How To Stencil Tiles On Cement Outdoor Patio

Step 1. Pressure wash the porch & let it dry. We had a small pressure washer that worked great for cleaning off our covered porch. But unfortunately my husband broke it while spraying off the porch furniture, so Im eyeing this pressure washer for our next purchase.

Step 2. Tape off anything you dont want painted with painters tape. I dont do this step because Im pretty good at using free hand with my Purdy brush. But if youre not sure if you can keep paint off your brick or other parts of your home, use the tape!

Step 3. Apply 1 coat of Valspars Concrete Binding Primer. Allow it to dry 1-4 hours before applying your paint. This stuff went on like a glue, which was a transparent white color. But then dried clear. It was dried to the touch after about 2 hours. You will want to follow the instructions on the can, which say to apply the paint within 4 hours of applying the binding primer.

Step 4. Apply 2 coats of Valspars Porch, Floor and Patio latex paint. Youll want to make the decision whether or not to do 2 coats. Mine was mostly fine after the first coat, but I like a 2nd coat just for good measure. Let the first coat dry overnight before painting the 2nd coat.

Step 5. Wait 72 hours before you move your furniture back onto the porch.

Thats it! Yay!!!

It was such a simple and easy process. Im not sure why it took me so long to get it done! If youre on the fence to change your patio with a little bit of paint just go for it!

Let The Stenciling Begin

Okay, NOW for the fun part! I ordered my stencil months ago, after spotting it at Royal Stencils how gorgeous is their Mandala Fusion stencil?

It reminded me of tile, which was the look I wanted, and its available in a 26×26 size, making it perfect for larger spaces like walls and floors. Ive used Royal Stencils in the past and even posted a blog and video tutorial if you need a guide for stenciling walls.

Stenciling a concrete patio, however, is a slightly different beast so keep reading to see how I did it:

The good news is that if youve ever stenciled a wall beforethis is EASIER! For a few reasons:

  • On the ground you dont have gravity working against you
  • Textured surfaces hide all the small imperfections
  • Its outdoors, so its not held to the same standards of perfection of an interior space!
  • All of these reasons should take the pressure off and make it a much more enjoyable experience. Even though this took me 27 hours, it was easy breezy compared to my past wall stenciling experiences.

Now that you have your supplies ready to go, the biggest decision you have to make is where to start. On a wall, you just have to make sure its level.

It didnt really matter where along this line I started, but I roughly measured out to both ends to ensure I wouldnt be left with a tiny sliver on either side

From there it was simply rinse and repeat. The brush worked very well, but faced with days of work ahead of me, I tried a roller brush just to see if it would be faster.

But How Does It Hold Up

I waited 6 months to write this because I wanted to be able to report on how the painted patio was holding up. And Im very happy to report it still looks amazing. We have had lots of foot traffic over it, its in full sun for several hours each day, and we have had several drenching rain storms and it weathered it all well. The surface is not slippery at all, even when its wet.

We recently had a big party and I wanted to clean up beforehand. I pulled out the power washer to clean off the patio and now it looks just as good as it did on day 1. Even power washing the paint did not cause it to peel or chip at all, it just lifted out the dirt from every day use.

I would definitely recommend this project to anyone looking to spruce up a boring concrete patio!

How To Paint And Stencil A Concrete Porch Or Patio

    • Pin

Painting a concrete porch floor will make it and the space around it look so much better. Why not take it one step further and stencil a design over it to make it look like a tiled, stone or brick floor. Stenciling is not hard and is a very budget-friendly way to get the look of costly wallpaper, floor tile or even an area rug.

I have used an allover stencil to hide the imperfections on the walls in my guest bath and even used one on a shower door. I have also used an allover stencil to create the look of wallpaper in the foyer of my previous home.

Last week I had the opportunity to paint a concrete porch using floor paint and a stencil.

I went into mom mode x 2. Ed and I went up to Charlottesville to watch our 2-year old granddaughter for a week while my older daughter and son-in-law went to California to look for a place to live. They are moving there in June. 🙁

My younger daughter also lives in Charlottesville and I got to spend lots of time with her and her boyfriend while also helping her paint and stencil the concrete front porch of their house.

As you can see from the BEFORE photo above, the concrete porch floor had been painted grey at one time, but was worn and ready for a paint makeover.

So we got to work to give this floor a whole new look using paint and an allover stencil to make the floor look like it was tiled in a herringbone design.

Jenna Sue Design is no stranger to DIY projects and affordable home decor hacks. She loves finding ways to renovate homes without the costly expense of a professional. Her biggest project to date was actually one of her easiest! She had a BIG concrete patio floor that needed some BIG help. Just look at the before… YIKES!

