What Size Rebar Should I Use

The installation of the rebar is critical for the success of the overall project. Rebar should be placed evenly throughout the project. For a flat slab, such as a driveway, consider placing the rebar in an 18 inch grid spacing, keeping the edge rebar at the same distance from each side. For a patio you can use a grid spacing of 24 inches.

As an example, if you have a 10 foot driveway, you would start the first row of rebar at 15 inches from the edge and then lay another 5 pieces of rebar at 18 inch centers. This would leave 15 inches from the opposite edge, as shown in Figure 2.

To create a strong grid of rebar, it is important that where ever two or more pieces or rebar cross, that they are joined together as shown in Figure 3, with rebar tie wire, as shown in Figure 4.

A special rebar tie wire hand tool, as shown in Figure 5, is available to aid in tightly twisting the wire around the rebar.

Rebar should not be joined at the corners, and because of this rebar manufacturer’s provide rebar that is bend at a 90 degree angle, as shown in Figure 6.

What Thickness Must Concrete Be For Rebar

The American Concrete Institute lists the factors that play a role in how thick the covering concrete must be to support rebar.

The reinforced concrete that can generally support the thinnest covering is the precast variant. The reason for this is that precast concrete, made in a manufacturing plant, is far more precise than the alternative. Getting the casting of rebar correct is vital to the effectiveness of the reinforcement.

Cast-in-place concrete requires the placement of wet concrete around the rebar, then holding it in place as it sets and dries around it. This is usually done with rebar supports that help hold it at the correct depths, but this does open it up to a certain level of operator error.

Both prestressed and non-prestressed cast-in-place concrete, regardless of the reinforcement used, requires three inches of concrete over the rebar when in permanent contact with the ground .

If you didnt cast it on the ground and it isnt exposed to the weather, then you can get by with about an inch.

For a precast reinforced concrete slab, the minimum cover required is -inch for #11 bar and lower. For a cast-in-place concrete slab, this sits around ¾-inch. You cannot achieve this thin level of concrete when exposed to the weather or in contact with the ground.

The size of the rebar used is another condition that affects the required thickness of the concrete with thicker bars requiring more concrete placed on top.

One: Figure Out The Grid Spacing

Rebar is often installed in a grid pattern, and to estimate the amount needed it will be important to first identify the size and spacing is appropriate for your project. For a patio it is common to use a #3 bar spaced every 18-24 while for a driveway #4 bar is often used with a 12-18 spacing.

Different projects require a different size rebar and will require the rebar to be spaced differently. Most projects require rebar to be laid in a grid pattern with bars running in opposite directions and overlapping.

Determine The Amount Of Rebar Required For The Foundation Walls

The next thing that you need to consider is that every four feet of the foundation wall will require concrete and rebar. So, if you have a foundation wall that is 140 feet in total, you would divide that by four, to get a total of 35, which is the number of block cells that will need to be filled with rebar and concrete.

Now, if your foundation is 32 inches, this means that you need to multiply those 32 inches by the 35 slots, which equals 1,120 inches. You need this measurement to be in feet, so divide 1,120 by 12, which equals 93.3 feet of rebar. Remember that you will also need five pieces of 20-foot rebar for the vertical runs.

A Good Base Is Everything

Concrete will crack and crumble if its not poured over a solid, stable base. Bringing in 4 to 6-in. of a good compact-able base is a good rule of thumb, but the exact amount of base a concrete driveway needs depends on the condition of the existing soil, the climate, and what you plan to park on your driveway.

You may be able to pour directly over sandy or gravelly soil without bringing in any additional base. But if you live in a cold climate, are pouring over heavy clay or organic soil, or plan to park heavy vehicles on the driveway, you may want to increase the base layer to 10 or 12-in.

The best way to find out how much base you need is to contact the nearest concrete supplier. If you explain your soil conditions and the slabs intended use, the supplier should be able to recommend the proper base depth and the type to use and provide contact info for a nearby base supplier.
