Five Window Covering Solutions For Your Sliding Door

Unique Patio Doors and Privacy Windows — Guardian Windows

Sliding doors are great to have in any home, giving you easy access to the outdoors and allowing in natural light and fresh air. Some doors are a separate interior feature by themselves, enhancing the overall home design while others provide a stunning background in the form of a breathtaking view of the natural beauty outside. Moreover, all sliding doors, with their huge size and width, enhance the spaciousness of any room, making them a popular choice for any space, be it the living room, kitchen, patio, or any outdoor enclosure. Aren’t they simply a delight for homeowners?

Well, unfortunately not always, unless they’re covered with the right solution. Due to its large size and location, a sliding door can be difficult to cover with a window treatment. Leaving your door bare is fine, but that can cause issues like too much sunlight which can cause damage to your belongings. If you have a sliding door in your bedroom any unwanted light can interrupt your sleep. Another issue of not having your door covered is the lack of privacy.

Patio Privacy Ideas To Keep Your Neighbors Guessing

If you are fortunate enough to have a patio to relax on, you can understand why it is so important to have some privacy as well. We use our patios as a personal escape from the worries of the world around us. Whether laying out in the sun, sitting by a fire, cooking a couple “dogs” on the grill, or entertaining a group in the pool, it is always easier to relax and make the best of your “escape” when you know the cranky old neighbor isn’t peering at you from afar.

Some type of barrier between you and that neighbor is nearly essential. But how do we achieve this privacy? We obviously want to keep it classy, it’s 2015, and Huck Finn isn’t around to paint any fences for us anymore. So you may be wondering, “What is a creative way for me to shield myself from nosy neighbors, without turning my backyard into a boxed up cell?”. If so, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are some interesting and creative ways to keep your patio private, while also sending a message that says, “Hey, what’s going on in here is most likely awesome”. Check out these examples and decide for yourself what would work best for your backyard!

Budget Blinds Covering Solutions For Sliding Doors

If you are looking for a resolution to all these challenges that are typical of a bare sliding door, let Budget Blinds® offer you five solutions to covering it. But before we deep-dive into the solutions, let’s deep-dive into some of the problems of uncovered sliding doors, which our covering solutions like sliding door blinds and shutters for sliding glass and patio doors can help resolve.

Exposure to Sunlight– While it’s extremely pleasant to allow natural light in, bare sliding doors don’t just allow light in; they also provide unnecessary and excessive exposure to harsh sunlight and heat, especially in the afternoons, when the mercury typically rises. At such times, what if you want to allow in natural light but at the same time want to block the harmful UV rays that can be damaging to you and your furniture?

Lack of Privacy –Sliding glass doors are a popular feature and for good reason but they don’t provide privacy unless you fit these doors with the right solutions. Imagine that you’re enjoying a family dinner during which you want privacy but also want to allow in some natural light for a soft glowing ambience. It’s unlikely that you can have privacy and diffused light with bare sliding doors!

Control the Level of Privacy Required –Again depending on your privacy requirements, you can open or close the slats to the desired extent.

Window Treatments To Avoid For Sliding Glass Doors

We do not recommend using horizontal blinds for sliding glass doors. This includes wood blinds, faux wood blinds and mini blinds. It is possible to install them, but be aware of these potential concerns.

Horizontal blinds will be extremely heavy spanning a wide width like a sliding glass door. Lifting them frequently could put undue stress on cords and cause them to eventually break. Cords could be as long as 10-12 feet and look unsightly when puddled on the ground . Horizontal products can also be easily damaged by pets trying to slip behind to see out the door.

Wood Blinds, Faux Wood Blinds, Roman Shades and Woven Wood Shades have a large “stack”. This is the vertical space at the top of your window that the blinds slats take up when fully raised. Unless you order with extra height, they may cover the top of the door opening when fully raised, forcing tall guests to duck when going in and out.

Roller shades, sheer shades, and cellular shades have a smaller stack and are an acceptable option when mounted on the wall above the window opening. However, consider having to fully raise all of the shades above the window every time you want to open the door. If you don’t want the hassle, choose one of the products mentioned above that slide left-to-right.

