Make Your Light Fixtures Irritating

So theres no food source on your porch, no trees to extend to your house, and no feeding. Whats the culprit? Your porch light fixture. This part of your porch gives birds enough warmth and a place to nest. Its actually a perfect place to leave their eggs for hatching because of the heat it emits when in use. But this doesnt mean you have to remove the light fixture. You just have to make the top part irritating or impossible to land at.

One way to do this is to install appropriate bird spikes to that fixture. The Abco Bird Spikes is one of the best options since its made of plastic and it wont make your porch light look awful. Every spike is about 48 cm long and you can cut it to surround the top part of your light fixture. Use the excess spikes to bird proof your fence or roof ledge.

Add A Plastic Owl To Your Patio Deck

Birds fear predator birds and will instantly fly away from them the moment they see one. So by simply adding a plastic owl to your patio deck, birds such as sparrows, crows, pigeons, and starlings will view your patio deck as an unsuitable space for them to build a home.

Check out this plastic owl:

Make A Deterrent Spray

You can use essential oils like lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon, grapefruit or orange and put them in the spraying bottle with a liter of water and spray around the patio. Another thing you can use for the spray is cayenne pepper. Before pouring anything, clear the bottle and its pipes so it wouldnt get blocked. Take one tablespoon of cayenne pepper and put it in the spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water afterward and shake it well. Make sure to test all of the sprays on the distinct part of the furniture before applying it just to make sure that it wont damage the material.

Make sure that you buy a new plastic bottle and not use the one that you find around the house since the residue chemicals can alter the mix.

Do Wind Chimes Keep Birds Away

Wind chimes can be used as a bird deterrent. There are different sizes of wind chimes and the larger ones are more effective.

This is because larger wind chimes produce louder noises. Birds do not like loud noises and will stay away from areas that are filled with them.

The constant clashing sounds will startle the birds and make them feel threatened. This will prompt them to leave your premises and look for a quieter environment.

Small wind chimes produce a softer sound which is more appealing to the birds. The sound from small wind chimes may actually attract birds. So if your mission is to repel rather than attract, using large wind chimes would be your best option.

If you want to remove birds from your yard entirely, the wind chimes should be installed in areas where the birds are most likely to visit. These include your patio, rooftop, barn, fences, and trees.

If your goal is to control their population only in a specific area of your property, the wind chimes should be installed in that section alone.

If you want to keep birds away from the porch of your house, then you can simply employ some methods, such as using small mirrors or reflective tape, bird deterrents or repellents, bird mesh netting, and keeping their predators as pets, such as an owl or cat.

Birds build their nests near the house because of the easy access to the garden and all of their necessities. Birds easily get water, food, and a safe place to be away from their predators, etc. Generally, nests are built in vents, under eaves, porches, patio covers, and under solar panels. It is not necessary for them to build the nest there, but it can also be on the rooftops, especially in the case of larger birds. Bird X Bird spikes are the most expensive bird spikes and the scent of garlic water or cayenne pepper can keep birds away.

So, if you spot that birds have conquered your property, especially the porch areas of the house, then you really need to be very active in your yard as well as the house property. Commonly, pigeons are known to build their houses near human settlements, but the list of birds is not limited to them. What Scares Birds: A Review Of 7 Best Methods

If exclusion is not possible or economically feasible, try reducing the attractiveness of the roosting and nesting sites. These non-lethal methods are safe for people, livestock, and non-target wildlife, but they are often time-consuming to install and expensive, as the experts from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences explain.

To counter birds arrival or nesting, use physical barriers such as spikes on ledges, nets, protecting horticultural crops from eating, changing the angle of slope of the eaves and windowsills. Thorns and nets will help fight pigeons and larger birds, but small species will be able to settle between spikes or climb into the net cells. In addition, plants and other attractive places or objects can be treated with a spray or a gel with an unpleasant odor that will irritate birds mucous membranes. Upon having such a negative experience, a flock or an individual will flee the place.

To scare away all types of birds, the scientists suggest using deterring methods either in interchange or combination. The simplest option is to use dummies and scarecrows resembling predatory birds or even eyes. The scientists also approve of using reflective devices: tapes, rods and discs. This is one of the most common methods but it still has a few catches: pests get used to them quickly. They are also quite pointless in calm and gloomy weather when reflective devices dont rock or make noise.

Prevention: Its Easier To Prevent A Problem Rather Than To Deal With It

Follow a set of simple rules when housekeeping or maintaining retail space to avoid any possible interest from birds. It is recommended to use bird-protected storage in grain barns and special feeders and drinkers on livestock farms. Also remember to keep the place clean.

Hang plastic strips to fully cover the entrance to retail spaces and allow people carrying heavy bags or trolleys to move around. Make sure you block ventilation and other possible entrances to the room, isolate truss structures and repair windows.

Do Fake Owls Keep Birds Away

Fake owls can absolutely keep many smaller species of birds away from your patio.

They function as scarecrows, much in the same way as rubber snakes and scarecrows. Ive actually found the less realistic-looking owls work better than their ultra-realistic cousins. You can find an example of a realistic-looking owl at this link and decide for yourself.

Be forewarned fake owls will not phase larger species of birds, as owls are not one of their natural predators. In this case, an actual scarecrow would probably work better.

Remove Bird Baths & Fountains

Getting rid of birds / crows from my swimming pool

The following few tips are less to do with scaring birds away, and more to do with making your yard, deck, and pool less appealing to birds in the first place. If you have a birdbath or fountain in your yard, thats essentially an open invitation for birds to visit the area.

Birds adore water sources that they can not only drink from but bathe in as well.

If you have a birdbath or fountain, you might want to think about removing it or at least relocating it to a far end of your property where bird droppings wont bother you as much. If you take away their bathing station, theyll be on the lookout for somewhere better to hang around.

The Starling Invasion: My Experience

In 2016, I bought a property in the countryside. The company who developed the housing estate cleared a large portion of savanna grassland and the adjoining tropical rain forest for this plus other projects like growing oil palm. They destroyed the natural habitat of the animals.

Whilst the bigger tropical birds like the hornbill, cockatoo, hawks, owls, and eagles moved deep into the rainforest, the smaller starlings and those little noisy birds that live in savanna grass made their habitation with the humans.

In the wild, we have a big population of black starlings, birds that are native to Asia, Europe, Africa, northern Australia and the three main groups of the tropical islands of the Pacific Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia.

As if in vengeance, the black starlings and the brown little grass birds would claim the houses as their habitat as soon as they are built. The black noisy starlings are very invasive. Their population is ever increasing and they are annoying in many ways.

You are not alone. I understand how frustrating it can be trying to keep birds off your patio furniture and deck permanently.
