Whats the best solution when the question is: -how do you harden sand between pavers?

Regular sand, on its own, despite serving this purpose very well, doesnt harden enough. The material does fill gaps between pavers and help lock the individual blocks in place quite well, so they dont shift. But, regular sand tends to become soft when wet.

However, when sealing the pavers surface, the substance also comes into contact with the sand. When this meeting occurs, it causes the two materials to form an alloy, similar to mortar. Thus, effectively hardening the sand and helping to fix it.

If possible, use irregular, sharp-grained sand, as they have sharp edges and bind together better.

Filling Pavers With Moss

Pull any existing weeds and scrape out the filling between pavers using a spade, if you are working with an existing patio.

Fill in the space between pavers using garden soil. Only fill the spaces about half full, leaving enough room to transplant the moss.

Gather live moss growing around your property, carefully removing it from the ground along with some of the soil it is growing in, using a small trowel.

Moisten the soil between the pavers and the underside of the moss sections you have gathered using water from the garden hose.

Pack the moss firmly into the spaces between the pavers, using your trowel to cut strips of moss from larger pieces, if necessary. Tamp down the moss by stepping on it.

Wet down the moss using the garden hose and water it once a day for three weeks or so, until the moss becomes established. After the moss has settled in you may only need to water it when it begins to dry out or lose its color.

Polymeric sand is a blend of properly graded fine sand and a binder compound that is specially formulated for filling in the joints between bricks, pavers and natural stones for hardscapes such as patios, driveways and walkways. Polymeric sand was invented by Techniseal in 1999, and it has improved;the installation and maintenance of brick and stone hardscapes.

After the paving stone surfaces have been cleaned with a power washer its best to let them dry completely before applying the polymeric sand. ;If its wet out and you try sweeping the sand into the cracks it just creates a big mess and takes longer. ;This process is best done on a nice day when the driveway is DRY but only AFTER its already been power washed. ;You do not want to apply the sand and power wash after as this will be a complete waste of some very expensive sand!

After the polymeric sand has been carefully swept into the cracks between the bricks or paving stones and compacted, the driveway can be sprayed down with water. ;The water will be absorbed by the polymeric sand and it will then harden in between the cracks. ;The hardened;sand will resist weed growth in between the paving stones for quite some time, will help hold the bricks in place, and it also helps stop burrowing insects from making nests under your paving stones.

How To Repair A Crack In A Flagstone Patio

Flagstones form a sturdy base for a patio, and the variety of sizes, shapes and colors allow the installer to create unique patterns and designs. As reliable as these stones are, weathering and time will eventually wear down the stones, leading to cracks in the stones themselves. Patch cracks in flagstones with cement or concrete patches and mortar that will seal up the damage and stop your flagstones from looking broken and worn.

Use a wire brush to scrape away loosened or pointed edges of the crack. Sweep or vacuum up debris with a wet/dry vacuum.

Wear goggles to protect yourself from shrapnel and use a chisel and hammer to undercut the crack. Expand the crack to at least an inch deep. Chisel the bottom of the crack so it looks like an upside down V, with the bottom wider than the top. This will help spread the patching material into the crack.

Sweep or vacuum all debris from chiseling so the area is free of dust. Dampen the crack and the surrounding edges with clean water, but do not let water settle into the crack. There should be no standing water in your repair area.

Fill The Gap Between A Concrete Patio And House

Weve noticed water damage in our sunroom, which is;bordered on one side by our;concrete patio. After a;quick investigation we believe that;water has entered the gap between the patio and the foundation. If were right;then that hopefully accounts for the water damage.

The gap in question was;previously filled with either fiberboard or concrete crack sealant, but;enough of it;has deteriorated to conceivably allow moisture in.
