What Size Patio Umbrella Do I Need
by Rick Gleesson | 06/10/20 | General Information
A patio umbrella is the perfect addition to any outdoor area. It not only provides protection from the weather, it also makes a stylish feature for your property.
Choosing the right size patio umbrella for your pool deck or outdoor table is crucial. If its too big it will overwhelm the area and look out of proportion. If its too small it simply wont get the job done. So before you make a purchase, take another look at the area where your patio umbrella will be going and the furniture youre using it with. Do some quick measurements and ask yourself what size patio umbrella do I need?
The Diameter Of The Canopy
If you want to measure the canopy diameter, you need to measure the seating arrangement that you want to be covered. You should also take into consideration the possibility of adding extra chairs and tables if you have a larger gathering. The canopy size is determined by opening the umbrella and then measuring it from one tip of one side, over the top and to the tip of the other side. Another element to consider is the possibility of buying more than one umbrella, especially if you need pool umbrellas. Pool umbrellas are a great addition to family pool days, but you will need more than one umbrella to provide shade for guests who are chatting and for those who are relaxing on your lounge chairs.

Remove The Existing Canopy
Gently remove the ribs from the sleeves of the existing canopy. Be careful not to bend the ribs to the point of breaking them! The first rib will be the most difficult, and once you have a couple of ribs off, the rest of the canopy should be easy to remove. You may want a second person to help with this step.

Measure The Pole Diameter
Another important factor you should consider is the diameter of the umbrella pole. The thicker the pole, obviously the sturdier the umbrella is going to be, but this can also have some drawbacks. If you are planning to buy an umbrella for the purpose of placing it through the middle of your patio table, you need to measure the diameter of that hole. The majority of outdoor patio tables have a hole that is around 2, although some brands will create a larger hole.
You need to make sure that the diameter of the umbrella pole is smaller than the width of the hole, to ensure that the umbrella can fit.
If you do not plan on placing the umbrella in an outdoor table, then, of course, this does not matter, and the thicker the pole is, the sturdier the umbrella will be. The umbrellas that Sunniland Patios sell are all fitted with a 1.5″ pole, but this is high-quality aluminum, that is designed for its durability and strength.
In saying that, it is still important to know the diameter of the pole, so that you can purchase a base that is the correct fit for your umbrella. Bases are generally sold separately from the umbrella, so it is necessary to find one that fits. The base hole should have a diameter that matches your umbrella or be a little larger. But you dont want it to be too large, because then the umbrella will not be fully stabilized.

Replacement Umbrella Canopy: How To Guide
Updated: Eric Clark
Many patio umbrella canopies will rip, fade, and lose their luster after a few years. It just happens, even with the best of fabrics. The sun beating on the fabric all day, harsh winds, repeated use, and the elements all take their toll on the umbrella canvas. Often the canopy will be in rough shape, but the underlying umbrella frame is still fine. If the ribs are still in good shape, the crank mechanisms still work, and the pole still looks good, it may make sense to get a replacement umbrella canopy rather than buying a whole new umbrella.
Purchasing a replacement canopy is often significantly cheaper than buying a whole new umbrella. If the frame is in good shape, you may even consider upgrading to a higher quality fabric like Sunbrella for your replacement canopy, which would give you a much higher end look, without spending the money on a whole new umbrella!
The biggest challenge is determining whether a given replacement umbrella canvas will fit your umbrella frame. For that reason, we have created this guide to ordering a patio umbrella canvas replacement.

What Are You Trying To Accomplish

The first item to consider when purchasing a commercial umbrella is determining what you are trying to accomplish. Youll want to ask yourself questions like:
- What is the size of the space I want to shade?
- Why am I purchasing an umbrella? For UV protection, all-weather protection, to create a comfortable space for my guests, to provide a break from the sun?
After youve answered these questions, youll be able to determine the type of commercial canopy umbrella that is best suited for your needs.

