How To Hang Patio Lights

Build Your Own Supports

How to hang patio string lights

Our final method to hanging outdoor lights is to build your own supports. This is the most expensive and time-intensive option but it can be well worth the effort.

Although there are countless ways to build supports, my favorite method uses buckets and poles to ensure easy portability. In my opinion, this is far superior to a permanent method where you bury the pole in the actual ground.

My favorite method to build your own supports consists of placing support poles in two heavy-duty buckets and then adding in a heavy fill material.

I prefer wood poles but hollow metal poles and even PVC pipe also work well. I like to fill each bucket with gravel to hold the pole in place. However, for a somewhat more permanent design you can fill the buckets with concrete, like Quikrete.

Simply cut the poles to your desired height, place each in a bucket, fill the bucket with a heavy material, and hang your lights – voila, you’ve just completed one of my favorite patio lighting ideas!

How To Attach Light Strings With Clips

  • Measure The Perimeter-It is essential to measure the perimeter of the area that you want to decorate, so that you can get the right number of strings to comfortably cover the distance. Also, it will be helpful to know the color pattern you want to display, such as using only one color, randomly mixing colors, or alternating colors.
  • Get A Sufficient Number Of Clips-Purchase a large enough number of clips to cover the distance, with one clip every 6 to 8 inches it depends on the type of light you want to use. Bulb-type lights such as C7 use larger clips than mini lights or icicle lights.
  • Protect Clips With Adhesive-Use adhesive along the perimeter you want to decorate to secure the clips. It is advisable to follow the product instructions for applying the adhesive and allowing sufficient time for the adhesive to cure.
  • Test Light String-To ensure there are no burned-out or missing bulbs, test the light string by connecting the lights into an electrical outlet. Replace bulbs if necessary, and then unplug the lights and take them outside. Arrange the lights along the line of clips, place the cord in each clip as you go, and then plug the light string into an outdoor outlet, using an extension cord.

How To Hang Outdoor String Lights From Diy Posts: Secure Post With Tape

Place the planter on level ground and use a level on one side to make the post plumb. Add painter’s tape across the planter on all four sides of the post to hold it in position. Allow the concrete to harden according to the manufacturers instructions before proceeding.

Arrange the planters in a rectangle no more than 10′ apart.

How To Hang Small Christmas Lights On A Wall Without Using Nails And Making Holes

Related Articles

To drape your Christmas lights around the room the way you want them, you need to attach them to the walls in many places along the strands of wire. This can leave you with a series of small holes you need to patch at the end of the season and taking down the holiday decorations is sad enough without adding hours of extra work to the job. If your lights are small, the strands should be lightweight, which gives you several options for how to hang them without damaging the walls.

  • Stick a small adhesive decorating clip to the walls in each place you want to attach a strand of lights. To secure a vertical stretch of lights going straight up or down the wall, face the clips in alternating directions to make the arrangement more secure. In other words, attach the bottom clip facing left, the clip above it facing right, the third clip facing left and so on. Slide the strands of lights into the arrangement of clips to fasten them to the wall. This system works best on white plaster walls because adhesive decorating clips are most readily available in white.

    Tip : Invest In Decent

This does not mean you need to drop hundreds of dollars on lights. It just means that you might not want to buy the cheapest option you can find. I spent an entire 2-hour Ramona nap one day browsing string lights and reading reviews.

If you search outdoor string lights or outdoor globe lights on Google or Amazon, you get approximately 900 billion results to sort through. I quickly realized that the prices were much better on Amazon than they were through Target, so I started reading through Amazon reviews.

I settled on the black globe string lights, way cheaper than the options at Target, from the Outdoor Lighting Store for a few reasons:

    • Reviews were great.
    • The lights came with extra bulbs.
    • Zip ties were included as well.
    • They claimed to have a warm glow instead of a bright white light.
    • Each strand could be connected to one another.
    • The company offered a two-year warranty and seemed to have pretty good customer service. You could also order new bulbs, which can be difficult with some string lights.

Diy String Light Poles: The In

How to hang string lights for your patio

Our patio dining space is right next to the house, with no convenient trees nearby. So while we could hang them from hooks on the house side, we really needed some poles on the other side of the patio.

