Post And Beam Patio Cover Plans

Tips For Purchasing Materials

How to Make a Two Post Patio Cover – Cantilevered Design
  • Be flexible. I had originally planned on using 4×4 beams and joists, but local codes wouldnt allow for them, so I used 10×2″ headers and 6×2″ joists, which worked out just fine. Also, be prepared to modify your plan at the store when youre getting your materials, as doing so can save you money. For instance, I chose drywall screws instead of nails because, for some reason, they were less expensive, and they wont try to work themselves back out after a few years. Another substitution I made was choosing 3- and 4-inch deck screws instead of framing nails. Although more costly, they hold much better than framing nails outdoors.
  • Shop around. Shopping around for the best prices for materials was absolutely necessary. In the same town, in an area of fewer than 10 miles, the difference in prices was enormous. Total material costs ranged from $2,200 down to $800.
  • Beware the store associates. Some are aggressive and want to push customers into an insane buying frenzy, bringing up a storm of confusing nonsense that somehow equates spending more to saving more. The lumber store I bought from had an associate who simply made sure I bought the correct materials for the job by looking over my plan and suggesting shorter screws for the joist hangars and a lower grade of lumber for the areas of the patio cover that would not be exposed to the weather. The associate also arranged for delivery, which cost $25.
  • Architectural Posts & Columns

Many millworks produce classical and decorative columns, available through dealers. Those that need to function as structural members are usually made from solid wood, aluminum, or fiberglass composites.

Columns that do not need to support the structure usually have a post made of wood or steel covered by a decorative shell that may be made from wood, aluminum, fiberglass composites, or polyurethane. You can also purchase columns in kit form and customize them with caps and bases to create the decorative look you want.

How To Easily Build A Diy Patio Cover

A modern hardwood flat-roof overhead was built by Rick Ryniak Architects to allow the homeowners to relax and enjoy the surrounding view. When you add in a full covering like this, there’s more of a chance to play with the type of furniture and accents used outside because there’s less exposure to damage-causing elements.

  • Installing The Patio Pavers

    Exposed Beam Cedar Structure

The next day youll find the concrete hard enough to lay the patio pavers. You can buy these at most home centers or patio supply stores. Check the thickness of your pavers before you buy. Our pavers were a bit under 2 in. thick so we needed to level about 3/8 in. of sand over the concrete as a bed for them. Make another screed like the one shown in Photo 3 with a notch cut the same thickness as your pavers. Pour in the sand and pull the screed board across the timbers to even the sand over the concrete. Next, lay the pavers in place as shown in the Figs. A and B. We selected two colors to complement the pavilion, but you can design your own pattern.

You may need to further level some of the corners of the patio stones. Just lift the paver and add or remove sand as needed . If your patio ended up a bit out of square, you may have to cut the edges of some pavers to make them fit. If so, but a masonry blade for your circular saw, put on some goggles and gloves, and trim the edges.

After spreading a thin layer of sand over the concrete, lay the patio stones in place. Sprinkle handfuls of sand to level the stones with the tops of the timbers.

Outline the post locations by tracing around the end cuts of the posts. Be sure you place the outer edges of the inner post 78 in. apart to get the right locations to conform with the beams above. This is crucial for the roof framing to align. Allow a 3-in. space between the inner and outer columns.

    Go For A Thatched Shade

Higgins Architects opted for this unique shade structure with a metal framework and a thatch-style roof instead of a more classic option. It feels ultra fitting for an outdoor spaceespecially for people looking to make their exteriors feel more natural. The addition of plants, stonework, and tile adds to that aesthetic.

Getting A Building Permit For A Patio Cover

Some people said a building permit was unnecessary, while others said it was impossible to get without a contractor’s license, or that it would raise my property tax, etc. So I called the permit and licensing office and got the correct answers.

    • Yes, a permit was required.
    • No, it wouldn’t raise my taxes,
    • As long as the property owner didn’t care if I wasn’t a licensed contractor, they didn’t either.

Getting the building permit was actually much easier than I thought. I took the plans to the towns permit and licensing office, filled out some paperwork, and the next morning I got a call and went back to the permit office to pick up and pay for the permit, which came to $85. They made a couple of alterations to the plan that not only were easy to accommodate but also made the project easier and cheaper!

To prepare for the final inspection, I took pictures of each critical step to show the building inspector, which made the final inspection a snap.

Hanging from the painted wood-frame shade structure is a gold and white pendant light that adds a playful touch of metallic. But the most powerful splash of color comes from the neon green and aqua blue chairs and pillows.

Beginning Construction On The Patio Cover

Early the next morning, the materials arrived at my house. Once the materials were unloaded, I began carrying the 10-foot-long boards and corrugated metal sheets to the backyard, laying them out in a pattern to roughly match how they would be assembled.

I also separated the corrugated metal sheets, wiped each one down with a light coat of vegetable oil, and then re-stacked them. This was something I had seen a neighbor do a long time ago when I was a child. I dont know if it served any purpose other than making me feel better. Its a step I probably could have skipped, but who was I to doubt the wisdom of the ancients?

So lets start from the beginning with the design. My husband wanted the biggest deepest patio we could get with unobstructed views. Our current patio was 30 long and that length was good so that we didnt cover the windows to two of our bedrooms. Our house is already on the darker side and we wanted to keep as much natural light inside as possible. So we knew 30 long, but how were we going to that big of a span without posts in the middle? I didnt think it was possible, but my husband wouldnt give up on it. So I went and talked to an architect friend and he said it would be possible with an 18 glulam. He also suggested adding another set of posts close to the outside that wouldnt block any views but would help balance the look. I totally agreed and is one of our favorite features. He also said we could get away with smaller joists, but because we were leaving them exposed, I went with 3x8s to again balance the look. As far as the depth, we settled on 14 so that we could use standard 16 joists rather than having to up the joist size to 20 and then cut them down to size.

Next up was #DemoDay! It was sure nice to see the old patio go down and that meant things were getting real! I did salvage the wood and made a dining table for the new patio. If you havent seen that build, you can check it out here. It is a real conversation piece when I tell people what I made it from.

Then lastly some paint, lighting fixtures and the patio was ready to be enjoyed.

    Freestanding Metal Roofing Patio Cover

    The Riverside Timber Frame Porch

The aim of building a freestanding patio cover is to protect you from the rain and the glare of the sun. Therefore, you can use any materials for the roof including the tin roof.

Tin roof, just like any other metal roofs, has many benefits. Tin roofs are more durable than wooden and plastic roofs. They are also lighter which makes them easier to install. They are also resistant to fire.

This patio features a very simple structure and there is nothing wrong with that. The simple structure tends to be practical rather than aesthetical.

The black metal posts and beams are sturdy enough to support the tin roof. To get a cooler breeze, a fan hangs over the table.

Pick Out A Polished Wood Focal Point

On top of this, interior elements like accent rugs and multiple seating areas make it feel even more elevated.

Freestanding Patio Cover With Traditional Accent

This patio provides a bit traditional accent to your backyard. It is like the ones that you can encounter in Bali.

The stained wooden posts give a more natural and impressive look to the patio. The exposed beam ceiling makes the patio look more attractive although it does not feature sophisticated patterns.

The black roof shingle plays an important role in creating the traditional ambiance. It suits the chairs perfectly.

Since the roof slopes down from the center, it does not accumulate water, snow, and leaves which makes it easier to clean.
