How To Remove Glass From A Patio Table

I started by taking apart the table with the help of my husband. The patio table is made up of two separate pieces the bottom part with the legs and the top part with the glass. To remove the glass you have to first remove the clips under the glass.

The clips on my table were old, and the plastic was hard and cracked, so they popped out easily. If yours are in good condition you may need to pry them out with a flat head screwdriver.

How To Paint A Glass Coffee Table With Krylon Fusion Paint

Although Krylon Fusions label markets it for plastic, it adheres beautifully to glass, metal and wood as well, making it the perfect choice for refinishing a glass coffee table. This requires little prep work: A table in otherwise good condition does not need sanding or priming however, clean the table with a mild detergent and water if necessary. Practice painting on a scrap piece of wood to get a feel for the can and the paint product. Even the most experienced spray painter benefits from this.

1

Measure the width and length of the areas of the coffee table you wish to paint, separating them by color. Find the square footage of each and purchase enough Krylon Fusion paint to complete the project. A can covers approximately 25 square feet however, this is only for one coat. You need at least two for an opaque finish.

2

Move the coffee table to an outdoor area and set it on sawhorses positioned over a drop cloth.

3

Inspect the frame of the coffee table. For wood, lightly sand down any raised areas and fill any cracks or nicks with wood filler. Once it dries, sand the filler smooth. With a metal coffee table, look for rust and remove it with a commercial rust-removing product according to manufacturer directions.

4

Cover the frame of the coffee table with plastic sheeting and painters tape, as applicable, leaving only the glass exposed.

Step 2 Mix Your Paint Very Well

Ive used Beyond Paints Off White and Nantucket before . Both turned out amazing!

And since you can use it on outdoor furniture, too, I wanted to use it again. I like that theres a sealer to help protect it. Just what I need!

Beyond Paint is a non-toxic low-VOC hearty paint . It goes on really smooth, has lots of pigment and body, and I like that its got a bit of sheen to it. Its got a little sheen to it and lots of pigment, so its a full-body paint for projects that you want full coverage.

No sanding, no primer needed.

Its self-sealing, so when I did my china cabinet and dresser, I was able to skip sealer and wax. WOO HOO! .

But since this table is going to be outdoors, it was going to need sealer.

Oh, and before I forgetuse a roller with this paint. Its got some texture to it, and the texture responds well with a roller.

If youre doing a piece that has lots of nooks and crannies, then you can use a brush, but youll just need it for pushing the paint into the crevices. Otherwise, just use rollers!

While walking the aisles of Target I saw some of the delicious colors that Devine Paint has and knew it was time to do something about that table. I had thought about painting the top several times, but didnt know how to seal it for weather properly. It suddenly occurred to me that I could paint the bottom!

Choosing Paint And Brushes

  • 1Use enamel paint for long-lasting decoration. There are several different types of enamel paint that will give you different final appearances. All of them will take some time to dry fully but should stay on your glass for a long time once they have set. Here are a few different types of enamel paint you could choose from:XResearch source
  • Gloss enamel paints will give you the thickest coat and result in a more opaque finish.XResearch source
  • Frosted glass enamel paints will give a much lighter coat for a slight hint of color.XResearch source
  • Crystal gloss enamels will provide you with something in between the two.XResearch source
  • 2Choose acrylic paint and gesso for a finished, matte look. Gesso is a combination of a binder and white powder that will make nearly any surface easily paintable. Use a base coat of gesso with top coats of acrylic paint for a totally opaque finished glass painting.XResearch source
  • Gesso and acrylic paints will work best on bottles, glasses, or other containers with interesting shapes. Painting with gesso and acrylic on a flat pane of glass will look very similar to a painted canvas.
  • 3Use glass liner and water-based glass paints for a simple, stained glass look.XExpert Source
  • What Is The Best Way To Spray Paint Metal Furniture

The #1 rule for spray painting is to do many light coats to avoid drips. It can be so annoying to do multiple coats of paint .

However, it is worth it to do a slow, careful paint job and get a smooth finish.

If you do get drips, you can dab them up quickly with a cloth. You will just need to paint back over that section.

I like to let the paint dry fully between coats. Refer to your spray paint can for specific directions.

After painting your furniture fully, let it dry over night. Then, flip it upside down. This will expose new angles and crevices that you likely missed.

Let the paint dry over night before replacing cushions or tabletops or moving back into use!

What Spray Paint Do I Use On Metal Outdoor Furniture

You can use most spray paints. However, you want to look for a can that specifically says METAL on it listed as a use.

If your furniture is particularly rusty, you might consider a separate metal primer.

The paint that I chose is Krylon brand in a Satin Jade color. I selected a paint and primer in one, since my furniture wasnt severely rusted.

Once youve covered all the stencil surface with paint, carefully peel up your stencil from one corner. Youre going to want to let the paint on the table dry for 15 or 20 minutes until it feels dry to the touch before you do the next stencil. But dont worry! This is the only time were going to need to wait.

How To Make A Perfect Glass Patio Table Makeover

If you are looking something to spiff up your porch, try this glass patio table makeover.

