Add A Protective Coat

Before painting, I first cleaned them with all-purposed cleaner and a scotch pad sponge. ;I also went over the rusty spots with a metal wire brush to remove any loose pieces of paint or rust.

Its important to prime those places where rust is forming;because if they arent primed, the rust will come right through the new coat of paint. ;For those rusty spots, I used rusty metal primer.

Then, I gave each chair a quick coat with clean metal primer to ensure the new paint would adhere beautifully to the chairs.

I used a gloss spray paint in six bright colors to change things up for this little patio set.

Each chair needed two coats of spray paint, which ended up being one full can of paint per chair.

When spraying chairs, the trick is to give two coats of paint with the chairs upside down, let them dry completely, and then flip them over and give two coats of paint to the front sides that werent hit when the chairs were upside down. ;

My girls each have their favorite colored chair to sit in, and Mommy gets the green chair that rocks. ;My four-year-old daughter commented that she didnt like that I chose my favorite colors for the rocking chairs instead of her favorite color, purple. ;I told her that when she starts painting furniture she can decide the color she wants to paint it. ;I may regret that statement in a couple of years

The Easy Way To Refinish Wooden Patio Furniture

As the season winds to a close, you may notice the patio furniture you’ve been sitting in and lounging on all summer is starting to look a little worse for wear. While well worn furniture is a sign that it’s also well-loved, caring for it ensures you’ll get to keep enjoying it for years to come.

Of all the materials used to craft the most popular types of patio furniture, wood furniture is usually the first to show signs of damage from the environment, and regular use. The good news is, you can easily get it looking like new in a few easy steps.

Strip The Finish

The first step to refreshing your patio furniture is to strip the old finish. Working in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, set up your the piece you will be refinishing on a tarp or drop cloth or other cover to protect your work surface from drips, stains, and damage. Secure your cover in place with tape.

Remove any loose paint or finish by going over the entire piece with a paint scraper or by sanding. Take care not to damage the wood by sanding too deeply. Consider switching to a fine-grit sandpaper or sponge to sand around decorative and curved details.

If you’re comfortable with chemicals, you can use a chemical stripping agent. Follow the manufacturers instructions of use, but in general, you should apply the remover with a medium-sized plaint brush over the entire surface. Let the solution soak for 20 to 30 minutes, but don’t allow it to dry.

Replacing A Mesh Sling

BEFORE YOU START

· Order a new sling: To find width, measure from the center of one rail to the center of the opposite rail at the bolt locations typically found at the top and bottom of the sling. To find length, lay a cloth tape measure along the top face of one rail so it follows the rail’s curvature.

1. Slash the old sling down the middle with a utility knife. Remove the end cap on each side rail.

2. Slide the two halves of the sling out of their tracks in the chair’s rails. Loosen but don’t remove the bolts that attach the rails to the chair frame, then pop out the spreader bar.

3. Remove one rail entirely. Hold the sling with its hem side to the back and slide its nylon rod into the track of the rail that’s still attached to the chair frame.

4. Slide the detached rail over the sling’s other nylon rod. Bolt this rail back on the frame. Tighten the loose bolts on the opposite rail to make the sling taut.

5. Reinsert the spreader bar. Use a pipe clamp to spread the rails slightly; if need be, bend the bar a bit to make it fit, then hit it with a rubber mallet to restore its shape.

6. With a wire cutter, trim each rod flush with the end of the rail. Push the end caps back on the rails.

Tip

Prevent future damage by wiping away spills as soon as they happen and rinsing the furniture with fresh water.

Clean the patio resin furniture every few weeks to every few months, depending on how often you use the furniture.

Resin is a strong and durable material often used in the construction of patio furniture. This type of furniture tends to resemble plastic furniture in shape because, similarly to plastic, the resin is molded to create the pieces. However, leaving the patio furniture outside causes the pieces to look dingy and faded. Exposure to the sun fades darker colors, while environmental elements make white furniture look dingy and gray. Luckily, restoring the resin patio furniture makes the pieces look exactly like they did when you first brought them home.

  • Brush off any leaves or debris on the surface of the furniture.

  • Apply a thin layer of citrus-based cleaner to a soft cloth and wipe the cleaner all over the pieces. Rinse the cleaner away with your garden hose and then dry the pieces with paper towels.

  • Wipe down the entire surface of the furniture with a damp paper towels. Rub the wet towels over the top and bottom of all of the furniture pieces to wipe away any ground-in dirt, stains left behind by spilled drinks and any other light stains.
