Avoid Exciting Games Until Business Is Taken Care Of

While trying to housetrain any dog it is important you keep them from being distracted. Avoid playing with them until the business is taken care of they will be much more interested in a game of tug or playing with a ball than going to the loo. Keep the games for afterwards when not only will they enjoy the playtime but see it as a reward.

Limit Drinks Before Bed

Although it is advisable to have a constant supply of clean fresh water available for your dog at all times for dogs who are having problems going through the night without an accident it might be wise to limit their intake on an evening say after 8.00pm.

Common sense is needed here though if they have been on a late-night walk, enjoyed a strenuous game or the weather is hot dont let them go thirsty.

Have A Strict Schedule

How to Get Dog to Stop Peeing on Patio

Once medical issues have been ruled out, and assuming you’ve gone through housebreaking and crate training with your dog, the next steps to prevent a dog from peeing in the crate are through supervision and a strict schedule which you keep.

The routine rule applies for your house/crate training phases, as well as for anything that comes after that. Have a crate training schedule that your dog is familiar with, and then set strict times for feeding, sleeping, going outside and other. After your pet adjusts to these times, they are less likely to pee before the time comes. However, if you break the schedule, this may cause anxiety for the dog, and they are likely to pee indoors.

Feeding schedule in particular can also be used to take control over when your pup is to eliminate themselves. Dogs that eat and then drink some will usually need to eliminate themselves within 15 to 30 minutes. So unless you’re free-feeding your pet, take advantage of this predictable behavior.

Even house-trained dogs will pee inside on area rugs if they are locked inside too long. To avoid indoor urination becoming a prevalent thing in your house, make sure that you are giving your dog frequent potty breaks.

How To Stop Your Puppy From Peeing In The House

Vinegars strong smell naturally deters dogs. The added lime juice helps to reduce the overall odor for people, while still working as a citrus doggy deterrent.

Coffee filters usually degrade over time which makes this method suitable for direct use on a flower bed or lawn. You can also find biodegradable filters that break down even faster if you like.

Soak your coffee filters in white vinegar and a little bit of lime juice. Once the filters dry, cut them into strips and place around the area you want to keep dogs away from.

This method is safe for plants, and shouldnt present any harm to doggos either.

How Do I Remove The Urine

Firstly you need to find all the spots where urine might be on your concrete patio. Sometimes this is easy if you know your dog only pees in a particular place. If you have recently moved into the house, have a new pet who pees in different locations, or are not confident you know exactly where the urine is, you will need to be careful to identify all the urine locations on the concrete.

The best solution is to obtain a blacklight, which is a type of UV light. Remove your patio furniture and scan the concrete patio carefully in sections. Old urine stains will show up as green, yellow, or blue marks. As liquid can spread through concrete, make sure you do a thorough scan of the patio. It is worth scanning the walls and sides of the patio too. Marking the spots you find with chalk can help you remember the locations.

Sometimes the blacklight does not show any stains, even though the urine odors are present. You may have to resort to crouching down on the concrete and using your nose to identify the areas where the smell is coming from. An option many people take up is to decide to clean and treat all areas of the concrete patio to ensure no area of pet urine is missed.

Puppy Pees On His Bedding

It is unusual for a dog to soil their bedding. Even so waterproof dog bedding is essential, if your pooch has the odd accident. It could also be a housebreaking problem in which case you need to remove all odour from the bedding by using a product specifically for the job as puppies will use the same spot again if they can small even the slightest scent and go back to the basics of house training putting him outside every time he wakes up, have something to eat or every hour.

It could also be territorial marking. Is he the only pet in the house? If this is the case there are sprays available to discourage marking but neutering is the best way to solve the problem.

Why Do Dogs Urinate On Plants

Although territorial scent marking does occur in both sexes, if youre seeing your upright plants wither and die, a male dog is likely to blame.

