How To Remove Algae From Wrought
When you live in a region with a climate that contains a lot of moisture, the wrought-iron furniture in your backyard, on your deck, porch or patio may begin to grow algae in its nooks and crannies. If left untreated, algae — along with excessive moisture — can weaken wrought-iron furniture and cause it to rust. While algae looks unsightly, it does not take much effort to remove it and keep your wrought-iron furniture looking new.
Fill a bucket with warm water and add several drops of liquid dish soap. Swirl the mixture around with your finger to create suds.
Dip a stiff-bristled brush into the sudsy water. Scrub the algae covered spots on the wrought-iron furniture. This removes most of the algae, as well as dirt and other debris.
Attach a nozzle to the hose to better direct the spray and increase the water pressure from the hose. Spray the algae-cleaned areas with the hose and nozzle. You can also wipe it with a damp cloth. Let dry in the sun.
Apply a strong disinfectant or sterilizing solution to the algae-stained area. You can create a homemade disinfectant that is safe for outdoor use and plants by mixing a solution of oxygen bleach and water following package directions.
Let the disinfectant or sterilizing solution set for 24 hours, then rinse it off.
- Pay attention to store-bought disinfectants or sanitizers as they may not be safe for use near plants, animals or small children.
Are Polyurethane Cushions Safe
Polyurethane foam is a potentially harmful material used in upholstered furniture and mattresses. While free of toxic flame retardants, upholstered furniture still utilizes toxic materials. In addition to TDI, polyurethane in furniture in your home may continue emitting toxic volatile organic compounds .
How To Wash Outdoor Cushions
For items that can go in the washer, once the pretreating is complete, use a heavy-duty detergent and cold or warm water . Do not place the fabric in a hot dryer because that may cause shrinkage. Allow the pieces to air dry. Use a cool to medium iron to smooth wrinkles if needed.
For items like large pillows or umbrella covers that cannot be placed in a washer, choose a sunny, warm day to do the cleaning. Spread the piece out on a patio or plastic tarp and get ready to apply some elbow grease.
Mix a solution of heavy-duty detergent and warm water. Using a soft scrub brush, work from the top to the bottom of a piece scrubbing a small section at a time. Rinse away soil after each section is cleaned. Do not allow the detergent solution to dry on the fabric. When the entire piece is cleaned, rinse well.
Spread the fabric or pillows in the sun to dry. If possible, hang from a clothesline to allow the water to drip and drain away. It may take a couple of days for thick items to dry so plan for hot, sunny weather to avoid mildew problems.
Tips To Keep Your Patio Clean Longer
For those who followed the instructions, scrubbed hard, and used the solution a few times without much luck, know that sometimes tougher measures are called for. A product like Wet & Forget should do the job. While the label says it is bleach-free, phosphate-free, non-acidic, and safe near plants and on all outdoor surfaces , do take caution when using this product. Wear rubber gloves and avoid unnecessary dripping into your garden or grass.
Follow the directions on the container of the cleaning product, making sure that the previous cleaning solvents have been thoroughly rinsed off with a strong blast from the hose. While the product used may claim that scrubbing isn’t necessary, it will probably be necessary to have those sleeves rolled up; continue to scrub the moldy/mossy area until it’s free of all the green stuff.
Try revisiting the area in a week or two to keep on top of the mold and mildew. Persistence will pay offif you regularly do a light cleaning of the space, more thorough cleanings every few months won’t be necessary.
