Make The Patio Roof A Little Bit Higher

How to attach a patio or verandah to a house

It is almost similar to the first method, but to make the patio roof a little bit higher, you will need to remove the house gutter and place the back channel a bit higher.

Because the gutter is removed, you will need to install transfer flashing from the roof of the house to the patio. It allows you to add over a hundred millimeters of extra height.

Vertical End Beam And Rafters Checked For Level

Attach the Rafters

Attach 2×6 rafters to the house with joist hangers and/or supported by the ledger board. If necessary, use a sliding bevel to determine angles needed where the rafters will meet the ledger board. Rafters are placed on 24″ centers, and attached to the beams and settle joists are attached as needed . The rafters should be added from each end working toward the center. Check each rafter for level as they are installed. Attach to ledger first, then settle joists. The vertical end beam is checked for level as the end rafters are positioned and secured. If the rafters extend over a beam, do not extend more than 1/3 of overall rafter length.

A Green Option: Shade With Trees And Plants

Large planters with trees provide shade and bring greenery onto the deck. Evergreens are a good choice. They look and smell nice, and grow tall enough to provide shade . When filled with soil, these planters tend to be heavy. Limit the size to what you can move around. Set planters along the edge of the deck to serve as a sun screen. In cold climates, trees may not survive winter in a planterask before you buy.

For even more shade, plant trees in the ground around the deck. Maple trees are one good choice because they have dense foliage for blocking the sun and are fast-growing, so you won’t have to wait 20 to 30 years to reap the benefits. Ask about other choices at a local nursery. In many ways, trees are the best shade system because they can shade large areas, provide privacy and beautify your yard. The downside is you have to wait several years for results.

Fastening To Masonry Walls

DIY Patio Roof Build

Anchor a ledger to a masonry wall with expanding anchor bolts. Begin by marking a line across the wall for the ledgers top edge. Drill holes for the expanding anchors every 16 inches or as specified by local codes, insert the anchors, hold the ledger in place, and tap it with a hammer to indent the anchor locations on its back face.

Remove the ledger, and drill bolt holes where the bolt tips have left marks. Push or hammer the ledger back onto the bolts, recheck for level , add washers and nuts, and then tighten the bolts.

Planning Your Patio Cover

When designing a patio cover, it can help to make a drawing of cover including the house and the patio itself. SketchUp or other designing software can be helpful in your planning, but in lieu of those aids, scale drawings on graph paper will work just fine. For our purposes we will design a cover that is 12 ft. wide by 16 ft. long.

Start by measuring from grade or ground next to the foundation up to the underside of the eaves. Next measure out to the fascia or vertical finish of the eaves. Determining the roof pitch completes this part of the drawing. The simplest way to hold one end of a 2-ft. level against the roof, and then measuring straight down to the roofing material. Divide that number by two and that gives you the pitch, or the amount of vertical rise in the roof per foot of run. Transfer those calculations to your drawing.

Next measure out from the house to the edge of the patio. Most often the grade slope away from the house slightly for drainage. .

Ditch The Splash While Maintaining The Air Flow

The main goal of installing a patio roof is because you want to enjoy hanging out in your patio despite the weather. However, in some cases, you will not only block the splash but also the airflow.

To prevent it from happening, you need to place the patio sheeting about 300 millimeters over the top of the roof. This technique allows the patio roof to perform a shield from the rain without blocking the airflow.

Building The Patio Cover

I realized, too late, of course, that I didnt take a good before picture for this project, but the above step 1 shot will do the trick, I think. You can clearly see the concrete pad we had to work with it measures about 12 feet deep , and about 24 feet long. It was also slanted, in order to guide water away from the house, but I did not realize;how slanted it was! Chels said she had always noticed the dramatic slant , but upon measuring it, I found it dropped a full;four inches from the house to the grass! Four inches over twelve feet was much more than I bargained for when I was drawing this project up on my notepad, and I knew that compensating for it was going to be a fair amount of work

The first part was relatively simple. Before erecting the 4×4s, I cut the ones closest to the house down about four inches so that the tops of the posts would be level front to back. I attached plastic post anchors to the bottoms of the 4×4s, and then secured the plastic post anchors to to the concrete using my hammer drill and nail-in concrete anchors. The plastic posts do a couple of things for you first, they make it easy to mount, erect, straighten, and level the 4×4 posts. Secondly, they keep the post itself elevated off the concrete just slightly, so the post base will never be sitting in water as time goes on.;

Supplies:

  • Corrugated roof panels we used 8x 26 wide panels at 12 lengths from Home Depot
  • Horizontal plastic closure strips, packs of 6 we used 8 packs of 6 to cover our 4 roof supports at 16 long each support
  • 2×2 wood roof supports we used 8x 8 lengths, but you could use 4x 16 lengths, or whatever length you need for your project to at least create 4 roof supports across the top
  • 1.5 Decking screws
  • 1.5 Fastener Screws

Install The Support Posts

You can place the columns outside the porch area or install them on the porch deck. In the former case, youll have to dig holes in the ground and fix the support posts into these holes using concrete. In the latter case, you will have to anchor the columns to the beams located under the deck. For the patio, you have to attach the columns to the concrete using special fasteners.

Tools:

  • It took us 1 1/2 gallons to paint 2 coats on the patio pergola.
  • Installing the Posts

We knew we were going to adding a pergola to our patio before we had the concrete poured. To give our pergola footings a strong grip, the concrete guys dug out where the posts were going to be so the concrete was deeper in those areas.

Then when we installed the post bases, the bolts used to hold them wouldnt be longer than the cement was deep for a nice strong hold. This step is not necessary, but if you can, it doesnt hurt.

To install the post bases, we drilled a 1/2 hole in the concrete with a 6 masonry bit. The hole was about 4 1/2 deep.

Then we placed the base over the top and using a hammer, tapped in the wedge anchor. And we tightened it down with a wrench. Now we were ready for posts.

I thought it would be easier to paint all the boards for the pergola before we built it, then I could just add the final coat once it was built.

Well, because of the rain, I only managed to get a few boards painted. So you will notice some boards are white, but most are not. No worries, we remedied that when the sun finally decided to shine again.

We attached the 4×4 posts to the post base. Then cut 2×4 boards to flank either side of the posts. These are for a bit more stabilization and to support the weight of the 2×8 beams to make installing them easier.
