Advantages To Painting Concrete

How to Resurface a Concrete Patio with a Decorative Concrete Overlay

Painted concrete certainly has its advantages. A fresh coat of paint or stain can really spruce up concrete basement or garage walls and floors, bringing new life to a worn concrete patio. Concrete paints and stains help to mask surface discoloration and signs of wear and tear and they extend the life of concrete by preventing further damage. Coating a concrete surface with paint can also make for easier cleaning and maintenance.

Cement Needs To Be Consistency Of Peanut Butter

Prepare the Concrete Patch Mix

Use concrete with at least 3,000 PSI and good adhesion. The concrete comes with its own bonding agent. Put the powder in the wheelbarrow or cement mixer. Add liquid a little bit at a time to a peanut butter consistency. Only mix the amount that can be used in 20 to 30 minutes.

How Much Will It Cost

The cost of resurfacing varies on the detail and size of your surface. It is a more cost-effective option than removing the existing concrete and pouring a new slab. A new pour patio can cost anywhere from $3 – $15, or more, per sq. ft. depending on the size and detail of the design that is being installed. Resurfacing costs between $3 and $10 per sq. ft., making it a budget friendly way to get the look and feel of a new patio.

Patio Resurfacing Vs Replacement: Cost Guide

Posted by admin on in Blog, Uncategorized

The patio has become more than just a paved outdoor area. Nowadays, it is an instrument in bringing family and friends together. It is quite enjoyable to make use of the concrete patio for family events, relaxation, bonding with friends, or as a child activity center. However, all these can wear out the patio sooner or later. When the time comes to address concrete issues, you have the option to resurface or replace. Which is the more economical choice?

Coloring Pattern And Finish

Resurfacing old patios is a breeze with AZEK Pavers. #DIY ...

Why Resurfacing Is Better Than Installing Pavers Over Your Concrete Surface

Pavers can easily become uneven, causing tripping hazards and spots for water to puddle and weeds to grow through. Also, hiring a professional to lay pavers is expensive.

If you like the look of pavers, we can create that look. We can mimic the look of bricks, wood, flagstone, slate, brick, granite, and more. We can also seal the surface for protection from stains and UV damage.

The Bottom Line On Decorative Concrete Resurfacing

We were very happy with not only the DIY process, but the results. I would definitely recommend the SpreadStone Decorative Concrete Resurfacing Kit from Daich Coatings if youre looking for an easy, budget-friendly way to give your patio a makeover. My husband and I completed the project over the course of a few days, and we saved hundreds compared with replacing our concrete patio or having it resurfaced professionally. The before and after results are like night and day, and we feel so happy in our newly refreshed space!

Now that the concrete is clean, make sure your shoes are, too, before you walk on the patio again. The surrounding ground will be wet from concrete cleaning. We changed into a pair of clean, dry shoes to work on the patio. Before cracking open the stain, shield the lower portion of the house and any nearby landscaping materials to protect against drifting spray. Tape plastic film along the siding. You donât have to protect plants and grass if you donât want to . If any dirt gets on the patio after youâve cleaned it, brush the concrete lightly with a broom to avoid pushing the dirt into the surface.

Two: Check The Forecast

Make sure to check the weather forecast before beginning this project. This process can be ruined by wet weather, so make sure that there-s no chance of rain and that the day is dry and preferably sunny. Also, keep in mind that the colder the weather, the longer it will take for the concrete to dry.

Preventing Peeling Paint On A Concrete Porch

Question: I have a concrete porch thats been painted several times. But the paint bubbles and peels off, leaving a mess. Each of the painters has said that this happens to concrete when you paint it over the winter. Im not sure that they are telling me the truth. How do I get the porch painted in the correct manner?

Silver Spring

Answer: A variety of issues could be at play here. First, you should determine whether moisture is coming up through the concrete from below. Tape a piece of relatively thick, clear plastic, such as a three-inch square cut from a reclosable plastic bag, to an area with no paint. If moisture droplets appear over the next day, youll need to strip off all the paint and switch to a coating that resists hydrostatic pressure. Rust-Oleums WaterTite-LV Waterproofing Concrete Masonry Paint is one example. Or you can coat the stripped surface with a concrete-resurfacing material, such as Quikretes Concrete Resurfacer, which can be tinted.

