How To Remove Old Paint From Wicker Furniture

You should paint or stain your outdoor wicker furniture every few years to keep it looking its best and increase its longevity. Of course, before adding a fresh coat of paint, you will need to remove the old paint. To remove the paint, you can use a small scraper, flathead screwdriver or wire brush. Be gentle, since any bit of roughness can damage the woven material. You can also use a garden hose with a spray nozzle or even a pressure washer if you are particularly careful, but, while these methods are more convenient, they also increase the chance of damaging your favorite wicker chair or sofa. If you do use a wet method, make sure your furniture dries completely before you take any other steps.

Question: Do I Have To Use A Paint Primer Before Painting Wicker Furniture

Patio Furniture Re

Answer: Yes, you really should use a primer first! Be sure to apply at least two coats of oil-base wood primer to the bare spots, or the final paint coat will absorb like crazy, adding to your costs. The use of a primer is especially important if you are changing the color of the piece from dark to light.

Then after the primer dries, apply two light coats of oil-based paint, using either a compressor sprayer, spray can or brush to apply.

Repair And Clean The Wicker Furniture Before Painting

If you need to make any repairs to your woven or rattan furniture do it before moving on to the next step.

Prepare your furniture and save time by cleaning and deglossing at the same time. Remove loose dust and dirt by vacuuming if needed. You may need to use a brush and a hose to rinse if theres a lot of dust build-up.

Next, wipe your chair or item well with Simple Green and a clean cloth. Simple Green will clean and degloss your surface at the same time. Deglossing is a must when painting and gives the new paint a better surface to adhere to and prevent flaking.

Bonus Track: Paint Vs Stain

Before we go any further, lets answer a pretty common question regarding this kind of furniture renovation: Is it better to paint or stain wicker? Lets see.

Paint and stain are very similar, both in their composition as in their final look. What separates them is that while paint ultimately remains as a layer on top of a material, the stain is absorbed by it.

That, for instance, makes stain particularly good for wooden surfaces. Instead of covering wood fibers, it impregnates them, for a rugged finish.

Plus, staining takes less time, because it usually doesnt need a primer.

On the contrary, paint takes a bit longer to shine but it comes in a wider variety of colors. In addition, it can be applied over already painted surfaces, something thats not possible with stain.

If you ask me, the magic of stain gets lost on wicker, due to the size of each individual fiber. Using paint on the wicker will give it a more uniform look.

The Easy Way To Refinish Wooden Patio Furniture

Refinishing Wicker Patio Furniture

As the season winds to a close, you may notice the patio furniture youve been sitting in and lounging on all summer is starting to look a little worse for wear. While well worn furniture is a sign that its also well-loved, caring for it ensures youll get to keep enjoying it for years to come.

Of all the materials used to craft the most popular types of patio furniture, wood furniture is usually the first to show signs of damage from the environment, and regular use. The good news is, you can easily get it looking like new in a few easy steps.

Strip The Finish

The first step to refreshing your patio furniture is to strip the old finish. Working in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, set up your the piece you will be refinishing on a tarp or drop cloth or other cover to protect your work surface from drips, stains, and damage. Secure your cover in place with tape.

Remove any loose paint or finish by going over the entire piece with a paint scraper or by sanding. Take care not to damage the wood by sanding too deeply. Consider switching to a fine-grit sandpaper or sponge to sand around decorative and curved details.

If youre comfortable with chemicals, you can use a chemical stripping agent. Follow the manufacturers instructions of use, but in general, you should apply the remover with a medium-sized plaint brush over the entire surface. Let the solution soak for 20 to 30 minutes, but dont allow it to dry.

Allow Plenty Of Time To Dry Between Coats Of Paint:

  • Spray paint dries fairly quickly and you may be in a rush to apply multiple coats of paint in a short amount of time but its worth the wait.
  • Weather elements like heat, cold, or humidity will affect the adhesion of the spray paint. So, make sure youve given your pieces plenty of time to dry between coats.

How To Revitalize Your Wicker Furniture With Spray Paint

Wicker furniture is rather delicate, since it is made from natural fibers which can easily get mildew and rot. The fibers are also susceptible to the effects of the sun and rain. Even if you keep the furniture indoors, the changes in temperature do affect the life of the fibers. Here is how you can revitalize wicker furniture with spray paint.

