These machines are invaluable for cleaning large surfaces, such as a concrete patio or the facade of a building.

Cleaning Your Concrete Patio

If you’re looking for a relatively safe and environmentally-friendly chemical for cleaning your concrete patio, try oxygen bleach, such as OxiClean. One option is to sprinkle this versatile powder over the patio. Scrub at stains using a push broom, then let the bleach sit there for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off.

Alternatively, combine two scoops of the bleach with two tablespoons of water to make a thick paste with the consistency of peanut butter. Leave the paste sitting on stubborn stains for one hour before scrubbing it away with a brush.

Another option is to dilute oxygen bleach following the instructions on the package, and then to spray the mixture over your patio, remembering to rinse it away after a few minutes. Any of these oxygen bleach uses help you return your patio to a clean state.

Will Paint Thinner Remove Oil Stains From Concrete

Paint thinner is normally put together with oil-based paint to make it light and getable to apply. Minera spirits, white spirits, turpentine, toluene, or xylene are the paint thinners normally used.

Besides diluting paint, it can also be used for removing the stain, ink, glue, grease, or wax from concrete, cement, brick, or stone. So, don’t worry if you accidentally spilled some paint on your driveway or patio, some paint thinner will save the place.

How to Apply Paint Thinner for Wood Stain Removal:

It’s a very easy process to go for. Pour some paint thinner on the paint stain and sprinkle some absorbent like baby powder. Let them stay like that for at least a day and clean the surface. Hopefully, you will find no stain onwards. Repeat the process again if needed until the stain has vanished.

For oil-based paints, paint thinner is alright but what to do if it’s latex paint? Well, you have to use normal soap and hot water for this kind of paint instead of paint thinner. You cannot use the thinner here. Working with this material is risky as it’s highly flammable and hazardous. Working in an open place carefully is needed.

How To Remove Leaf Stains From A Concrete Walkway

Bio

Q: I found your Dec. 3 advice about removing rust stains from concrete pavers to be quite interesting. I have a problem with stains on concrete, though not from rust. We recently put down a concrete walkway in front of our house. As the leaves fell, especially in the rain, they got stuck to the pavement and left unsightly brown stains. We have tried hosing, bleaching and scrubbing, but we can’t remove the stains. Do you have any suggestions?

Rockville

A: The leaf stains are caused by tannins, the same type of compounds that are found in grapes and make wine taste “dry.” Tannin stains on outdoor concrete often go away on their own, thanks to the powerful bleaching action of the sun. But if you don’t want to wait, try using OxiClean — the basic product, labeled Versatile Stain Remover. It’s carried by most hardware stores; at Lowe’s, an 80-ounce tub costs $10.98.

The active ingredient in OxiClean is sodium percarbonate, a powder that, when mixed with water, releases hydrogen peroxide and soda ash. They are the actual cleaners, assisted by the bubbling action of the hydrogen peroxide.

Although pictures on some OxiClean packages show what appear to be bare hands at work, wear rubber gloves and take care so you don’t get any powder or cleaning solution in your eyes.

If your efforts don’t succeed, you may want to call a pro who installs and repairs marble countertops.

What To Do If The Stain Is On Pavers Or Driveway

Using chemicals on your driveway and pavers can be harmful to the grass and plants around the area. So, is there any solution? Of course, there is. Before the stain treating process, soak the plants and the lawn with water for about half an hour. Once they are filled with water, there will be no space for the chemicals to go in.

Anyway, don’t take any risk as some plants may be very sensitive. Try to wash the whole place after the treatment also.

For Cleaning Oil From Plain Trowelled Concrete:

Here are some tips we’ve picked up from elsewhere for cleaning concrete. These methods should not be used on coloured, or imprinted concrete, or on concrete pavers, or tarmacadam.

  • Mix 1 measure of trisodium phosphate with 6 measures of water. Daub this over the stain with a clean, old paintbrush and allow the goo to dry completely before scraping off the dried paste, which should, hopefully, bring most of the oil with it. Rinse the concrete surface and scrub vigorously with a stiff brush and clean water.
  • Prepare a solution of 5% sodium hydroxide . Daub it over the oil stain using an old paintbrush and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours. Rinse and scrub with clean water, then repeat as required.
  • Paint white spirit or turps over the stain. Let the solvent evaporate for at least one hour before rinsing with hot, soapy water. Repeat as required.

Cleaning Concrete: What Products Should You Use

Todd Morris

Wouldn’t it be nice if your concrete driveway could always look as good as it did when it was installed? As careful as you are, stains and spills are bound to happen and ruin the appearance of your concrete surface. Luckily, there are many ways to remove stains and keep your concrete looking good. In fact, many concrete cleaning projects are things most property owners already have on hand.

Below you’ll find a list of products commonly used to clean up fresh spills and set stains, along with instructions on what you should do prior to the cleaning.

Use Trisodium Phosphate To Clean Concrete Patio

If you are looking for a heavy-duty cleaner for your concrete patio, you should take TSP into your consideration.

TSP, also known as trisodium phosphate, is renowned for being a strong cleaner. It is odorless and colorless. Besides, it does not contain any bleach nor ammonia.

How to clean concrete patio without pressure washer, but using TSP, instead?

Trisodium phosphate comes in the form of dry powder. Therefore, you have to mix ½ cup of TSP with 2 gallons of hot water in a few minutes until you get a mostly clear solution. It will be slightly cloudy, though.