All of the above is fairly standard advice, so your painters may have done that. But they might not have realized some of the details that Mariah Sanchez, senior technical services representative for Behr, says are also important. First, when the paint label tells you what the temperature must be , its referring to the surface temperature of the concrete. That is typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the air temperature. So for most water-based paints, the air temperature needs to be at least 60 degrees.

What Can I Use To Cover My Concrete Patio

You can t turn back time on spalling or cracks, but you can cover them up with the right concrete repair products. For example, a layer of Quikretes Re-Cap Concrete Resurfacer will give your patio a smooth and wear-resistant finish with the look of freshly poured concrete, but with a shorter working and wait time.

Process To Resurface Concrete

Resurfacing a Sidewalk is Easy to DIY

Concrete resurfacing requires prep work, including cleaning and repairing the existing concrete slab before applying the new overlay. Inadequate surface preparation is the most common cause of cracking and delamination in a new overlay.

Resurfacing is only possible over concrete with stabilized expansion joints and a strong foundation.

Is It Better To Paint Or Stain Concrete Patio

Concrete stain embeds the surface to color it translucently, while opaque concrete paint covers the top of the concrete but is subject to chipping and peeling when improperly applied. Concrete stains go on quicker, dry faster and take less work than concrete paint, but they offer no significant protection.

Getting Concrete Resurfacing Cost Estimates

Professional contractors have the tools and experience to ensure the job is done quickly and correctly. Before hiring a pro and signing a contract, be sure to:

  • Get at least three estimates to compare.
  • Let professionals know youâre getting bids from multiple contractors so they offer you their best competitive price.
  • Read reviews and check out their previous work on HomeGuide, Google, and the Better Business Bureau .
  • Select companies that are insured, bonded, and have been in business for longer than five years.
  • Avoid selecting the lowest quote as quality may suffer.
  • Get a detailed estimate with a full breakdown of all costs involved.
  • Ask for a written contract and warranty.
  • Avoid making large payments upfront. Come up with a payment schedule for the work completed.

How To Resurface Badly Damaged Concretewalkways Patios And Driveways

How to Resurface Pool Deck, Driveway or Patio – Part 4

Resurfacing your badly damaged concrete is a good way to renew your concrete without having to demo and replace it with new concrete.

In most cases, I’ve found repairing and resurfacing a concrete walkway, patio, or driveway is much less expensive than removing the old concrete and re-pouring a new one.

Resurfacing concrete for a sidewalk, patio, or driveway is all done the same way.

The steps it takes to resurface your concrete are:

  • Remove any loose, flaking, and broken concrete
  • Clean and patch the deep areas over 1/2″ deep
  • Sand patched areas, clean, and apply first coat of concrete resurfacer then let dry
  • Lightly sand the surface, clean, and apply finish coat of concrete resurfacer with light broom finish.

When Should You Get New Furniture

If youre wondering whether or not you should get a new patio furniture set, consider the following questions:

    • Does your furniture have rust that you have not been able to remove?
    • Are your cushions covered in stains that you cant remove?
    • Are your cushions sun-stained, making them look faded and dirty?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you may want to consider purchasing new outdoor furniture. Outdoor furniture is built to last, but there comes a time when it needs to be replaced.

How To Fix Spalling Concrete: Step By Step

STEP 1. Remove all the loose and damaged concrete by using a hammer, a chisel, an electric hammer drill with chisel bit, or a hand grinder. My preference is a small hand grinder unless I have a very large area, then I’ll use a walk behind grinder.

This is how big the spalled area grew after grinding it and removing all the damaged concrete.

There was a lot of damaged concrete under the surface that you couldn’t see just by looking at it.

All this area would have eventually spalled off if it wasn’t repaired.

STEP 2. Clean the entire area to be resurfaced by grinding or pressure washing it.

Again, my preference is lightly grinding the surface, but a good pressure washer will clean the concrete just fine.

NOTE: If you pressure wash it, let it dry out for 24 hours before resurfacing it.

STEP 3. Patch any deep spalled areas before you resurface the concrete. You can use the resurfacing material as your patching material also.

A deep area would be anything 1/8 inch deep or more.

Make sure to leave the patched area slightly higher than the surrounding concrete.

