How Do I Keep Lizards
- P McCammon on Mar 01, 2018I’ve heard that there are a few things that lizards don’t like. Egg shells, coffee grounds are two of them. You could put some in a bowl and set it near the furniture and see what happens.
- Naomie Moore aka baileyanddaisey, Castaic CA on Mar 02, 2018They are great for your yard and garden. Be grateful they have taken up residence in your yard. Part of nature, and are just so cute! Watching a lizard eating a strawberry has got to be one of the most amusing things in life. I look forward to it every year. If you still want to deter them, here are a few natural options.
Make The Surface Sticky
Annoying the birds isnt difficult. All you have to do is make it difficult for them to land, perch, or roost on a surface. You can install bird spikes for sure but in case the surface wont allow, a bird gel repellent will save the day.
One of the best finds in the market is the Bird B Gone Transparent Bird Gel. It has a component that can cover 10 feet of area per tube and can withstand harsh weathers. The reason why this is the best choice for your porch is its colorless characteristic that wont ruin the look of your doorway.
If you dont want the birds to get stuck, just apply it thinly on the sills of your porch. Make sure to use a pair of gloves as the gel is really sticky and it can put you in a washing spree if youre not careful.
What Animals To Watch For
Alberta is home to many nesting animals, being mixed and short grass prairie, boreal forest, and foothills with sparse thickets of aspen trees. In this type of landscape, small mammals and birds are looking for a safe, enclosed shelter year-round and insects look for homes from spring through fall.
Porcupines arent that concentrated in urban areas, but they can affect suburbs near the edge of town. Theyre known for chewing wood, so if you have wicker or teak chairs and tables, they can cause a lot of damage. Garden mice or Albertas meadow voles are small and flexible enough to shimmy into the smallest cracks, and theyll chew wood to make room for living space.

Hang Shiny Objects Near The Light
One of the best and easiest ways to keep birds away is to hang shiny objects. Birds dont like the reflective properties of foil, mirrors, or old CDs. While you can buy reflective bird deterrents, its just as easy to make your own out of any old reflective materials around your house. Hang them around your lights and the birds will stay away.
Do Fake Owls Keep Birds Away
Fake owls can absolutely keep many smaller species of birds away from your patio.
They function as scarecrows, much in the same way as rubber snakes and scarecrows. Ive actually found the less realistic-looking owls work better than their ultra-realistic cousins. You can find an example of a realistic-looking owl at this link and decide for yourself.
Be forewarned fake owls will not phase larger species of birds, as owls are not one of their natural predators. In this case, an actual scarecrow would probably work better.

How Not To Keep Birds Away
When looking up bird deterrents you may come across some extreme options, such as shooting or poison. As frustrating as birds can sometimes be, at Bird Feeder Hub we never recommend harming our feathered friends. Here are some potentially harmful deterrents that you may want to avoid.
Bird Repellent Gels
These gels are spread on a surface and remain tacky, and the birds dont like the slick and gooey feeling and wont want to land. They claim to be non-toxic and non-harmful. The problem is that the sticky gel is going to get all over the birds feathers, and it may be very hard for them to clean it off. Affecting a birds feathers can hinder its ability to fly.
Feathers also insulate them from the cold, and if the downy layer is matted with goop, they wont be able to retain heat properly. Even worse, some Amazon reviews I read said birds were get fully stuck in the goop and sometimes even were found dead, much like a mouse on a glue trap. This just doesnt seem like a safe or humane option.
Shooting, trapping, and poison
From the U.S Fish and wildlife service, All wild birds are protected by federal and state laws. You may not trap, kill or possess protected species without federal and state permits.
Keeping Your Options In Mind
If you go with granite, steel, or aluminum furniture, you might not get as much damage. But these animals can still leave quite a mess. Is There A Smell That Birds Hate
In addition to colors, you can use another one of the birds senses against them. There are quite a few smells that actively repel birds, many of which you can buy in any department store.
Birds are a lot like Captain Patio, in that we both hate the smell of mothballs. Its unsurprising that this foul smelling invention repels them.
If you try this method, I recommend you place the mothballs on the outer perimeter of your patio. However, placing them closer to where the birds are defecating is perfectly reasonable .
Birds are unlike Captain Patio in this way. I absolutely love the smell of citronella and dont mind having that aroma all over my outdoor area.
The major drawback to this approach is that youd have to keep a citronella candle burning 24/7 for it to be truly effective. However, for a short-term solution you can reach for this approach.
