If you start to see condensation building up between the glass, your seal has broken. Once the heavy gasses escape the cavity between the glass, the door loses most of its insulation value.

How To Take Measurements Of A Patio Door In New Buildings

The measurement process in new buildings is slightly simpler, as windows or doors are normally not yet installed.

A door can be installed from the inside or outside. To determine the perfect installation location, you should check the measurements from both sides.

  • In new buildings, you simply determine the height of the patio door by taking the measurements of the height between the upper and lower edge in the wall opening. To completely avoid differences in the figures, it is recommendable to take two measurements as well . Different to the dimensions in old buildings, you have to deduct 20 mm from the smaller value.
  • The width should also be measured at two points. Only in this way is it possible to completely eliminate deviations and to ensure an installation without complications. Please also deduct 20 millimetres from the determined value.

Example: The measurements of the wall opening are 1460 mm and 1260 mm . Deduct 20 from each value and the final dimensions are 1440 and 1240 millimetres

Points To Remember While Measuring Sliding Patio Door Blinds

To get the best measurements, use a steel tape measure. Dont get confused between width and height measurements. Follow the width by height format always and mark them down. Measure them to the nearest 1/8 inch. There may be more than one door in the house but make sure to measure them separately. Never assume that all doors are of same size. If you are installing vertical blinds very close to wall heaters ensure that the blinds clear the heaters by 6 inches on the side and 12 inches on the top. There mustnt be any obstructions on either side of the doors that might prevent you from fitting a wider blind. If there are any obstructions near the door then make sure to take measurements to the right and left of the door frames up to the closest obstructions.

Sliding glass doors look beautiful and the blinds you install should do justice to them. For that, the type of blind and fit is of utmost importance. A badly fitted blind either does not cover the doors or is hung to high or not only affects the functionality of the door but also damages the aesthetic sense of the house. To avoid this ensure that the doors are measured following the guidelines.

How To Choose A Patio Door

Lets first get clear on what we mean by the patio door. Patio doors generally come in two styles: sliding and French. Sliding glass doors are two glass panels, with the operable one moving on a track. Since they open horizontally, they dont break off the flow of a room.

They also come in a 3-panel configuration which gives you the appearance of floor-to-ceiling windows. Sliding patio doors are known for their ease of use and contemporary style.

French patio doors are a Renaissance-era design known for their beauty and symmetry. Theyre made up of two doors that are hinged on opposite sides. These Renaissance-era doors make a stylish yet classic statement. But theyre more than just pretty: installing French patio doors is also a great investment. Because theyre so timeless, they increase the resale value of your home.

Measuring Curtains For Sliding Glass Doors

When measuring curtains for your sliding glass doors, take the width measurement from left to right of the door. For height, take the measurement from panelings top part up to the floor.

Additionally, you should add about three inches to your height measurement. These extra three inches will be compensating for the distance present between the top part of the door and the curtain pole.

Regarding the width, you can add extra inches at both ends, this way the curtains will be overlapping the door and the wall when in an open position.

Few of the aspects to consider with respect to measuring and fitting window treatments on sliding glass doors consist of:

  • Checking if there is enough room on the door frames inside section. This will ensure that when the door is opened or slides, it will not be hitting the blind.

  • Another thing to check is, will there be interference between the door handle and the blinds operation when you are opening or closing the blind.

  • Split the sliding door area so that 2 or 3 blinds are installed. This way each of the blinds can be independently operated.

  • Make sure that stacking of vertical blindor the chain side is on door openings opposite side. This way you will have the assurance that it will not get stuck when the door is opened.

  • When taking a measurement for height, ensure that enough space is left for rugs and mats that are kept on the floor.

  • 70mm for roller blinds

  • 50mm for vertical blinds

    External Sliding Door Sizes

Sliding patio doors tend to work better in larger openings. Their big, clear, panes of glass make sliding doors the perfect choice when you really want to soak your home in sunshine.

Our range of sliding doors at Doors & More runs from 1588mm wide, right through to 4776mm. This includes at least one stationary panel and one sliding panel, plus the frame measurements.

Because of the mechanism that works the door will vary in size. It will depend on the material the frame is made from and the type of frame, so it is hard to give an average size.

Whilst sidelights and transoms can be used around sliding doors, they are generally unnecessary. This is because they offer far more flexibility in size as standard.

If you do want to substantially increase the amount of light let in by a set of sliding doors, the best way is to add a couple of extra stationary panels.

    Measure The Door Opening

    • 1.1 Remove the interior trim to expose the jambs.
    • 1.2 Measure the height on both sides of the opening. Measure from the lintel down to the subfloor, the actual surface the doorsill rests on.
    • 1.3 Measure the width across the bottom and top of the opening. Always measure from the jambs and not from the frame of the door you are replacing.
    • 1.4 For each pair of measurements, retain the shortest of the two.
    • 1.5 Measure the frame of the existing door. Measure the width and height from the outside edge of the frame.
    • 1.6 Measure the total thickness of the wall. Vinyl cladding: measure from the interior drywall surface to the exterior lath the vinyl siding is nailed on. Brick exterior: measure from the interior drywall surface to the marks left by the old door on the brick.
