How to Install a Patio Door Screen

Ideally, homeowners should choose screens that may be installed on either an in- or out-swinging door. For instance, a retractable screen stays in a narrow housing when itâs not being used. Theyâre nearly invisible, and they stay out of the way for safety. With doors that meet in the midst of the opening, these systems wonât obscure the homeâs French doors nor diminish their benefits.

Exterior French Doors: A Buyers Guide

Looking for the best patio doors? The window-door hybrid has never lookedor performedbetter. Heres how to find the right ones for your house and budget.

Maybe you have a new stone patio and want to open a sunny passageway from the living room. Or youd like to see your garden from the kitchen while also ushering in more light and air.

When the French crossed doors with windows back in the 1600s, they had something similar in mind. Exported to North America a century later, pairs of the multipaned doors could be flung open to catch a breeze in summer while inviting in the sun year-round. In fact, Thomas Jefferson installed several pairs of them at Monticello.

Today, French doors come in a wide variety of styles, from uninterrupted panes of glass to ones crisscrossed with diamond-shaped grids, and they slide as well as swing. New engineering means greater energy efficiency, wind resistance, and security, freeing the mind to focus on what counts: light and air.

One of the nicest things in a room is a splash of sunlight on the floor, says interior designer Mally Skok. Unlike windows, French doors let light in low, and create a sense of always being able to step outside, which is cheering.

Heres how to bring this now very American tradition home.

What Are French Doors

French doors are a type of patio door that are hinged on the side and swings open and closed. Also known as a hinged patio door, French doors got their name after first appearing in France. French patio doors allow an abundance of natural light into your home and typically feature stylish grilles. Theyâre a beautiful addition to rooms with walls of windows.

Another type of French patio door is a four-panel sliding patio door. This type of French patio door has fixed panels on the left and right sides, and the two doors in the middle slide outwards towards the fixed panel. The feeling of a sliding patio door parting in the middle has a similar look and feel to what you might more commonly think of as a French patio door.

How To Adjust Spring Hinges

Swinging Patio Doors With Screens (With images)

The spring hinge come with a long bar and a tiny pin.

1. Install the hinge with the little holes along the bottom.

2. To adjust the hinge, place the long bar in a hole and crank it to your right.

3. Then place the pin inside one of the holes to the left of the bar. The pin will lock the hinge in place.

4. Try out the door. If it is still too loose, crank the long bar to the right some more, and keep moving the tiny pin to the left. This will tighten the hinge.

p.s. I installed both hinges upside down until I figured this out myself dag nab it! And Im sorry to anyone that knows more than I do and my info is incorrect. But it worked. Is there such thing as a wrong right? This would be it.

Add a few cupboard protectors and your doors will thump rather than slam. Super cool!

French Door Makes Popping Noises

I have french doors in my bedroom that go out to the lanai. They “pop” both day and night when the AC goes off and on, when someone opens a door somewhere else in the house, when the sun shines on them, and sometimes for no reason that I can determine.

I can ignore it during the day but the popping wakes me up at night. Do you have any idea how to fix ??? I am becoming sleep deprived !!!

Hi Sue

The most common problem I find with many french doors is that the wooden astragal or stop in the center of the door gets loose and prevents the door from closing tightly.

The slightest wind can then move the doors against the stop and make them click and pop.

With luck the problem is as simple as pushing the astragal back to its original position then adding a screw to keep it from moving again.

Hope this helps

Top and bottom view. Note the door handle sticks out in the center. I have more pictures! The entrance to my home are french doors that open outward onto a deck. The dilemma I have is that I need more ventilation in the room that the doors enter to as there are no windows.

The complicating factor is that I have cats that cannot be outside, so a retractable screen would not be an option as the cats could easily duck under or to the side to exit. I need something more rigid.Note that there is no track on the bottom.Perhaps you could make a recommendation?See the attached picture.Any advise would be much appreciated!!!

Vinyl French patio doors are made with multiple insulating air chambers and optional insulating foam. French doors come with a variety of energy-efficient glass options, which are optimized for your homeâs region and weather. Can A French Door Have Only One Screen

Tutorial: How to Install a Grisham Sliding Patio Screen Door

We recently moved into a newly built home, which has a French patio door. We would like to put a screen on, but were told by our local home improvement store that because there is only a single track versus a double track that it would not work, and that we would have to tear our the door to put in the correct type of track.

Do you have any suggestions as to how we could make some modifications so that we do not have to tear out everything, or for a screen that will work? Thanks!

Hi Caroline

Thanks for the great pictures !

French Doors are often made with a single sliding screen. Yours had one but most likely it got broken and was thrown out.

At the top you either have a channel or a thin rail that the rollers ride on. If its a channel, measure from the highest point. If its a rail, measure from the lowest part of the rail.

Measure down to the top of the bottom rail. If you have a channel at the top, subtract 1/4″ from this height. If you have a rail at the top, add 1/4″ to the height measurement.

The width of the slider is from the back of the vertical post or astragal over to the vertical jamb.

In your door the screen door slides right over top of the astragal so it should have no problem sealing out the bugs.

The cost is $129.00 which includes delivery to Virginia, frame, screen cloth, spline, latch, steel ball bearing rollers and screen installation tool.

About French Patio Doors

Whereas a sliding door glides open and closed, a French patio door features two doors that are hinged on their outer sides. This allows the doors to swing open and closed, thus earning them the name swinging patio doors. French doors can either open inward or outward, depending on the owners preference. Further, theyre most commonly found in homes that feature traditional architectural styles.

French Doors With Sidelights And Transoms

To allow even more light into your home and create design interest, consider adding a sidelight or transom to your French patio door. Sidelights are picture windows that are tall and skinny and are placed next to your patio door. Transoms are picture windows that are long and short and are situated above the patio door.