Once you get the cleaning solution, soak a sponge in it and squeeze the excess water from it. Make sure it is rather damp and begin to clean the stain from the bottom upward.

You need to move it in broad strokes for a better result. Repeat the steps several times. If the stains do not come off, you can try applying TSP with a nylon-bristled scrub brush.

To avoid any white spots on the surface of your concrete patio, try rinsing the cleaned area using warm water. Use a new sponge and a new bucket to do it.

Those were the steps on how to clean concrete patio without pressure washer.

How To Clean A Cement Patio Using Muriatic Acid

If none of the other cleaning solutions have been successful, consider using muriatic acid powder. However, it’s important to note that contact with this strong chemical can cause skin burns or damage to your eyes, lungs, and nose lining.

If you do use muriatic acid to remove mineral deposits or mold from your concrete patio, make sure to wear protective gear, including goggles and a face mask. Muriatic acid is readily available at many home improvement and big-box stores.

To prepare your cleaning solution, carefully pour one part muriatic acid into four parts hot water and stir to combine. Pour the acid over your patio and let it sit there for about ten minutes, making sure to rinse away the acid before it dries. Finish by sprinkling baking soda to neutralize any remaining acid.

How to Remove Rust Stains from Concrete

I’ve heard pressure washers are a great way to clean concrete but I don’t have one and didn’t want to go buy one just for this. I did figure out how to clean concrete without a pressure washer though!

I recommend following the process above of scrubbing the concrete with a cleaner, then rinsing. To create a more pressurized rinse using a hose, you can either use the jet setting on your hose’s nozzle . If you don’t have a nozzle, just use your thumb to direct the spray forcefully.

Remove Mold From A Concrete Patio Using Bleach

If you’re wondering how to remove that icky mold from your concrete patio, bleach diluted in hot water is the way to go. Cleaning concrete is easy using this powerful household disinfectant.

Be sure to wear rubber gloves when combining one cup of bleach with one gallon of water. Rub away the mold and mildew using a soft scrub brush, and rinse away the cleaning solution with your garden hose.

As an alternative, combine bleach and water in the same proportion but add 1/8 cup of dish soap. Using a spray bottle, squirt the mixture onto your patio. Let it sit there for a few minutes, and then use a stiff brush to work the cleaner into the concrete.

Use Carbonated Drinks To Clean Concrete Patio

Did you know that carbonated drinks could be superb on how to clean concrete patio without pressure washer?

Although doctors say that soda is bad for your health, apparently it can be an excellent cleaner for your concrete patio. It happens because those beverages contain acidity.

So, how to clean concrete patio without pressure washer, but you use soda, instead? It is easy.

All you need to do is just grabbing your favorite soda, preferably the one containing citric acid. Spill that beverage over the stain, and then leave it for half an hour. After that, scrub and wash it.

Any acid-based cleaner is not a good idea for natural stone and should only be used as a last resort. Firstly try getting rid of the cement/stain with a pressure washer . If it is only a small area use 60grid sandpaper and carefully sand it out. The last resort: Diluted brick acid my stain the stone, and may cause rust stains as natural stone have traces of metals in it. It can also eat away the natural stone. In short, I will never put any acid-based product on a natural stone surface.

How Can I Remove Rust Stains From Concrete

It wasn’t particularly easy but it wasn’t difficult either – it just took a little elbow grease.

I did this while 5 months pregnant on a hot sunny day – so you can definitely do it too!

The biggest determinate of how hard it is to get rust off of your concrete is going to depend on how long the stain has been there.

So, as soon as you notice a stain appear, try to treat it! The longer it sits, the harder it is to remove.

What we are going to do is scrub the rust off as much as possible, and then use lemon juice or vinegar – which are both acidic – to help remove any remaining stains from your concrete floor.

You can use a pressure washer, too. But I didn’t need one for this tutorial!

This would also work to remove rust from driveway. Anywhere you have a rust stain on concrete, here’s how to remove it!

How To Clean A Cement Patio Using Vinegar

To tackle more stubborn stains, including rust stains and for removing paint from concrete, combine equal parts white vinegar and water. Let the mixture sit for ten minutes on the stains, and then clean the stained areas with a soft bristle brush. If, after rinsing, the stains have not disappeared, try scrubbing your patio with undiluted vinegar.

While you’ve already got the supplies out, did you know that you can also clean patio furniture with vinegar? For example, plastic furniture benefits from a combination of white vinegar and water.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide For Cleaning Cement

Hydrogen peroxide is available at some pharmacies, big-box stores, and home improvement stores. It’s a relatively mild disinfectant and cleaner, although it can still cause skin irritation, so be sure to wear gloves.

If possible, replace the screw cap on your bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a spray nozzle so that it’s easy to spray the chemical across your patio, focusing mainly on dirtier sections.

If you like, spray vinegar on top of the hydrogen peroxide to clean even more effectively. In any case, scrub with a nonmetallic brush to get rid of those tough stains that just don’t want to go away.

How To Remove Grease Stains From Concrete

Concrete is one of the most stable and preferred forms of flooring in most outdoor locations. Whether it is your driveway, patio or garage space, concrete is an ideal choice due to its unbeatable strength, rigidity and longevity. In addition, sweeping off the dust from concrete is relatively easy. Still, the cleaning process gets a bit complicated in case of an oil leak on the driveway or when you accidentally end up dropping some grease on the patio grill. Just using soap and water won’t be enough to get the concrete back to its original glory. If you wonder how to clean grease stains easily, here are some simple remedies that can help you out.
