Use Tarps If Covers Are Not Available

How to Restore your Teak Patio Furniture

Patio covers can be a little expensive, so I would understand if you were reluctant about purchasing one. Luckily tarps are cheaper and also work well at protecting patio furniture from the elements.

Just like covers, tarps can trap moisture, so make sure you choose something that is breathable. I highly recommend using vinyl tarps, although plastic ones can also be used.

Also, make sure you secure the tarps well with ropes, so they dont get blown away by rain or boisterous wind.

That said, patio covers are still better than tarps when it comes to protecting outdoor furniture, but I will always choose one than using nothing.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Patio furniture covers

Take out a day and go shopping for a beautiful set of patio covers. There is no better way to protect your patio furniture from direct sunlight, rain, and dust. Cover your patio furniture when it is not in use or you have a bad weather report. Prevention can help you save precious time and protect your heavy investment done in the patio furniture.

  • The covers will also add a nice pop of colors and make your garden look more appealing from that room window when you look outside.
  • Patio covers can be a bit costly but not as much as the damage which will be caused otherwise so do keep in mind that you do good research on them regarding their quality.
  • Measure your patio furniture very accurately so that the custom covers fit properly and are not loose enough to fly away and left out exposed to elements of nature.

Get rid of mildew

Mildew is a patch of white or grey fungus that builds upon the surface due to moisture. Not only does it look disgusting but also gives out a bad smell. So make sure you keep an eye on it by smelling the fabric of your cushions. Mildew should not be given a chance to grow as it can become an issue because of which you may even need to throw away your pillows or cushions.

What you should do is:

  • 3/4th cup bleach

Instructions:

Step 1: Mix them together and make a cleaning solution.

Step 2: Always test on a small area before you go big. Once you think you are good to go spray the solution on the fabric parts of your patio furniture.

Cleaning Wicker And Wood Furniture

Keep in mind that wicker needs to be hosed down every few weeks to prevent the build-up of dust, especially in crevices and other hard-to-clean places. Wood, on the other hand, needs to be wiped down regularly but it still needs care to prevent the buildup of dirt, grime, and other potentially harmful stains. Never use a power washer on your wooden and wicker patio furniture, no matter how tempting it may be!

Never clean wood and wicker with harsh or aggressive chemicals. When cleaning wood, it is best to use a very mild oil-based soap mixed with some warm water. Another approach is to mix about ¼ cup of ammonia and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a quart of warm water. This can be used on wicker as well, but it needs to be diluted. You may need to use a toothbrush to get into the weave of wicker. You can also clean weather-beaten wood with dry dishwashing detergent rubbed on the surface with a soft brush, followed by conditioning with vegetable oil.

Although resin wicker outdoor furniture is built to resist most weather conditions, it can still suffer accidents at the hands of people and pets. Sitting in a chair incorrectly can put a strain on parts not meant to handle the weight, and standing on them can potentially loosen pieces. Additionally, if you have a teething or nervous chewing dog, there is no limit to the amount of damage they can do. However, all is not lost. Here are some tips on how you can repair damage to your resin wicker.

Step 1 – Determine the Full Extent of Damage

Check the piece of wicker furniture over carefully to see if the frame is damaged as well as the wicker weaving. If there is no frame damage, proceed to the next step. If the frame is bent or scratched, straighten it back into place and repaint any damage with an outdoor metallic paint that matches the original color.

In the event that there is rust where the old paint was scratched away, it is important that you remove it first with a wire brush, and then sand the area before you add a new topcoat.

Step 2 – Clean the Chair

Step 3 – Use a Resin Epoxy to Re-glue the Loose Wicker Strips

Step 4 – Buy New Resin Strips and Reweave Them

Step 5 – Paint if Necessary
