How to Build Your Own Gas Fire Pit

The top trend in outdoor living space design over the past few years has been adding a fire pit according to the ASLA . This speaks to our nations general trend of extending our indoors to the outdoors that weve been seeing in the industry.

So regardless of whether you choose to incorporate a wood-burning fire pit or an easy and safe gas-burning fire pit, either one will provide years of enjoyment for you and your family.

Do I Need A Burner Pan For My Gas Fire Pit

Yes and No.

For natural gas users, a burner pan is recommended- but not necessary. A burner pan will not only keep your burner supported within your enclosure, but it will also reduce the amount of fire pit media you need to use. A properly mounted fire pit pan can greatly increase the life and performance of your fire pit burner ring, while also making future maintenance of your fire pit easy.

For liquid propane applications, a burner pan is necessary. LP applications require an air mixer to operate, in order to ensure the highest level of performance and safety. You must also provide adequate space around the air mixer underneath the burner pan, to ensure that unburned propane falloff does not settle below the pan.

How Does Your Fire Pit Ignite

How do you want to light your fire pit? Some models come with electronic ignition others you light with a match. Kameon says she has always used manual ignition fire pits and recommends them for safety. You have more control. No one can accidentally put it on, she said, adding that, especially with gas powered fire pits that burn clear without the manual ignition, you might not even realize it was on during the day.

Does A Larger Fire Ring Mean A Taller Flame

Using a larger ring does not mean taller flame height. Generally a larger ring will broaden the flame and take away from the flame height. Most customers by the way think of large flame as being the height, not so much the width. To increase flame height when using a large ring the delivery of gas must be greater usually meaning larger gas orifice or valve. If delivery of gas cannot be increased, then reducing the fire ring size will increase the flame height.

The Natural Attraction Of A Stone Fire Pit

Everyone loves a fire pit. We love to be near a fire in peaceful solitude or to sit around the fire with friends and family. We love smores and hot dogs and hot sandwiches and fun desserts cooked in those nifty little sandwich cookers over an open flame. We love the feel of the warmth on a cool evening, and yes, there are those of us who even love the smell it leaves on our clothes.

All these and more are why we love fire pits. So, make sure that you plan accordingly. Make sure that you plan a feature that you will be happy with for many years. See to it that you allow plenty of space for seating and gathering together with others. And if youre custom designing a fire space, you may want to consider natural stone seating with seat walls for the sake of convenience as well as appeal and adding value to your home.

What Are Natural Gas Fire Pits Made From

Natural gas fire pits are built with sturdy material like steel, cast iron, textured concrete, and GFRC. GFRC stands for Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete and has the durability of concrete in a wide variety of colors and finishes. It can even be made to look like natural stone. These fire-resistant materials help ensure the longevity of the fire pit.

The burners come in different shapes depending on the style of the fire pit. Longer burners like linear or H-shape work well for long, narrow fire pits. The round and penta burners are common for fire bowls or fire tables.

The burner material is typically steel or sometimes brass. The brass is more expensive than the stainless steel or black steel, but it is also the most durable. Stainless steel is a good option because it has more longevity than black steel, but is still cheaper than brass.

Natural Gas Vs Propane Fire Pit Kits

One of the first steps of choosing a gas fire pit is selecting a fuel type: natural gas or propane. The decision will likely come down to whether you have an existing natural gas connection in your home, in which case a natural gas fire pit probably makes the most sense. Homeowners without an existing gas line can still have one installed, but it requires hiring a professional to plumb for natural gas. Those homeowners may find it easier to use a propane fire pit that runs on portable propane tanks, though they need to be refilled periodically. The cost of natural gas and propane are relatively similar and vary depending on prices in your area, so availability and portability should be the biggest factors you consider.

How Large Should My Gas Line Be For My Fire Pit

This is not an easy question to answer due to the numerous variables involved. The first major item is the size of the fire pit to be installed- or Btu input requirements for the appliance. Other factors such as gas pressure, length of run, elbows, or other hardware that may affect gas flow must be looked at figured in calculation. Also what is commonly forgotten are other appliances connected to the gas line that will take away gas from the fire pit. We have minimum recommendations for each fire pit in our catalog and in the Support section of website however we strongly recommend working with your dealer or plumber so they can account for all the factors to ensure proper gas delivery.

Fire Pit Fuel: Gas Wood Or Propane

White Mountain Hearth By Empire Carol Rose 48

Think about your preferred fuel type. Options generally include natural gas, propane and wood. According to Jackie Hirschhaut, the VP of public relations and marketing for the International Casual Furnishings Association, fire pits’ most popular fuel sources are natural gas and propane. Propane is easy to buy, inexpensive, comes in portable tanks, doesn’t make a mess to install and burns clean. Many propane fire pits also equip temperature control and are easy to light, says Elle Meager, the founder of Outdoor Happens.

If you go with a plumbed gas-fired fire pits, which Hilliard said many of her clients choose for ecological and aesthetic reasons, you need to be sure that a gas line can be piped and plumbed to the desired location by a professional.

While depending on where you live you might not be able to have a wood fire pit, I’m a fan of wood. There’s something more authentic about it, and if you have kids, it’s easier to get them involved in the fire pit experience by helping collect wood and twigs from the yard for the pit and eventually letting them help to get the fire started. Woodfire pits also tend to be cheaper, according to Meager, and you can use charcoal in most wood fire pits, which can create long-lasting heat as the charcoal tends to burn longer than wood, similar to a grill.

What Fuel Type Do You Want To Use

It should be evident which gas type you’re going to use, but there are a few exceptions. If your home is supplied with Natural Gas, but you don’t have a gas line already installed at the fire pit location, it may be a better option to go with a Liquid Propane tank.

On the other hand, if you don’t want to worry about running out of fuel or refilling a Propane tank, Natural Gas may be the better choice.

Periodically check the gas valve and burner to make sure nothing is blocked and everything is working properly. A professional inspection of the gas line and other gas components is also important to make sure everything stays safe and in good working order. It’s best to have these inspections yearly, but it is especially important to have everything checked if you wish to hook up to an old existing gas line.
