Prepare The Concrete Surface
Start by tidying your outdoor space area, clear it of furniture, flowerpots, and toys then sweep and clean thoroughly to remove any dirt and dust. Cover any plants or landscaping that cant be removed with tarps or cloth to protect them from chemicals and water run-off. Next, scrub the patio surface to remove grease or any type of grime from the concrete. Grease or oil on the surface will bleed through the new paint, interfering with the longevity of the paint and cause it to discolour.
Remove moss, roots, vines and anything else that has grown on the surface of the concrete before cleaning. Its probably worthwhile to rent a pressure-washer to remove the stubborn grime and stains. Alternatively you can mix water and some mild detergent and scrub over the concrete using a broom or scrub brush.
If you have previously painted your patio any old paint can be removed with paint-removing solvent and scrapers. This may take you a while, but it is essential for a beautiful painted finish. If you dont do this, you can end up with bumps and an uneven texture on the surface. Allow for the patio to fully dry before proceeding to the next step.
Even if the patio doesn’t appear to be dirty, clean it anyway. Specs of dirt may not be visible but they can ruin the finish of a new paint job. So basically, the better the patio surface, the better quality of your paintwork.

Prepping Your Outdoor Concrete Patio
Yes, concrete is hardy and can withstand lots of wear and tear over the years. This fact doesnt mean you should slap a coat of paint on it right away.
First, youll want to make sure the concrete is as clean as possible. For newer outdoor concrete patios, you might be able to get away with a good scrub with a solution of TSP and water. Make sure to rinse the patio and let it fully dry after this step. Muriatic acid is often called upon for extremely dirty concrete surfaces.
For older patios or especially dirty surfaces , power washing is the way to go. We strongly recommend bringing in a professional for this project, as the wrong power washing setting and solution can cause more damage to your outdoor concrete patio, or even strip it of its sealant.
Next, fill in and sand any holes and cracks. You might need to remove any old spackling or mortar and refill. This step is where the real elbow grease comes in, since you will want your surface to be as smooth as possible before you apply new sealant or paint. Again, we recommend bringing in the professionals for this type of project, as your prep work can take hoursif not daysto complete on your own.

Tips To Make Your Paint Job Last
As mentioned earlier, making a paint job on an exterior surface such as a porch last is slightly difficult. To make sure it does, follow these tips.
- Follow the manufacturers instructions to a tee. If you are confused, speak to the paint dealer who will give you a better idea about how exactly the paint should be applied.
- Simply sweeping the surface to be painted to remove dust and debris is not enough. It requires a pressure wash before even etching the surface.
- Etch the surface with muriatic acid so that the paint adheres to the surface strongly.
- Add an anti-skid agent to the paint to reduce its slipperiness.
- Allow each coat of paint to dry thoroughly before you apply the next one. Keep pets and people out of the way.
- Follow the temperature guide provided by the manufacturers, which means you may have to wait until the external temperatures are suitable to your requirements.
- Apply a sealer once your paint job is done. Sealing is the final most important step to ensure that your paint lasts. Apply a single, thin coat and allow it to cure for 72 hours. Then apply a top coat and wait for another 72 hours before you place any furniture on it.
How To Paint A Patio
About a third of our already fairly small garden is occupied by a huge concrete slab. Shortly after we moved in in 2017, my dad suggested we could just paint the patio. I did exactly that and, considering I did no prep beyond a quick hose down, it held up pretty well for a few years. However, after some very wet winters, it had started to peel pretty badly and so I decided to have another go, but this time with all the prep.
Although my patio is a single block of concrete, this method can be applied to paving slabs as well. I will be painting our shady patio soon using the same process. I will update the blog once Ive finished that patio.

Painting The Garden Slabs
Painting the slabs in the garden is like painting your floors inside the house. Although this time I used a roller instead of a brush . The whole process is quite straightforward, but you have to remember to at least sweep the slabs before you start to paint. Its also best if you choose a day that isnt very windy, or in fact, not windy at all . Well, I didnt, and so ended up with occasional leaves sticking to my freshly painted slabs. Luckily the paint dries very fast and that did not ruin the whole look.
Now the glitter. At first I wasnt quite sure about it, but because I acted fast I didnt allow myself much time to think. And it actually turned out to be as good as I hoped. The glitter in the paint catches the sun and gives a little sparkle effect almost like they were granite not concrete slabs. Sadly it is only visible in full sun and thats when the camera doesnt really like to cooperate with me nor with my plans .
Can you spot the little dots? That's the glitter!
Other than that the effect is pretty impressive and I couldnt be happier with how it all turned out. And its all for less than £20! I have to warn you though! If youre planning to paint your garden slabs prepare yourself for a backache the next day. But it is so worth it!
Use The Right Patio Paint
Patio paints are made using acrylic, so once it sets it creates a sealed surface. The paint must also be non-slip or you will be falling over once it rains.
So be sure to use the right paint for the right job:
- Must be non-slip
- Acrylic-based paint
Before deciding to paint your patio you might want to try a jet wash service to get it back to its original colour and c ondition.
We have seen many customers who have painted their patio and then decided that it was better before!
Most patio slabs will look much better once pressure washed and an acid cleaner applied. An acid bath will take the top layer or grime away and will result in a more presentable patio.
