Ensure Symmetry To Boost Eye Interest

Front Porch Designs Illustrator for a Ranch Style Home

If your landscaping lacks proper arrangement by size, your ranch-style home might look unappealing. Improve the yards appearance by ensuring that trees are arranged according to their sizes. Arrange the low-growing shrubs symmetrically. In the same way, plant the taller plants in pairs to create balance. If your yard has enough space to place raised planter boxes, you can use them to create an illusion of height. Raised plant designs to ensure proper drainage.

What To Add To Your Front Porch

After seeing those beautiful pictures above, chances are you are going to design and build your front porch right away. If you are still unsure what to add to your front porch to enhance its beauty, here are some elements you should consider adding:

  • Rugs. An outdoor rug is a symbol that everyone knows that the front porch is a spot where the guests should kick off the shoes and recharge.
  • Comfortable seating. Even though it is not necessary, it would be nice to spend some time comfortably on your front porch. Add some seatings that can accommodate at least two people.
  • A table. Make sure that you choose an accent table as a convenient spot to put a drink. The table should not be taller than your seatings arms.
  • Accessories. If you want to add a pop of color to your neutral-colored exterior, you can use some accessories, like throw pillows or sculptural decor in a bright color.
  • Potted plants. You can also place some potted plants in a group based on their textures and heights. Make sure the plants you choose can survive the excessive exposure to sunlight.

    Modern Updates Revitalize Ranch Homes

Front Porch Designs for Ranch Homes HomesFeed

Ranch houses have quite a legacy. In fact, during the post-war housing boom of the 1950s they accounted for nine out of every 10 new houses built. While other styles have grown in popularity, ranch homes still have many fans because they offer owners large lots, friendly windows, and first floor master bedrooms ideal for aging knees!

However, since many were built decades ago there may be a need to modernize your ranch homes appearance. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Add warmth with rustic materials such as reclaimed wood for shutters and fencing. French doors are a nice touch to connect the homes inside with outdoor living space like porches and decks.

Freshen the look by painting the brick exterior. Many homes have undergone a virtual transformation by painting red brick white or light gray.

If you love a retro look, paint the front door a bright color and replace your house and mailbox numbers with mid-Century Neutra options.

Ranches can suffer from monotonous horizontal lines so break them up with landscaping upgrades. For example, select shorter shrubs that wont cover a ranchs lower windows. Plant taller plants like evergreen trees to frame your garages entrance.

Large Front Porch Of A Ranch Style Home With Gabled Ceiling And Multi

This is an elegant ranch-style home with the main characteristics of a ranch: red bricks. In order to create a more traditional look, the designer combined the red brick with white columns and windows frames.

The front porch has no seating area, which means that this porch is only meant to be a transit place before the visitors entering the house.

However, this simple large porch enhances the traditional look of this house. It is completed with multi-tapered columns with brick supports. The gabled ceiling makes this house stand out among its neighbors.

There are several steps leading to this front porch. It seems that the floor used here is a concrete floor, which blends seamlessly with the brick exterior and white trim. This is an ideal example of a large transitional front porch with a roof extension.

    Make Improvements To The Porch

Many ranch homes have a small front porch. If your porch is shaded, you can give it a grand entrance by increasing its reach. You can create a taller, pitched roof over it or add a canopy to create more interest. If your property cannot accommodate a larger porch, you can make the most of the existing one by adding minor features such as a decorative railing, updated hardware, or potted plants down the steps.

How Can I Improve My Boring Ranch Homes Curb Appeal

Curb Appeal Tips: Ranch House Makeover

Landscaping is an easy way to spruce up any exterior. When adding plants to a ranch homes exterior, try to choose low shrubs and grasses that wont block low windows. Taller shrubs and trees can root themselves near the garage or entryway to draw attention to these areas.

Painting siding, brick, and trim can completely change the appearance of your home. Because many ranch homes have a small stoop out front, consider expanding the entrance with a larger, welcoming front porch. Because ranch homes can look boxy, introduce curves in your front path and landscaping to soften the edges.