The patched areas usually dry in 30 to 45 minutes so you can proceed with the resurfacing.

If you try to resurface the concrete without fixing the deep areas first, the resurfacing material will finish up lower than the rest of the concrete.

It is only designed to be broom finished at 1/8 inch thick or a little less.

I use both Ardex CD and Rapid Set NewCrete when I patch and resurface my concrete jobs.

How Long Does Concrete Driveway Resurfacer Last

Enhances your driveways appearance: one of the best values of concrete driveway resurfacing is it improves your driveways appearance. The new layer gives your driveway a fresh look after years of fading and cracking. Extends its lifespan: if you care for your driveway correctly, it should last for up to thirty years.

I Love The Look Of Stamped Concrete Can An Overlay Also Be Stamped And Colored

Concrete Resurfacing: How to Resurface a Concrete Slab ...

Absolutely! With stampable overlays, which are typically applied at a thickness of up to 3/4 inch, you can use the same stamping mats and texturing skins used for traditional stamped concrete to produce patterns and textures that mimic stone, brick, slate, and other materials. Texturing skins produce a seamless texture with no grout lines while mats produce a deeper pattern with well-defined lines. You can also add color using the same dry-shake color hardeners and antiquing releases used for typical stamped concrete.

Is It Expensive To Resurface Concrete

Concrete resurfacing is an inexpensive, practical, and enticing patio restoration alternative.

Many other construction materials are generally expensive these include wood, brick, and stone, but not concrete.

The average cost to resurface 100 square feet of concrete is $400. Less expensive projects can run as little as $300, while more expensive ones are about $500. The price per square foot can range between $3 and $5.

We are talking in terms of product availability, the price of the product on the counter, durability of the product, and the amount you will be charged for installation in case you choose to have a professional do the renovation project for you.

But if you are psyched up, you could pull out a fine resurfacing job by yourself if you choose to, but of course, with the help of an extra hand. It will not only give you a pleasant experience but will also help you cut down on expenses.

Concrete, a mix of sand, gravel, and water and cement resurfacing products, are readily available, making them more affordable. Concrete will give you a value of between 10-20 years, depending on maintenance when properly mixed and properly applied.

Nothing is expensive when you badly desire it.

    What Causes Concrete To Spall

Spalling concrete is mostly caused in areas where the concrete is exposed to freeze and thawing conditions.

    Here’s what happens:

Water gets absorbed into the concrete capillaries .

When that water freezes inside the concrete, it expands causing microscopic damage just under the surface of the concrete.

Eventually this damaged concrete starts to pop off the surface after repeated freeze and thawing cycles.

    How Durable And Long

How to Resurface A Pool Deck, Driveway or Patio – Part 1

When an overlay is applied properly and well-protected by a sealer or coating, it should last a lifetime, even under heavy foot or vehicle traffic. The key is to reapply the sealer if it begins to show some wear. Otherwise, wear patterns may begin to show, especially in colored surfaces. For more information, see Concrete Overlay Maintenance.

The SpreadStone kits come with most of the tools you need , and the coats come pre-mixed and ready to pour and roll on. We found this YouTube tutorial very helpful. It took us about three days to resurface our 300-square foot patio with ample breaks for work and parenting. We could have easily had it done in two days if we had started earlier the first day.

Whats included in the kit: Primer, Base Coat, Accent Coat, Clear Sealer, Stone Texture Roller, 1/4 Grout Line Stencil Tape

What you will need: 3/8-1/2 paint rollers , paint tray

Here are the steps for resurfacing a concrete patio:

    • Clean and prep the space. This includes power washing the surface, sealing any larger cracks or holes with Quikrete, and taping and covering areas around the concrete area you intend to resurface.
    • Primer. The first coat in the kit is a primer coat that you will roll onto the entire surface with a paint roller. Like all of the color coats, it doesnt matter if it looks perfectly even, as each steps coat will cover and correct the imperfections of the coat before it. It will take 1-2 hours to dry before you can continue with the next step.
    • Optional: If you want to include faux grout lines or a stencil pattern, you can layer that on after this coat has dried and cured completely. The tape or stencils will stay on until after the accent coat is applied.

The accent coats are applied using a special texture roller included in the decorative concrete resurfacing kit