Mildew Killer

Clean the surface of the wicker using a vacuum cleaner. You should also use a toothbrush to clean any mildew that may have grown on the furniture. Dip the toothbrush into a solution of mild bleach which kills the mildew once and for all. Similarly, you can use a mildew killer that you can be purchased from your nearby hardware store or any home DIY retail outlet. After this treatment, you should wipe the furniture with a damp cloth, and then let the furniture dry in the sun.

Make sure your rattan wicker furniture is properly dried prior to stripping and re-painting the set

If the wicker chair had been waxed or had some paint, then you should obtain some stripper from the hardware store, and using the spray paint gun, coat the furniture with it. Ask the clerk how much time you should allow the stripper to remain on wicker furniture.

Attention to Detail

Mix the paint that you want, and then spray two coats of paint on the wicker furniture. Make sure that you spray it on all surfaces too. Ensure that the first coat of paint dries well before you add another one.

How To Spray Paint Wicker Furniture

How to Spray Paint Wicker

Were sharing how to spray paint wicker furniture today!

Several years ago, I got a major itch to paint the furniture on our front porch black. Looking back it makes no sense because white is my absolute favorite color and its woven in everything from the clothes I wear to the car I drive.

But at the time, I was really craving a change. I was just too nervous to actually do anything about it.

I worried I would paint the wicker furniture black and hate it or that it wouldnt turn out as I had envisioned.

Has that ever happened to you?

Where a decorating fear had you completely stuck?

Well, around that same time, I was on the phone with one of my clients discussing a room makeover when I heard myself say, Its just paint. If you dont like it dont sweat it paint can be changed.

And as soon as those words left my mouth, I knew it was time to take my own advice.

I spent the next few afternoons spray painting the wicker furniture on the front porch with Rust-Oleum Spray Paint in Canyon Black and somehow the post went viral.

Even now, all these years later, this post continues to be a popular one.

Given were about to enter into the season that is perfect for refreshing our outdoor spaces, I thought it was time for an update.

Question: Do I Have To Get The Old Paint Off

Answer:Yes, the next step is to begin removing all the flaking and chipped paint that you can. Get a soft brass or wire brush and scrape off as much as possible. If its flaking badly, I have also found success using the side of a flat-head screwdriver blade or a house paint scraper tool, but be careful not to damage the wicker strands or weave as you scrape.

Mix Paint And Prepare The Paint Sprayer

Now youre ready to paint.

Which paints are best for painting wicker furniture?

You can use chalk paint, mineral paint, milk paint, latex, or even oil-based paint on wicker, rattan and woven furniture.

If youre using chalk, mineral, or milk paint, it needs to be self-sealing! Self-sealing paint means it does not need a wax or another type of clear top coat to seal it to your furniture item. It should list that it is self-sealing on the label. If youre not sure ask before investing in your paint.

I promise youyou dont want to try to wax wicker furniture by hand!

If you are painting outdoor woven furniture use a high-quality outdoor latex paint. It will last longer, has UV blocking built-in, and be fade resistant.

How to prepare the paint for the paint sprayer.

First, youll need to mix the paint to the proper consistency. I slowly added water until my paint was the consistency of thin pancake batter. I used about three cups of paint to paint my wicker armchair.

Tip: Add some water to the bottom of the paint container first before adding paint and the paint will mix better and quicker.

My HomerRight Super Finish Max comes with four tips for different types of paint. I used the green tip for this project. Use a piece of cardboard to test the paint flow and spray pattern. Its easy to adjust the spray flow on the Finish Max Extra with the little dial thats located on the handle.

How To Weatherproof Wicker Furniture

The best way to protect your wicker garden furniture from the elements is to store it inside during wet weather. The second-best way is to use well-fitting furniture covers whenever your furniture is not in use.

You can also choose outdoor paint that will help protect it or follow up your paint with a couple of coats of marine varnish or outdoor furniture sealer. Follow the manufacturers instructions and be sure to let the pieces dry completely between coats and before use.

If you prefer the look of unpainted wicker furniture, you can skip the paint and just use two to three coats of marine varnish or outdoor furniture sealer to provide protection from the elements.

Alternatively, you can apply tung oil or boiled linseed oil to unpainted wicker furniture to help preserve its look. This will not protect it from major rain events or spraying it with a pressure washer or a garden hose, but it will make it more water resistant than it would be if left untreated.
