Some Ideas for Do It Yourself Patio Covers

Attaching the cover of your patio on the roof of your house can be arduous and harmful. If the structure of the roof is not strong enough, it cannot support the cover.

Unlike the ones that rely on the roof of a house, a freestanding patio is stronger and safer because it is supported by four posts that do not rely on any other buildings.

    How To Pour Concrete Patio

    1) Mix the concrete. This can be done manually or with a mixer. Always follow the directions on the concrete bags. 2) Pour the concrete. Do this all at once to prevent self-sliding and sagging of the panels. 3) Use a shovel to push the concrete to all corners. Concrete is heavy, so put it in the right place. 4) Use a flat wooden or aluminum ruler to level the top of the concrete. 5) Level the concrete surface with a slider. Move the float back and forth to flatten the deck and fill in the gaps. 6) Apply the finishing touch. Insert these with an edger between the formwork and the concrete to create a rounded edge. 7) Allow the concrete to cure for at least two days. Cover the concrete with plastic or hardener to keep it moist.

Designing your own patio is both fun and time consuming – you have lots of factors to consider, lots of materials to prepare, and lots of things to be done. But no matter how big or small your soon-to-be patio is everything starts with a good design plan.

So, before you start digging and buying materials for your patio, get a paper, sit down and draw a patio design plan.

    Where to begin?

Most people encounter trouble in creating a plan they like mainly because they lack the necessary skill and artistry. If you are one of them, start by getting some ideas online or from your neighbor’s backyard. You can also find useful ideas on home improvement magazines and books. Most of them contain illustration, step-by-step procedure, and the list of materials needed to create the exact plan. This makes it easier for you to complete the project in case you decide to adapt a specific plan.

What are the elements that must be present to the plan?

Focal point. Focal point ranges from garden pieces such as trellises, birdbaths fountains, artificial lakes, little pool, and statues to colorful flowers and plants depending on the available space for your patio. Choose your focal point in line with the overall theme you want to achieve.

Furniture. Select the furniture for your patio depending on the available space and the how the space will be used. Your patio design plan should include where the furniture will be placed on the area.

So lets start from the beginning with the design. My husband wanted the biggest deepest patio we could get with unobstructed views. Our current patio was 30 long and that length was good so that we didnt cover the windows to two of our bedrooms. Our house is already on the darker side and we wanted to keep as much natural light inside as possible. So we knew 30 long, but how were we going to that big of a span without posts in the middle? I didnt think it was possible, but my husband wouldnt give up on it. So I went and talked to an architect friend and he said it would be possible with an 18 glulam. He also suggested adding another set of posts close to the outside that wouldnt block any views but would help balance the look. I totally agreed and is one of our favorite features. He also said we could get away with smaller joists, but because we were leaving them exposed, I went with 3x8s to again balance the look. As far as the depth, we settled on 14 so that we could use standard 16 joists rather than having to up the joist size to 20 and then cut them down to size.

Next up was #DemoDay! It was sure nice to see the old patio go down and that meant things were getting real! I did salvage the wood and made a dining table for the new patio. If you havent seen that build, you can check it out here. It is a real conversation piece when I tell people what I made it from.

Then lastly some paint, lighting fixtures and the patio was ready to be enjoyed.

Diy Patio Cover Size & Cost

The patio area to be covered is fairly large, 24X12, so spanning it became the major obstacle. The two choices were to run 12 beams and then get 24 engineered trusses to cover the span, or run 24 beams and run 12 2X8s to span the 10 gap. If we had chosen the former, we would have gone with a gabled ceiling trimmed out with tongue and groove cedar, and covered with asphalt shingles.

In the end, the cost differential was substantial enough that the latter was a better choice. The final cost including all the finishing materials was just under $2000.

Diy: Turning A Concrete Slab Into A Covered Deck

Ever thought about turning your concrete slab into a covered deck? Its definitely doable! Here are some thoughts, tips, & photos from our experience!

Well, this post has been a long time coming. We completed our wood deck covering for the front of the house back in the spring of 2017, and published that post at the same time I actually started this project, which was a much larger undertaking! Shockingly to me, that post about turning a cement porch into a wood deck has become one of the most popular posts here at Catz, and Ive had a number of people ask for this post about the back deck. My plan was to publish it last summer, but it ended up being a surprisingly busy season for us, so here I am shooting for this spring!

An idea began to develop, and after sketching it out and doing some research, we decided it was plausible a peaked, 12-foot, clear roof to cover the new deck. It was certainly going to be a little more complicated than a straight, slanted roof, but we thought the potential benefits were worth it. At 12 feet, it would be high enough in the center to feel open and airy, while the clear roofing would let lots of light through during the many, many gray days here in the Pacific Northwest. That was the idea anyway
