    • Ebbjdl on May 27, 2018I think this is too much work, why not cover it in fabric with pins or safety pins. Find some nylon fabric that will hold up to the weather. Start at one rib at a time, this seems easier, that’s what I did, because my umbrella wàs faded also.

You will need to squeeze out the excess water first, then hang it where it can dry without staining other surfaces with the dripping dyed water.

Gently remove the ribs from the sleeves of the existing canopy. Be careful not to bend the ribs to the point of breaking them! The first rib will be the most difficult, and once you have a couple of ribs off, the rest of the canopy should be easy to remove. You may want a second person to help with this step.

    Find Out Canvas Diameter

One of the easiest ways to know your umbrella diameter is by checking it online on the store. If you can find the listing of your umbrella, you will be able to find the diameter on the description. However when you cant find it, you can always measure it yourself.

Use a measuring tape, and start from the tip of one of the ribs to the center of the umbrella. Double the result, and you already have the first measurement. Considering that the umbrella is curving, it will be best to add some more on the result so it fits.

Check The Fit And Adjust If Necessary

Open and Close the Umbrella, and see how the new umbrella cover replacement looks on your frame. If it is too small, obviously you shouldnt try to open the umbrella all the way, as it will rip. Return it, measure again, and order a different size.

If it is a bit too big, you can consider picking up some Rubber Leg Tips from your local home improvement store, which will fit over the ends of the umbrella ribs and add a bit of distance to the ribs. These tips will extend the overall length of the umbrella a bit and may make it tauter.

If the size is way too big, return and get a different umbrella canvas.

Determine The Diameter Of Your Umbrella Canvas

If you can find the listing for your umbrella online, you will see how large the canopy is. Patio umbrella sizes may vary from 6 to 13 in diameter. If you cant find the listing for your umbrella online, grab a tape measure and measure from the tip one of the umbrella ribs to the center umbrella pole. Double that distance, and you will have the umbrella canopy diameter.

Remember, an umbrella is not a flat plane, but rather is curved with the ribs on the bottom. Consequently, the canvas will actually be a little bit larger than this diameter measurement. Most umbrella replacement covers dont supply an exact fit but will be close. They are generally broken down in 1 increments .

    How To Measure Patio Umbrellas

First, open your umbrella and make certain its completely extended. Then measure from the top of the patio umbrella along one of the ribs or arms that extent from the center hub. Measure that distance from the center hub to end of the rib or arm. Then simply multiply that number by 2, that is the size of your umbrella.

For example, if your umbrella has ribs that are 5 feet long, then you have a 10 foot patio umbrella. Remember patio umbrellas are measured by canopy width not overall height.

Another important measurement to know is the Crank Height.

This measurement is called the crank height. You may need to know this if you are buying an umbrella for a taller table, like a bar height table.

The Crank Height is the distance from the base of the umbrella pole to the cranking mechanism, if it has one. The beautiful patio umbrella featured in our graphic, is the BambrellaLevante Center Pole, it doesnt not have a crank, but many center pole umbrellas from our Galtech collection do, so the Crank Height can be an important measurement. Why? Well consider if you are going to be using your umbrellas in a table, the height of your table needs to be shorter than your Crank Height.

How To Measure An Umbrella Size

Whether you are buying an umbrella in the department store or ordering a customized umbrella from a manufacturer, you should know how to determine the umbrella measurement. Here are the two important factors in determining the umbrella measurement:

Umbrella Canopy Size The size of the canopy determines the area that an umbrella can cover. It can be measured by referring to the arc width or diameter. To get the arc size, open the umbrella then measure from one tip of one side then over the top to the tip of the other side.

On the other hand, to get the diameter, open the umbrella then measure from one tip then move to the tip on the other side under the umbrella. Before buying or ordering umbrellas, research whether the brand that you will buy uses arc or diameter for umbrella measurement.

Umbrella Frame Size The frame is composed of the shaft and the handle. To get the frame size, close the umbrella then measure from the top until the handle. The frame size determines the length of the overall umbrella measurement.

If you have a foldable umbrella, you will have two sizes: first when it is folded and second when it is stretched out.

If you are buying customized umbrellas, you have the prerogative to determine the umbrella measurement. The measurement would most likely be determined by the type of umbrella. Here is the common umbrella measurement for each type:
