For most pergolas, two SkyLift Roof Risers are all that are needed to support the structure on the house side. Saddles on top of the Roof Risers are made to fit either a 4-inch or 6-inch beam that the pergola structure sits on and attaches to. The free side of the pergola sits on a similar beam supported by posts.

What a beautiful and lovely pergola! This is different from any other pergola you may have ever seen.
This is basically a traditional brick pergola. However, instead of a usually exposed structure of post and beam, this pergola has an exposed gable roof structure. There is no column to support the pergolas roof. It is simply attached to the main roof of the house.
What makes it unique is the roof is decorated with flowers. The plant you see here is Distictis Bignoniaceae with blood-red trumpet flowers. This vine serves as a cover for this uncovered pergola.
The plants were planted in a small box made out of bricks on each side of the pergolas front. Later, those are crawling up to the pergolas roof.
It covers a seating area that can be used as a spot to enjoy some cups of tea outdoor.
If you are curious how the pergola is attached to the roof, you can see here that there is a vertical wall above the window and the door. The arbor is attached below the roof overhang.
The designer decided to leave some space between the roof and the rafters to let the airflow. It is important to allow airflow so the wood can stay dry. Changes in the weather cant bother the structure too. So, the rafters on the left side here are not attached to the roof.
The vertical wall above the door is vertical pieces of wood. They were bolted to the existing wall to hold the beams extending to the two front posts.

The Ledger Board is attached to the Roof with 90 Degree Heavy Duty Stanley Brackets . The Brackets are then Lag Bolted to the Roof and sealed watertight.
Note: The roof top brackets, wood ledger board and lag bolts are to be purchased locally by customer.

Drill Pocket Holes At The End Of Each Rafter
Use an HD Kreg jig to drill two holes per end on your rafter board. Youll need a partner for help the jig will try to kick out from under you as you drill.
Have a helper place his/her foot against the end of the HD Kreg jig to hold it against the end of your board.
Press down firmly with one arm as you drill your pocket holes. Doing this secures the HD jig into place, both from the end of your board and onto the face of your board.
Drill two pocket holes, each about 1 away from the sides of the board, onto each end of your rafter. These pocket holes should share the same face of the board so that one side of your pergola rafters looks like theyre floating.

Metal brackets are popular for rafter installation. Theyre graded for outdoor use and provide a secure way to hold lumber in place. However, because you need to place brackets on each end of each board, they dont provide a clean, modern aesthetic.
Of course, construction isnt all about the aesthetic appeal you also want the finished product to be safe and secure. Thats why the method were using is a win-win. The installation of each rafter is fast, the connection is secure, and it will last as long as the bracket method but for a lower cost.