Check The Fit And Adjust If Necessary
Open and Close the Umbrella, and see how the new umbrella cover replacement looks on your frame. If it is too small, obviously you shouldnt try to open the umbrella all the way, as it will rip. Return it, measure again, and order a different size.
If it is a bit too big, you can consider picking up some Rubber Leg Tips from your local home improvement store, which will fit over the ends of the umbrella ribs and add a bit of distance to the ribs. These tips will extend the overall length of the umbrella a bit and may make it tauter.
If the size is way too big, return and get a different umbrella canvas.
Replacement Canopies And Frames
Need a replacement? Replacing a canopy or frame is a great way to extend the life of your umbrella, or easily update its color or style. Keep in mind that canopies and frames are often brand-specific, and when ordering a replacement, youll want to know your existing umbrellas brand, model, size, and the shape and number of ribs.

What Type Of Umbrella Is Best For My Space
There are many commercial umbrella styles to choose from Superior Shade has 5 styles and that doesnt even include the different shapes that are available! Based on where you are installing the umbrella and what it is being used for, there are go-to umbrella types for those locations. For example, if you are wanting to shade guests lounging by the pool opt for a cantilever umbrella that allows for unobstructed views of the water. If you are wanting to shade a bench or one table, wed suggest opting for a dual-column umbrella. Likewise, if youre looking for splash pad umbrella, a single post or tilt and swivel umbrella may be best. Heres a quick overview of the types of umbrellas that are offered:
Measuring For A Patio Umbrella Based On Patio Size
Another thing to keep in mind when buying a patio umbrella is the size of the space where it is going to be placed.
When figuring out how to measure for the perfect patio umbrella, consider where you are going to place it.
If the space where you are placing your umbrella is very compact and very cramped, you likely need to get a smaller umbrella in the 6-8 feet range.
If you have a larger space to fill you can buy a larger umbrella that is going to help cover more space and provide more shade.
Some great umbrellas today use booms and heavily counterweighted bases to provide a HUGE amount of shade for a large gathering area on your patio.
Consider possibly getting 2 or 3 umbrellas if your space if very large and make sure they are positioned so as not to hit each other when fully opened.
How you are placing the umbrella also makes a difference.
For those that are placing an umbrella on a table you need to consider the table, as mentioned before, and if you are placing your umbrella in a stand you do need to make sure you are getting the right size stand to be able to support both the weight and size of the umbrella.
The larger the umbrella, the more likely it is to tip over if the base is not large enough.
For large counterweighted cantilever style patio umbrellas make sure to account for the amount of space the BASE will need and where the base will be positioned relative to your patio furniture.

Note Your Existing Canopy Ventilation
Take a look at how the ventilation works in your existing umbrella canopy. The vast majority of umbrella canopies have a single vent in the center, a top hat that channels air through the canopy, preventing the umbrella from flying away on a gusty day. However, there are other ventilation methods available like double venting umbrella canvases, and you must be sure to match the ventilation style in your market umbrella replacement canvas to your existing umbrella fabric.
There are not many double-vented patio umbrella canvas replacements around, but this one may fit your umbrella:
How To Measure The Size Of A Patio Umbrella
A patio umbrella can be a great addition to any patio or garden, but it is so important to make sure that you have one that is the right size. It is simple enough to understand the measurements that are used so that you can find one that is the perfect fit for your outdoor living space. Let’s get measuring!

How To Measure Patio Umbrellas
First, open your umbrella and make certain its completely extended. Then measure from the top of the patio umbrella along one of the ribs or arms that extent from the center hub. Measure that distance from the center hub to end of the rib or arm. Then simply multiply that number by 2, that is the size of your umbrella.
For example, if your umbrella has ribs that are 5 feet long, then you have a 10 foot patio umbrella. Remember patio umbrellas are measured by canopy width not overall height.
Another important measurement to know is the Crank Height.
This measurement is called the crank height. You may need to know this if you are buying an umbrella for a taller table, like a bar height table.
The Crank Height is the distance from the base of the umbrella pole to the cranking mechanism, if it has one. The beautiful patio umbrella featured in our graphic, is the BambrellaLevante Center Pole, it doesnt not have a crank, but many center pole umbrellas from our Galtech collection do, so the Crank Height can be an important measurement. Why? Well consider if you are going to be using your umbrellas in a table, the height of your table needs to be shorter than your Crank Height.