I am excited to show you how I made thiswell I dont want to say uglybut boring glass patio table into something much much cuter! I see these tables all over the place for super cheap. They are usually a lot less than other outdoor dining tables. This one didnt have any chairs with it, so we built these $10 benches to go with it. I looked at the table on my porch for awhile just looking blah and kind of yuck trying to get an idea of what to do with it.

What Are You Going To Do

You ring the local garden center or shop where you purchased the Patio Dining set and they suggest perhapsbuying another table set or if they are really good, they might be able get hold of another table in 12 weeks orhowever long it takes to get a shipping container over when all you need is just the table glass.

If you just require the glass then give us a call at table glass online and we can easily and efficientlyhave a new glass top cut to size and ready for you within 10 working days or most possibly earlier.

What thickness do I need for my Patio Table Glass Replacement?

Typical thickness in UK glass production is either 4mm or 6mm, commonly when replacing customers opt for 6mm for a bit more integrity than the standard 4/5mm which most tables are supplied with. We advise having the edges polished, as the toughening furniture stamp can be neatly applied to the edge. Unpolished edges on the glass wont cut you, but unpolished glass is commonly used if the glass is being recessed into the frame. Also if unpolished, you will have a face toughening stamp on the glass.

What if I need a hole in my glass for a parasol?

Of course if you need a new hole for your parasol, they are typically 50mm in diameter and placed centrally in the glass, however some are larger, so please contact us if they are, as the cost increases.

Have a tempered glass patio table that has paint on the underside. It’s began flaking off a year ago. Is there an easy way to remove all of it? Always thought it was strange that it was painted in the first place.

    • Gail Givens on Dec 09, 2018

Thank you Betty. I’ll try the suggested method of soap and water first and then try something stronger if it doesn’t work.

    HI Gail,

My name is Linda and I found an article about removing paint from glass. This particular article is for window glass, but the process should be the same for your table. There are a few steps and a caution, but if you do it slowly it should be fine. Wishing you the best.

  • Gail Givens on Dec 09, 2018

Thank you Linda. I will try the soaking in warm water and soap first then resort to something with more chemicals if it doesn’t work.

  • Judith on Dec 08, 2018

I took my table apart….soaked it in hot soapy water….then scraped it with a plastic flipper……and 99 percent came off. I got the last 1 percent off with fingernail polish.

  • on Dec 09, 2018

Hi Judith. Thank you. Since your method was suggested twice, I will give this a try first.

  • What If My Furniture Is Rusty

    Meg

If you have metal furniture sitting outside, its probably going to get rusted eventually. We live in a very wet climate, so metal surfaces dont stand a chance.

    STEP 1: Sand

Use a metal sanding sponge to remove loose rust as much as possible. You can also use steel wool or a wire brush, if you have that on hand.

    STEP 2: Clean

Wipe the rust off really well with a damp cloth.

You need to remove any loose paint or rust as well as dirt, dust, or cobwebs.

This is an annoying step but anything left behind will be painted over and result in a bumpy finish.

If your furniture seems to rust easily, you will definitely want to use a metal primer before re-painting. Look for a spray primer paint that specifically says rust on the bottle.

Is your patio furniture already painted? This is at least the fourth color that has been used on this patio set! No problem, just be sure that you sand odd any loose paint.

If there is tons of rust and chipping paint, you can hire someone to sandblast it or use paint stripper to remove stubborn paint chips.

A wire brush or sandpaper will get a lot of old paint off.

If there is a section you do not want to get paint on, tape it off or tape paper over that section, carefully.

Can Glass Table Tops Be Painted

    DIY Patio Table Makeover

Can glass table tops be painted? In short, yes. You just need to get the preparation right. This means thoroughly cleaning the glass, priming the surface and using high quality products. Painting a glass table top may seem like a bold move but the payoff can be brilliant. In the perfect example of upcycling, a tired and dated table can be completely revitalised and made to look chic or modern.

When painting a glass table top, you can paint either the underside or top surface depending on the finish that you would like to achieve. Painting a light layer underneath the glass is the subtler option as the glass above lessens the effect. However, youll need to choose a shade that complements any tint already present in your glass table top. Such tints tend to be blue-green in colour.

How To Revive A Patio Table

I almost died doing this project. Completely true story. And by died I mean Im the most stubborn chick on the planet and when I set my mind to doing something it WILL get done and I sometimes end up lifting a 100 pound table over my head like one of those mamas who can bench press an entire car. Only Im not one of those mamas. And my biceps are the size of Chiclets.

Sheer determination, Im telling you. Because this busted, rusted patio table sat in our backyard long before we ever came along.

I have no idea how long, just that the previous owners of our house left it behind, possibly for dead. Robert and I were ready to haul it to the dump, but then I decided maybe this little forgotten table needed a new lease on life.

So it was the perfect project for this months Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday.

The Little Table That Could just needed a LOT of elbow grease I know its hard to tell, but thats a glass table top. I honestly thought it was solid gray when I first saw it.

But since we really really wanted a table outside to have dinner on warm summer nights by the pool , it was worth a shot.

I could not BELIEVE it was even the same table after I was done with it!