In Australia, the indoor-outdoor lifestyle is very popular and a common way to connect the two spaces, is with large glass doors. Ways And 23 Ideas To Cover French Door Windows

A French door is a door, usually one of a pair, with glass panes that extend for most of its length. Sometimes we need some privacy and those glass panes prevent us from getting it, so you need to treat these panes somehow. Today I’d like to share a couple of ideas how to do that with style.

Actually, French doorwindow treatment is almost the same as with usual windows: curtains, blinds and both. Let’s consider each of them.

Corded Cordless Or Motorized Blinds And Shades

Some parents and pet owners worry about the long cords that come with some types of curtains, blinds and shades, but this doesn’t have to be an area of concern. The Home Depot offers plenty of cordless and motorized options that are a safer choice for homes with children and pets.

Consider whether motorized blinds, shades and shutters, adjustable via remote control, are more to your liking than manual options. Or, if you’re looking to integrate your blinds into your smart-home setup, consider new “smart” blinds that can be controlled, even programmed, from your smartphone!

Does It Matter Which Way You Turn Your Blinds

Usually, this is a personal preference. However, if you want more privacy, it is suggested to turn them up so that people outside cannot see in. You also have better light control when they are up. In the winter keep the blind’s rounded side out. This allows heat to come in from the sun. In the summer, do the opposite to allow heat to disperse.

For Your Patio: French Door & Patio Door Solutions

When choosing window treatments, there are several vital considerations that will help determine which sliding door window treatment is best for your space and will fit in with the overall feel of your home. The benefits of slider doors make choosing the perfect window treatment for sliding doors a potentially tricky process.

Here are some tips to remember to help you choose the right window treatment for your sliding glass door.

1. Match your Existing Window Treatments

First, if your sliding glass patio doors are in the same room with other windows, then be sure to coordinate your window treatments. It will look best if all your window treatment match.

2. Open in the Same Direction as the Door

Next, I always recommend that your window treatments operate in the same direction as your sliding glass doors. Meaning that if your door opens from left to right, then your curtains should also open that way. This obviously depends on the type of treatment you choose and rules are meant to be broken.

3. Think About Durability

The last tip, sliding glass doors are usually highly-traveled areas. So you’ll want to choose window treatments that will stand up over time. Don’t buy some cheap hanging plastic blinds, they easily crack and break with daily use of the sliding doors.

4. Think about Light Control

5. Think about Easy Access

6. Think about your View versus your Privacy

Some Things To Keep In Mind Before You Buy

– No matter which window treatment you choose, you will probably have to mount it on the wall space above the frame of your sliding glass doors. Look at how much space is available above your doors and make that one of your considerations as you explore options.

– Window treatments for sliding glass doors tend to move by wand, chain, looped pull cord, or a motorized system. If you have a preference, look for that as you consider your choices.

– How do you want the finished window treatment to stack: completely to the left or right? Parting from the middle and moving to either side? Your options depend upon your choice of treatment, of course, but it’s good to have an idea in mind before you start your search.

Sliding Glass Door Blinds Considerations:

  • Specialty window treatments will be more expensive, so you want to get it right the first time. We recommend getting free help from a  when placing your order.
  • Almost all blinds for doors will need to be installed as an outside mount. Most doors don’t have enough depth, so you’ll have to install the window treatment on the wall above.
  • Consider how your door handle may interfere with your window treatment. Your designer can help find an option that will extend far enough not to hit it.
  • If you want your door fully uncovered at times, work with your designer to add extra width so your treatment can be retracted and overlap the wall.

Window Treatments For Sliding Patio Doors

Finding the right option for your patio doors

Teri

Sliding patio doors are notoriously difficult when it comes to window treatments.  Clients ask me for new options all the time and, thankfully, there are several window treatment options that will help you control the light and privacy at your sliding patio door.

Sliding patio doors are challenging because, unlike French doors or other swinging doors, a blind or shade cannot be installed directly to the door panel.  Instead, the shade must be installed either above or to the side of the door to allow the door to operate properly.  This does limit the number of options for window treatments, but the options have grown in the past several years.

When most folks think about adding a blind or shade to their sliding patio door, they immediately think “vertical blinds.”  Unfortunately, these same folks also think “yuck!”  Vertical blinds, while they do control light and offer privacy at a patio door, are not everyone’s favorite window treatment option.  They can be noisy and unattractive, but there are newer vertical blinds on the market that give homeowners stylish options to choose from.