You see, a male dogs instinct dictates that possessions need to be properly marked and labeled as his. If you spend some time closely observing a male dog, youll see that as soon as he encounters the urine of another dog , he will go to great lengths to cover it with his own pee.

Its almost as if he is saying, Ha! My pee has wiped yours out and mine is just a bit higher than yours is. I am the winner!

In the never-ending struggle to establish his supreme rule of the land, a male dog may view any upright object as fair game, especially if another dog is nearby.

    Incontinence And Health Problems

Urinary incontinence is often associated with senior dogs, but it’s possible for a dog to develop incontinence as a young adult. If your dog is leaking or dribbling sporadically or leaving urine puddles in the bed or on the floor during naps, incontinence may be the culprit. If your dog is incontinent, it’s important to know is that your dog doesn’t realize it’s happening and has no control over it. Fortunately, incontinence can sometimes be treated with medication.

On the other hand, if your dog consciously pees large quantities in inappropriate areas, it’s probably not incontinence. Talk to your vet to learn more.

Certain health problems may lead to urinary issues, such as kidney disease, diabetes, and Cushing’s disease. Your vet may recommend additional diagnostic testing to rule out one or more diseases depending on your dog’s other symptoms . Treatment will depend on the diagnosis.

Make Sure Your Dog Has Regular Outdoor Time

I almost didnt want to list this as it sounds so obvious, but there is one part to it that can really help in preventing your dog from peeing on furniture, and thats the rewarding.

As with any dog training, positive reinforcement and reward is how they learn to do what you want them to do.

So, as well as making sure your dog gets enough time outside to do the business, when he or she does, offer a large reward. This should be vocalized and in the form of treats.

    Use A Commercial Carpet Solution

You are certainly not the first pet owner to experience having a dog pee on brand new carpet and rugs, and unfortunately, you also wont be the last. Commercial cleaning solutions are an easy and effective way to eliminate urine odors on your throw rug while also discouraging future accidents in that spot. Commercial carpet cleaning solutions contain ingredients like lemongrass or cinnamon which discourage your dog or puppy from peeing on the area rug again.

    Learn Your Dog’s Routine

Learn about your dog’s behaviors and routine. Many dogs urinate, at minimum, a few times per day, even as adults. Because they wait to go outside, housebroken indoor dogs are the easiest to train not to use the bathroom on the patio, because they already know the basics. The first several hours after feeding are typically when dogs have to defecate. To train your dog not to use the bathroom on the porch, you should learn their normal patterns.

Why Does My Puppy Pee On The Floor

When dogs occasionally pee on the floor for no apparent reason, it’s usually because of submissive or excitement urination. These are two different triggers, although the outcome is the same.

Highly excitable puppies can sometimes wee when you come home or when they meet new people. This is known as excitement urination, and it can also happen during very active play.

Most dogs grow out of it, but theres plenty you can do to help change their behaviour.

Submissive urination happens with dogs or puppies who are submissive and want to show that they are not a threat. It is common in rescued dogs and shy, anxious and timid canines.

It mainly occurs in puppies, but can also be a problem in adult dogs. Again, consistency and patient training can put a stop to the problem.

If your dog urinates indoors or at inappropriate moments, its important to visit your vet to rule out medical causes before trying behaviour modification.

Tests can show whether your four-legged friend has a urinary tract infection, cystitis or bladder stones, for example.

Your vet will also check for any signs of kidney disease or diabetes, both of which can lead to inappropriate or excessive urination.

    Rule Out Any Illnesses

When Can Puppies Go Outside To Pee

The most important step is to rule out any medical issues that could be causing your dog to pee in the crate. The most common condition to cause this is UTI . Before going to the veterinarian, note the following

    • How often your dog is urinating in the crate?
    • Any unusual odor or discoloration ?
    • Any recent changes to your dog’s diet?
    • Any changes or additions of new medications or supplements?

Senior dogs may start peeing in the crate as they are more prone to medical conditions that can cause incontinence or other urine-related illnesses.
