Wood Patio Covers Cost
Wooden lattice patio covers
- Requires regular paint or staining
Wood patio covers are the priciest of all patio cover options. We could write an entire article just on all of the different woods you can use to build your cover and how much of your retirement fund youd spend on it. In the spirit of keeping things simple, well only focus on the species of wood you see used most often in Southern California which is Douglas Fir. In fact, its the industry standard.
Why? When compared with other North American softwoods, Douglas fir has superior strength and durability. That means it does well against the high winds, earthquakes, and storms we see in California. Furthermore, it possesses a gold-orange color that many people find appealing. At the same time, Douglas Fir shows decent resistance to fungus and insects. Basically, its the wood that other woods get compared to when you make a material choice for exterior applications.
With building a wooden patio cover, we have the introduction of special drawings and all covers are subject to concrete footings. Unlike the aluminum and vinyl which get installed directly onto a concrete slab. The wood patio covers must have a hole dug and then filled with concrete, after an inspection of course.
A Freestanding Patio Tends To Be Easier To Install
Attaching the cover of your patio on the roof of your house can be arduous and harmful. If the structure of the roof is not strong enough, it cannot support the cover.
Unlike the ones that rely on the roof of a house, a freestanding patio is stronger and safer because it is supported by four posts that do not rely on any other buildings.
The Cost Of A Patio Cover
Introducing the patio cover. I for one love sitting under a patio cover. Whether its the Blazing sun, on a cool summer night or while entertaining guests, patio covers make a wonderful addition to any back or even a front yard. Its the Patio covers cost, however, which can make buying a patio cover a reality or remain on the wish list for most of us. Yet, there are many other reasons for constructing a patio cover.
- A need for shade
Cut Posts With A Jigsaw
Transfer your mark completely around the post using a combination square thats set from the bottom of the post. Cut the post with a 10-teeth-per-inch wood blade in your jigsaw. Youll need a fresh blade for every post you cut. We found the jigsaw a lot safer, quieter and less dusty than a circular saw. This composite polymer is only about 1/2 in. thick but pretty hard, so expect to eat up a new blade on each column.
Note: To make cutting the columns easier, lay them on sandbags or mulch bags to keep them from rolling or vibrating as you cut.
Choosing The Best Patio Cover For Your Home
Keep in mind that the more difficult the installation is, the more costly your cover will end up being. A rectangle is easier to install than is an L shaped patio cover. Likewise, the more add-ons you choose such as lighting, footings or custom paint will again directly affect the finished cost of a patio cover.
Hot Tub Inside A Covered Patio
The cost of a hot tub is between $4,000 and $8,500 on average. Hot tubs come in many sizes, styles, and configurations. Any of them can make an excellent addition to your covered patio. The key is to make sure that you have enough room to comfortably fit the tub inside the covered area, while leaving enough room for other patio activities. Hot tubs need to be wired to your homes electrical panel, so place them fairly close to the home for the best results.

It is that time of the year when I start planning my summer projects. Most of the year I spend my time teaching English: grammar, styled writing, paragraph frameworks and a smattering of really good literature, but in the summer I am able to get my hands dirty and build stuff. This year I picked two major projects. The first is going to be a covering for our outdoor patio, and the second will be a natural swimming pond. This post will be covering the former and you can check out our DIY pond here.
Wood Lattice Patio Cover Beam
Additionally, this structural component is sized specifically for each installation. Furthermore, the dimensions of the beam are determined by the length of the rafters as well as the width of the structure as a whole. Beam materials are typically constructed of Douglas Fir but can be a special structural system also known as a Glue Lam beam, made from individual wood pieces. Although wood is the most common material used, steel or are also options.
K Aluminum Patio Covers
Moreover, the cost between the 4K and the other companies is quite little, in comparison. 4K aluminum patio covers come in four colors to choose from. The powder coat used is a Jotum material but before the powder coat is applied, the aluminum will first receive a coat of Gold Chromate for pre-treatment. unlike other aluminum patio cover manufacturers, 4K offers this material as a corrosion inhibitor even to the inside of each part, where youd never expect to see it. Thats just one aspect of this material that takes it from the Mercedes Benz of aluminum patio covers to the Rolls Royce. So when we ask ourselves how much do patio covers cost we must ask ourselves first, what are the qualities of each patio cover being compared here.

Cost To Build A Covered Patio By Location
Most patios are located beside the home. This makes them easily accessible and still leaves plenty of space for the rest of the yard and landscaping. But patios can be located elsewhere on the property, particularly if you want them located beside another feature like a pool, tennis court, or fountain.;
The patio cover can also have different positions. If the patio is located beside the home, the cover can be either attached to the home, extending out over it, or it can be freestanding. When the patio is moved away from the home, the patio must be freestanding, limiting your choices for the cover. Both attached and freestanding covered patios have a wide range of costs because patios and covers come in many sizes and materials.

Step 3: Make The Posts Even
Next I scratched my head as I thought about how Id make sure that the tops of the three posts would be even once they were placed into the post holes. Moreover, without anyone to help hold things in place, I needed to figure out how to attach the rest of the frame to posts that would already be standing upright.
What I came up with worked, although I never saw it done on TV. I laid a board on the patio slab and set a bubble level on the end of that board. Then I took that end of the board to the hole and stood the 4×4 post up straight, holding it by hand, and lifted the board with the bubble level up until it was level and then made a mark on the 4×4 post. I then laid down the post and measured seven feet from its top and marked it. The difference between the two marks was how much taller I wanted the post to be, so I attached a length of treated 2×4 to the end, adding enough length to the post so that its height would be perfect. I did this for all three posts.

