from the roof to the house, not the other way around.
- Measure the size of the beam that you are going to use.
- You can either remove the eave or just keep it.
- Using lag bolts and a screwdriver, fasten the base of the posts to the ground. You have to make sure that they sit plumb.
- Make a cutting on one of the sides of the horizontal roof beam on an angle. You have to do it thoroughly so that the rafters sit flush on it.
- Attach the horizontal beam by using a nail gun. After that, to make it flush with the roof of the existing house, cut the two outer rafters.
- Now you can begin assembling the outer rafters and attaching the rafter beam to the edge of the roof of the house.
- Cut each of the house ends while continuing installing the rafters so that they fit the top of the rafter beam perfectly.
- When all the rafters are installed correctly, form your patio roof by attaching the planks horizontally across the rafters.
- If you are going to use shingles to cover the patio roof, do not forget to install black roofing felt along with a single layer of oriented strand board. When they are installed, you can begin attaching roofing shingles.
Step 1: Do You Know Your Local Codes And Permit Requirements
Know and comply with your local building codes regarding roof construction in your area. In addition, pull the proper permits as required. Many people, especially DIYers, do not like to get permits due to time and costs. However, doing so ensures that your work is to code in order to protect you, your family, and your property. In addition, many insurance companies may not pay claims in situations where work was not to code. Words to the wise.

Measure half the width of the shed back from the end of the shed and mark the top plate. This is the center line of the Terminal Rafter. Set the Terminal rafter on the top plates and attach it to the plates.
Measure from this point 24″ on center along the wall top plates and mark the center lines of the rest of the rafters. You can move the marks over 3/4″ to make them easier to see once you set the rafters on.
Step 9: Double Check For A Better Freestanding Patio Cover
Now you have the structure of a freestanding patio cover. You can begin to cover the patio with the materials of your choice such as lattice wood, translucent fiberglass, wood and shingles, metal panels , boards and netting, or canvas shade sails.

Solid Patio Covers And Residential Roof Modifications
Solid patio covers are considered an addition or extension to the existing roofing of the house. As such, they must conform in style, appearance, color, and materials to that of the main residence such that they appear to be a part of the original construction . The standard patio size for the neighborhood is 120 square feet and patio covers exceeding this dimension require special consideration .
Modifications conforming to the preferred styles described here and meeting the requirements of matching appearance and roof pitch of original construction may, on a case-by-case basis, be allowed to exceed the height and/or square footage requirements described above, but must conform to the restrictions placed on the residence as a whole, as well as any City requirements. Under no circumstances should a roof pitch be allowed of less than 3″/12″.
The preferred roofing style is a hip roof with roof pitches similar to that of the existing residence . Figures 1 and 2 illustrate typical hip roof installations on single and two-story homes.

Step 3: Mark Rafter Plate Location And Remove Siding
Now that you know the rise and run, you know where to place the rafter plate on your wall. Make sure it is at least 3 inches below any windows allowing for the thickness of your roofing materials .Snap a horizontal chalk line at this point a minimum of the length of the flooring below. This will be your “upper” line measurement for the rafter plate.
Measure down from this line the width of your rafter plate. Usually, it is a 2×6 board, so in this case, measure down approximately 6 inches.Snap a horizontal line at the mark – it is your “lower” rafter plate line. These two lines represent the location of your rafter plate.Carefully remove the siding contained within those lines to expose the wall studs or other supporting material. Disregard if placing rafter plate on brick, etc.
Note: In our building project depicted by the photos on this page, the rafter plate and ledger board were already exposed after we removed the old porch.
A Freestanding Patio Tends To Be Easier To Install
Attaching the cover of your patio on the roof of your house can be arduous and harmful. If the structure of the roof is not strong enough, it cannot support the cover.
Unlike the ones that rely on the roof of a house, a freestanding patio is stronger and safer because it is supported by four posts that do not rely on any other buildings.
Step 4: Attach The Jack Rafters To The Hip Rafters
Now cut out the Jack Rafters and install them between the hip rafters and the top plate. You will need to measure perpendicular to the Center Common Rafter over 24″ and put a mark on the hip rafter to know where the center line of the top of the jack rafter will sit on the Hip rafter.
Use straight board laid perpendicular to rafters to check that top edge of rafters are flush with each other when installing each rafter to ensure that roof is flat.
How Much Does It Cost To Build A Roof Over A Deck
The cost to cover a deck will depend on a number of factors. These factors include the type of material, the size of the roof, and how complicated it will be to build. Currently, the cost to add a roof over your patio will start at $2,000 and increase from there. Contact a local roofing company to get started and schedule an estimate for your project.
Freestanding Patio Cover With Traditional Accent
This patio provides a bit traditional accent to your backyard. It is like the ones that you can encounter in Bali.
The stained wooden posts give a more natural and impressive look to the patio. The exposed beam ceiling makes the patio look more attractive although it does not feature sophisticated patterns.
The black roof shingle plays an important role in creating the traditional ambiance. It suits the chairs perfectly.
Since the roof slopes down from the center, it does not accumulate water, snow, and leaves which makes it easier to clean.

Prevent The Splash Of The Rain Let The Air Flow
The ultimate goal of installing a patio roof is to protect you from the rain and the glare of the sunlight. Unfortunately, it requires you to block the air flow sometimes.
To prevent the splash of the rain, but let the air flow, you need to place the patio sheeting over the top of the roof about 300 millimeters so that it can perform shield from the rain without blocking the airflow.
It is your best bet especially if you have a fully-covered patio which do not have much airflow.
Step 11: Apply Sheathing And Roofing Materials
Sheathing is nailed to the rafters. Once completed, roofing paper will be installed. Then attach drip edge over the roofing paper. When building a porch roof, asphalt shingles are then attached over the roofing paper and drip edge.An Often Asked QuestionWe are often asked how to integrate a new porch roof’s shingles with those on an existing home if the roof line is extended over the porch.
As you can see in the picture above, now is the time to install your electrical wiring for lights, fans, and receptacles according to your plan.Planning to install outdoor ceiling fans now or in the future. Now’s the time to add additional blocking to support the fans!TIP: If building a porch roof in snow country you should consider using an ice and water barrier along the edge of the roof line. It usually comes in three-foot rolls and prevents damage from ice dams that may form on your roof.

How To Build A Shed Roof Over My Existing Deck
Unless you’re experienced in residential roofing construction, you probably don’t want to build the roof yourself. However, you might want to know the process of how it’s done. Take a look at our step-by-step guide for building a shed roof over your existing deck:
Moisturize: Morning And Evening Moisturizers
A moisturizer is sure to help things along in the skin health and appearances department. The right moisturizers help to soften skin, reduce wrinkles and crow’s feet, reduce inflammation and redness, and firm up your skin.
A solid skin care routine will have daily AM and PM moisturizers. Morning ones, like the one Tiege Hanley offers, contain sunblock to protect against the damage the sun causes to skin. If your morning moisturizer doesn’t contain SPF, it might be time for a switch.
Protecting your skin against sun damage is another men’s skin care basic step that you need to be aware of! This will help your skin stay younger-looking for much longer.
The general rule of thumb on wearing a morning moisturizer with SPF is that you should wear it every day no matter what. Apply it when it’s cold or cloudy. Just use it!
Evening creams, also known as PM creams and night creams, are designed to sooth, comfort and hydrate all night long. They keep your skin from drying out overnight and fresher in the morning.
Try not to make it a one or the other situation. Find time for both creams to appreciate the full benefits that come with a well-established men’s skin care routine.
