How to Build a Patio – An easy Do it Yourself Project

I’m a low income single mother who is wanting to build a patio for our home. I’m not sure what would be my cheapest yet stable way to do this. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that pea gravel is good and then others say that concrete is my cheapest way. Its going to be a patio about the 10 x 15 so I can really use some advice

  • Dig Out The Area And Compact The Base

The patio foundation is important for the stability of the pavers. A solid base will reduce shifting and sinking.

    A. Make a bed for your foundation by digging out 6 inches below your lines. Dig an extra 4 inches around the perimeter of your patio because you will need room for the edging. Shovel half the aggregate in, and spread it out evenly with a metal landscape rake.

    B. Compact this first layer, and repeat with the rest of the aggregate. If you want to do this by hand, use a hand tamper. If you want to make it easier on yourself and get really solid pack, use a plate compactor; you can rent one for about $75 a day.

    C. Check the depth as you compact by measuring down from your line to the base. You want 3 inches from the line to the base of compacted aggregate. After the base is evenly packed, you can remove the big plus-sign lines.

  • Visit your local home improvement center to buy paving stones. Paving stones come in a large variety of shapes and colors. The staff at the center can help you decide how many you need, depending on the measurements you have provided them. You will also need to purchase sand as a filler and some crushed stone or pea gravel as a base. Staff at the store can advise you on quantities, but it is always best to buy a little extra.
  • Dig out the area! You must dig to the depth of the pavers plus the sand and the base filler . It is best to go just a little deeper than your estimate; you can always level it off with the fillers. Dig out allowing for one inch of sand and crushed stone + the depth of your stone paver.

Building a paver patio does not take a lot of skill. However, you will be much better off starting out with a simple design pattern like the jack-on-jack or running bond.

More advanced patterns, like say the herringbone or pinwheel might need you to cut the stones. And that requires a little more skill and specialized tools.

Snapping chalk lines directly in the sand is the best way to keep your bricks running straight. Mark the rough center and snap a line at right angles using this method:

  • Measure out an equal distance from the center and make two more marks .
  • Cross two tapes at the same measurement .
  • Snap a chalk line from point D through point A.
  • Then snap a second line half the width of a brick from the first line.