Creating A Lattice Panel
You are essentially going to sandwich the lattice screen between your frame creating a lattice panel. Layout your frame , place your lattice on top and then add 1×4s again on top of your lattice.
You will basically be cutting 2 pieces of 1×4s for each side. Use your stainless steel 1 5/8 to attach the pine to the lattice. Remember, screw from the inside out.
You want the side that you will see to be pretty, you do not want to be looking at screws! Look at my cute dad, he thinks Im crazy :). Dont be shy with your screws either and be sure to stagger them to prevent them from warping.
Note how we staggered the screws, this is very important according to my daddio!
Custom Wood Patio Covers
Another option is to hire a landscape contractor or carpenter to build you a custom wood patio cover. Going this route will allow you to completely customize your patio cover. Wood is an excellent material for custom designs because it can easily be cut on site to meet your size requirements. Furthermore, a custom patio cover can be constructed to let as little or as much light through as you desire.
A wooden patio cover can be finished in a number of ways. First, wood allows for staining or painting in whatever color you like. Second, decorative cuts can be made at the end of each piece of lumber, giving your patio cover a unique, finished appearance. Third, an experienced patio cover craftsman can incorporate wood benches, planters and lighting into the design.

Tips For Purchasing Materials
Stucco Patio Cover Cost
The average cost of a stucco 4 patio cover ranges from $20 to $45 a square foot installed. This is a two-part cover. You essentially have a cover built from another material like wood with stucco applied to that cover. The stucco is the long-lasting outer finish, but it is not what you build the cover from. There are three different stucco types used for this purpose – one-coat stucco, three-coat stucco, and exterior insulation and finish systems . The most common is the thin-coat or one-coat method of stucco. It is faster and easier to apply and less expensive.
Step 7: Finish The Job
After that it was simple but repetitive work. I attached 1 x 6 boards to the top of the joists, and then screwed the corrugated metal roof to them. The most difficult part was getting the upper end of the metal sheets to go under the drip edge and roof decking of the house and to butt up against a bead of clear-drying roof cement I had put in there with a caulking gun. Also, putting a bead of sealer along the edge of the metal sheets before overlapping them was a bit demanding, though absolutely necessary.
The job was done at that point. As for the corrugated metal roofing, I chose rubber washer metal-into-wood screws with ¼ bolt heads and used a ¼ magnetized drill adapted socket to put them in. That type of screw goes into every valley at the top and bottom ends of the panels and every other valley throughout the rest of the roof, into the 1 x 6 boards placed 24 on the center.
Set The Beam Over The Pergola Columns
Next, slip the molded base over the top of the column and then slip the capital on as well. Its best not to fasten these in place until the project is nearly completed. Measure the length of the front and back 2×10 beams , making them 3 in. less than the outside of the column tops, cut them to length and walk it up the ladder.
Note: If you have a column that wont quite straighten up, you can have someone push it straight up and down and then fasten it in place with the steel brackets from above.

On average, expect labor costs for the cover to range from $10 to $30 a square foot. But you may find that some materials and structure types have much higher or lower costs than this average range.
Step 1: Determine The Area
Before beginning to build a freestanding patio cover, you need to determine where you will build it. You can begin by marking the area where you want the cover to stand on.
You can use anything to mark the area. You can use some stakes and a rope to mark the section so that it will be more precise.
But if you want to mark it with simpler things, you can use spray paint or even boards. Anything will do.
Diy Patio Cover Size & Cost
The patio area to be covered is fairly large, 24X12, so spanning it became the major obstacle. The two choices were to run 12 beams and then get 24 engineered trusses to cover the span, or run 24 beams and run 12 2X8s to span the 10 gap. If we had chosen the former, we would have gone with a gabled ceiling trimmed out with tongue and groove cedar, and covered with asphalt shingles.

Vinyl patio covers fall between wood and aluminum. It is fabricated from PVC, giving a larger range for application. Did you know that PVC is most popular for being used in plumbing, with 75% of plumbing pipes being made from PVC worldwide? It can also be located in flooring, electrical piping, and clothing too. In the healthcare industry, PVC is used everywhere, from oxygen masks to surgical gloves.
Vinyl is a popular material because it resists frequently encountered issues with wood, such as warping, rot, insects, etc. Unlike Aluminum, it will not crack, fade, or rust. Although, there are cases where vinyl has yellowed over time. However, vinyl also shares various characteristics that aluminum provides.
The reason vinyl more expensive than aluminum covers is because it requires more material/product to install. Like wood, aluminum is a stand-alone product, where vinyl will need extra steel members installed for stability at each structural piece. These additional pieces increase the cost of vinyl patio covers, due to more material and labor. Aluminum and wood do not require any extra pieces to remain stable.
For a basic 10ft x 10ft fully covered vinyl patio cover, the average cost ranges between $3,825 $6,275.

They offer a solid cover, which keeps off the rain. However, unless the glass is tinted or shaded somehow, it does not offer much protection from the sun.