Add Height And Interest Through Layered Landscaping

If your landscaping doesnt vary in size or groupings, your ranch-style home might look as flat or one-dimensional as your yard, even if you have a variation on the traditional ranch style, such as a raised ranch or split-level.

Consider how your yard looks by height and distance , advises Surrounds Landscape Architecture and Construction of Sterling, Virginia, a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals. If everything sits at the same level, it all blends together where combining various sizes and groupings of plants keeps the eye moving.

    Estate Ranch Home Ideas

An estate ranch home is a good option for someone who has a large tract of land and needs extensive square footage. Sprawling and elegant, ranch style home design provides an impressive exterior even as a single-story dwelling. Although many estate homes are multi-storied, an expansive ranch house plan is ideal for those who desire a big house but cant navigate stairs easily.

An estate ranch house can incorporate different overall design styles. For instance, keeping the large picture windows and brick exterior of a 1960s-era ranch maintains the mid-century style. Newly built ranch homes often include Craftsman design touches, such as wide, tapered columns and a welcoming front porch. Contemporary or traditional, an estate ranch style house can be as big as you wish.

    Cut Back Trees And Shrubs

Its easy for a ranch house to become lost among busy landscaping. Tobias lived in a ranch-style home and says that trimming a tree to expose the front stonework made the home look bigger. A large tree also can block the natural light that a ranch-style home tends to draw through large front windows.

The average cost of pruning a tree runs from about $80 to $500, depending on the size of the tree and how much work it needs. However, if you have a tree thats growing too large for your yard, or showing dead or broken branches, or cracks in the trunk , you might be better off removing it.

Mark Hughes, a certified arborist for about 15 years with Arborist Aboard, Inc., in the Tampa, Florida, area, charges about $500 to remove a tree thats 12 inches in diameter around the trunk and not close to any structure. Removing the same size tree that hangs over a screened room in a backyard is more involved and would cost about $1,500.

If trees arent a concern, be sure that any shrubs and bushes along the front of the house dont obstruct the windows, either. Bushes should always be cut underneath the windows, for sure, says Tobias, noting that older clients interested in ranch-style homes especially prefer a lot of natural light.

A ranch floor plan is perfect for homes on the smaller end of the square foot range. Smaller ranch homes are perfect for retirees, small families, and young adults purchasing their first home. The beauty of the ranch house style is that it works equally well for small cottages as sprawling estates. Simplicity, easy access to outdoor living zones, and one-story living are appropriate regardless of your available square footage.

With a small ranch home, focus on highlighting its cozy aspects. Light colors on walls and furniture help rooms make the most of available natural light. Ideas Of A Ranch Style Home With A Fun And Bright Front Porch

This is basically an ordinary classic front porch with a neutral color palette, roll-down screens, vintage furniture, and a concrete floor. What makes it look extra is the pop of color from the sofa cushions and the throw pillows.

The exterior itself was painted in Sherwin Williams Dewy 6469. The trim color was painted in Sherwin Williams Extra White 7006, while the floor is concrete and was painted in Benjamin Moore Porch & Floor Enamel. The furniture pieces are vintage fiberglass. What an inspiration for a mid-sized front porch in a coastal style.

The vintage furniture pieces were completed with bright blue cushions and patterned yellow throw pillows. The round table is also in a similar bright yellow color. All of them genuinely give a splash of color in a creamy white front porch. This way, the exterior of this house wont look too plain and boring.

There are rolling down screens in a track. They are secured to the floor to protect the porch from the bugs. Those would mount inside the railings, so only a minimal additional structure was needed to create the holding track. It is called retractable porch screening.

Hip roofs are another great option and make for an interesting porch roof design. Hip roofs have equal angled sides whereas a mansard roof may have unequal sides. Either one can work well for ranch style homes but the mansard style roof offers more flexibility. Here’s an example of an aesthetically pleasing front porch with a mansard roof on a ranch style home.

Again, the slope of your home’s roof will dictate the style of your hip or mansard roof as evidenced in the photo below. Compare this with the mansard roof designs featured above. On a mansard roof, you can add depth to your front porch by extending the ridge board which will in turn extend the size of the angled sides.