We came up with this ultra-simple and inexpensive method for installing string light poles. The PVC stays in the ground year-round, but the poles themselves can be pulled out at the end of the season and stored in the garage. You can watch our quick video tutorial here:

Learn How To Hang Outdoor String Lights

Learn how to use support cables to hang outdoor string lights over your patio or yard.

  • Make a plan

See above for all the considerations . You will want to attach the cables at least 9 off the ground to allow for a bit of sag and for the lights to hang down. Once you have decided these details, measure the space, then order your lights and cable hanging materials.

  • Attach eye hooks perpendicular to the run of the cable

There will be tension on the cable, obviously, so it is important that the eye hooks be installed securely. At least 9 off the ground, choose a position that will allow the eye hook to stick out perpendicular to the direction the cable will run. This will keep the pressure of the cable from trying to pull the screw hooks straight out of the tree. Use a hammer to tap the end of your eye hook into the tree. Once it is secure, begin screwing it in. You may have to repeat the tapping and screwing a few times as it makes its way through layers of bark. Eventually, though, it will catch and you can screw it in securely. To tighten the screw, using a screwdriver through the eye for leverage.

  • Run stainless steel cable

Between each set of eye hooks, run stainless cable and secure using aluminum sleeves or other wire locks. Be sure to pull the cable tight before securing.

  • Finish

Secure the end of your final strand to the last eye hook and enjoy!

How To Hang String Lights If You Only Have A Patio

The same ideas will apply! Instead of attaching the wood poles to a deck, I would suggest putting them into a planter and perhaps filling it with a small amount of cement to really weigh it down. Then fill the rest of the planter with some soil and succulents to make it pretty.

You can also use command hooks to simple drape them across the side of your house, like we did!

How We Hung Our Deck String Lights Privacy Screen And Artwork Outside

Sharing how we hung our String Lights or rather our Deck Lights today. I am a accent lighting fanatic! We live in a 1950s home that really hasnt had any major updates to the exterior besides the small ascetic things we have done. So you arent going to find an outlet outside. If you are building a new home- this is where you make a mental note to add a plug in several spots outside. The plug issue wasnt going to stop me from having a glowing strand of String Lights off our back deck. Also added a privacy screen that I will share the details on this post too!

Disclaimer- this is what WE did. It has worked really well for us but might not for you. Below is what we did and hopefully it will give you an idea that would work for you!

**We went to Home Depot . We found some wood trim that we cut in half right there. Got home, spray painted them all. Installed them. Then realized they were too thin and not supportive enough. So we started over. That is when we used the 60 Wooden Garden Stake because they are thicker and taller. You could also use a plumbing pipe or a metal fence pole. We found that these worked just fine for our lights.

In the above image you can see the Garden Stakes we used. How we spray painted them FIRST. Then attached mini hooks to the garden stake so we could loop the string lights around them.

    A. Measure the border you need to beautify with lights, such as your homes rooftop line, patio overhang, or around window outlines. Buy enough light strings to cover this separation serenely. Consider the shading design you intend to show, such as utilizing just one shading, exchanging two hues, or arbitrarily blending hues.

    B. Purchase an adequate number of clasps to cover this separation with one clasp each 6 to 8 inches, contingent upon the kind of lights you will utilize. Bulb-type lights, known as C7 or C9 bulbs, use bigger clasps than scaled downlights or icicle lights.

How to Hang Patio String Lights

Clean design. Initially, I had wanted the lights to be angled from one corner to the next. Since we had a fan installed, it would be too much for the space. For our space, I wanted to stay clear of a cluttered ceiling, so we opted for the perimeter to be lighted.

However, if you have a fairly open space, I would recommend looking up various ways you can hang the lights .

Measure Your Space. Before you even think about ordering your lights, measure your space and your design. It’s important to think about how you’ll get the light to the outlet, especially if you want to hang the long leading end. Measure your space and your initial design so that you get enough length.

Anchor Ports. Make sure you have anchor ports for the light strands. In our space, since we were securing it around the perimeter, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Use hooks and silicone. If you plan on adding holes to the outside walks, I would recommend using caulking silicone around the hooks to keep the hole from wearing with the weather as well as keeping the bugs out.

Keep the lights away from the wall. While the lights don’t emit that much power, we wanted to avoid any heat to the structures surrounding it as much as possible. As a hack, we added zip ties to the hooks and cut them. The zip ties effectively worked as spacers on the hooks to keep the lights away from the wall. It was cheap and worked.
