Can You Stain An Existing Concrete Patio

10 Ideas How to Makeover Concrete Patio for Small Backyard

Stains are effective in revitalizing dull, lackluster surfaces with minimal to no damage. An existing concrete slab with major cracks or spalling is usually not a good candidate for staining because any patchwork is likely to show right through the stain.

Like stains for wood, concrete stains are semi-transparent and are intended to enhance rather than disguise the surface. They will not hide cracks, blemishes or other flaws in existing concrete. Nor will they completely mask an underlying color or conceal the texture of the surface.

How to Transform an Old, Tired, Cracked Concrete Patio ...

Sometimes trying to figure out your dogs urine spots is easy and sometimes not. If you were able to train your dog to pee in a particular place, good job for you! However, there are still some dogs out there who have not found their perfect place yet and they tend to pee in different locations. This usually happens when you move into a new house or when you decide to adopt or buy a dog for yourself.

A way we can detect the urine spots of your dog is to use a UV light or a black light. This magic wonder can get the precise location of even the tiniest urine spots and locate where the unpleasant smell is coming from. This tool gives off ultraviolet light which allows it to detect even old urine stains and spots on your concrete. Make sure to darken your place first and not to move it more than three feet away from the concrete when using this tool. Urine stains usually appear as blue, green, or yellow when viewed under the UV light.

Once you can already find where the urine spot is, you can now start with your journey on cleaning your dogs urine.

How To Get Rust Stains Off Concrete

DIY Patio Transformation on a Budget | How to paint – Stencil Concrete Patio Slabs

Rust stains on the concrete around your home, like in your driveway or garage, is a common problem, especially for those who rely on well water, because well water tends to contain high levels of iron. It can be challenging to prevent rust stains, and if not adequately removed they can quickly become an eyesore in the neighborhood.

Using all-natural products that you can find around your home is one of the most inexpensive and effective ways to remove rust stains from concrete, as well as any other ugly discolorations. This recipe also works as a way to clean a brick wall that may accumulate rust from a leaky faucet or gutter.

  • Spray bottle

For cleaning concrete, pour the lemon juice or vinegar directly onto the rust stain and allow it to sit for ten minutes, so the ingredients can fully penetrate the rust. Using the scrub brush, scrub the stain, using a considerable amount of pressure. Rinse the area off with cold water.

If you have hard to reach rust stains, you can use a spray bottle to saturate the stain with lemon juice or vinegar. Spray the stain with the ingredients and follow the above process. Lemon juice and vinegar are both great solutions for removing rust stains because they are highly acidic. The acid reacts with the rust, which causes it to dissolve.

Use this recipe for how to clean rust off stainless steel or to get tarnish off other metals, too. You must be careful to rub with the grain, however, or you risk scratching the surface.

Roll On Clear Coat Sealer

This section is the second section I went on to. I remembered to take a pic of putting on the sealer. It goes on milky white and dries clear. Youll want to add 2 coats of clear to finish it off. These 2 coats go on fast!

And heres a shot from above of the first 2 sections done. I am in love with it already and Im so happy I tackled this labor intensive time consuming project. I sweated a lot doing the first section, but it had started to cool off by the time I got to the second section.

And now Im moving on to Section 3! I definitely didnt think Id get it all done this fast, but the weather cooperated and so my energy level was up and I just kept going. Im so glad I got it all finished just in time for Fall and Winter. Some of these pics are better than others but you get the idea.

On to Section #3!

I got out our Ryobi pressure washer and cleaned that section thoroughly. I love this machine, I can start it myself! I let it dry overnight before starting, then did the primer and taped it off.

Base coat time.

Above shot after base coat is applied.

I taped around the faux stone wall we put up last year since I wanted to protect that and the house. You cant see the tape, but its there.

Update With Pavers Or Stones

One of the most drastic ways to completely change the look of your patio is with pavers or stones. Bob Vila displayed several ways pavers transform an outdoor space. The installation for this project is simple, but it requires a little bit of time. This type of project can typically be done in a weekend, and the results will amaze you.

The first step in this process is to pick out your desired paver or stone. Look for pavers or stones that match your design aesthetic. Once you have a paver or stone design picked out, the next step in laying them out. Pavers are typically rectangular, like bricks, so it is best to line them up in a clean pattern. Stones, on the other hand, have a more organic shape, allowing you to be a bit more creative with placement.

Any type of paver or stone is typically installed using sand. The sand acts as a filler between all of the gaps, allowing you to keep your pavers or stones in place. The outer pavers or stones are glued down in place to keep everything secured. This project is fairly easy to do and just requires a little bit of time and dedication. It will completely cover your ugly cement patio and leave you with a stunning result that you will love for years to come.