Instead of hiring an expensive contractor, she opted to renovate the patio herself while pregnant! Keep reading to see how she used Floor Stencils& Tile Stencils from Royal Design Studio to add some BIG pattern to a BIG space without needing a BIG wallet

Jenna removed the cracked and flaking layers of old paint with a power washer and putty knife. She then used concrete crack seal on the multiple cracks she found.

To paint the stripped and prepped concrete, she used Behr Concrete & Garage Floor Paint in a gray color and a nap paint roller made for textured surfaces.

After spotting the Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil from Royal Design Studio, she knew she had to have it. Jenna says, How gorgeous is this stencil? It reminded me of tile, which was the look I wanted, and its a large stencil, making it perfect for larger spaces like walls and floors.

After stenciling the first repeat, she removed the floor stencil and repositioned it by aligning the built in registration marks. These registration marks aligns the stencil perfectly every time! This can be done rather quickly as the paint dried since she used minimal paint to begin with.

How To Prepare Your Concrete Floor For Stenciling

Begin by sanding away any stubborn bumps and irregularities, such as paint, dirt, or plaster from the concrete floor you want to stencil. A smooth surface is very important for stenciling, because paint will pool around any bumps and mar the stencil design. Next, clean the floor with a damp cloth. .

Can You Paint Over Stamped Concrete

Repainting a stencilled concrete surface is a more challenging job than freshly painting it. Old concrete is covered with sealers, old paint, and dirt, making the job difficult but not impossible. Stamped concrete doesnt have a smooth surface and has rough joints. Repainting it the wrong way may result in chunks of paint collected on those pocks. This is why recommended to hand paint stencilled concrete.

How To Stencil A Concrete Patio For A Budget

A seasoned home remodeler and DIYer used a high-impact stencil to revamp a drab outdoor space. Get her tricks for this stenciled concrete patio to pave the way for your own backyard makeover.

As much as Jenna LeBlanc would have loved to retile the patio behind her Tampa home, she didn’t want to buy 650-plus square feet of tiles. More in line with her budget was paint and a stencil she had been eyeing online. So she and her husband pried up the old tiles, then prepped and painted the concrete underneath. Proper surface prep was key, Jenna says, but in the end, she had to let go of precision. “The benefit of it being an outdoor space is that it doesn’t have to be perfect.”

Jenna, who shares her projects on her blog Jenna Sue Design, stenciled a design to mimic Moroccan tile. The 28×28-inch stencil created a single, high-impact medallion. “There was a point a few hours in where I thought, Wow, what was I thinking?” she says. But after getting the hang of it, she cut her time from 25 minutes per medallion to 5 minutes, completing the stenciling in 27 hours over two weeks. Concrete patios with minor damage, but in otherwise good condition, can be transformed with concrete resurfacing. Instead of starting over with a new patio, you can upgrade its appearance and strength with a cement-based overlay.

Your resurfaced concrete patio can be stamped, stained, or stenciled and have color added. A professional contractor can determine if your surface is a good candidate, as well as make it look like wood, brick or stone with a combination of different colors and patterns.

    Stenciled Concrete Patio: Stenciling

Youll want to pick a corner of your patio to start from and work in rows from there.

The stencil comes with the main large stencil as well as a smaller edge stencil. This is the one youll typically start with, as shown below.

The key to stenciling is to keep your paint light and to not apply too much pressure. I talk more about this in the video I linked above.

I rolled my high-density foam roller in the paint and then rolled it on a piece of scrap cardboard each time to be sure I didnt have too much paint on my roller.

    Heres What Youll Need:

    • Tape
    • Hydration, sunscreen, bluetooth speaker, bug spray
    • Optional but very helpful: leaf blower

Our story goes deeper than just stenciling, though. It begins in a world of a patio partially covered in mismatched brown and white giraffe tile.

Well never know what was going through the minds of the people who thought this was a great idea.

In February we began the process of removing the offending tiles, and luckily since they werent installed properly, they came up without a fight.

Underneath the surface was what I assumed to be mold and mildew after who knows how many Florida summers.

But then, upon closer inspection, we realized that nope, this was in fact, green paint.

Power washing quickly commenced, revealing not just one layer of paint, but two the always in-style, neon and emerald green.

More hues of pink and purple were slowly uncovered, revealing a colorful and curious past life. Oh, if this patio could talk.

A full afternoon of pressure washing was as good as it was going to get, and we called it a night.
