Best For Cooking: Barebones Living Cowboy 23 Fire Pit & Grill

Outdoor Fire Pit Ideas | The Home Depot

Barebones

  • Outdoor storage not recommended

For a fire pit that doubles as a grill, we recommend the Barebones Cowboy Fire Pit. This 25-inch fire pit not only is the perfect evening fire starter but it also comes with an adjustable-height grill grate that makes it easy to cook right over the flames. You can rotate the half-circle grate, mounted on a track system, over the pit, as needed. The manufacturer offers a variety of cast iron and steel cooking accessories.

This fire pit is crafted from solid steel, with a high-temperature coating, and three legs support its fairly simple design. Handles on either side make the grill compact and light enough to bring with you camping, or to move to a covered location for storage, as the manufacturer recommends.

Size: 25 x 25 x 14.25 inches | Material: Steel | Fuel Type: Wood or charcoal | Features: Adjustable height grilling grate

Our best overall pick is the Hampton Bay Piedmont Steel Fire Pit, a freestanding steel fire pit with mesh sides that make the flames visible from all around. As an additional feature, an included cooking grate allows you to grill right over the flames. If youre looking for a fire pit that doesnt produce much smoke, consider the Solo Stove Bonfire, whose modern stainless steel design results in more complete combustion.

Our Top Pick Is The Hampton Bay Piedmont Steel Fire Pit

  • Includes spark screen and poker

  • Outdoor storage not recommended

The SINGLYFIRE Fire Pit is an inexpensive freestanding fire pit with an extremely simple design. The shallow steel bowl is mounted on four sturdy legs, and its built-in log grate ensures that air can circulate around the wood. The bowl is coated with a high-temperature paint for durability, and the package includes a mesh spark screen, and a poker to tend the fire.

This fire pit’s bowl isnt as large as other options, but it can still hold up to 120 pounds, allowing you to pile it high with wood. Its ideal for cooking smores or just sitting around on a summer night. The manufacturer recommends storing it in a covered location to prevent rusting. Thanks to its 11 pounds, it is extremely easy to move it indoors.

Natural Gas Fire Pits

Sunnydaze Decor 36 in. Round Steel Wood Burning Fire Pit Kit with ...

If you dont want to use wood and you have a natural gas line in your home, you could choose a natural gas fire pit. Using a typically cheaper fuel than propane, this can save you money, though if you dont have access to natural gas youll have to go with propane to avoid an expensive gas line installation. In most cases, you wont find natural-gas-only fire pits, but rather propane fire pits with an included converter.

Best Fire Pits For 2022

Solo Stove Ranger: Squat, cylindrical, compact and made from stainless steel, the Solo Stove Ranger appears simple at first glance. Tucked away inside this pit, though, is the same sophisticated airflow system that its larger sibling, the Solo Stove Yukon, has. The system is designed to enable fire in the pit to burn hotter and consume more of its wood fuel.

We can confirm that the Ranger delivers on these promises. It starts fast, with its logs aflame in just 5 minutes, and it burns for hours. The fires we started in the Ranger also burned with incredible ferocity. The flames inside the pit focused into an impressive rolling vortex. Despite the conflagration, the Ranger emitted very little smoke.

The Ranger does have a few drawbacks. Its compact size means it can’t accept standard 15-inch firewood logs. It’s also not the best for large groups or families. More than two people roasting marshmallows at once quickly becomes a crowd.

The Kingso 22-inch fire pit is small and has poor airflow.

Kingso Outdoor Fire Pit : Though it’s a bestseller on Amazon, we don’t recommend purchasing the Kingso Outdoor Fire Pit. Its small size feels cramped. And since airflow throughout the small fire pit unit is poor, we consistently had difficulty both starting fires and keeping them lit inside this pit. It doesn’t come with a protective cover, either.

A good fire pit will ignite in minutes and stay lit for hours.

Best Propane: Hampton Bay Park Canyon 35 In Steel Propane Fire Pit Kit

Home Depot

  • Wide rim serves as table

  • Controls are hard to access

A propane-powered fire pit is convenient, and the Hampton Bay Park Canyon is an attractive choice that also provides built-in storage for the fuel tank. The base can accommodate a liquid propane tank of up to 30 pounds, and its stylish design looks good on any patio. The design is a combination of resin and steel, and it can heat a space up to 215 square feet due to an impressive 50,000-BTU output.

This fire pit offers adjustable heat, although it can be somewhat tricky to access those controls, located inside the base. It comes with white fire glass you can use to fill the bowl on top of the table. The wide rim around the 35-inch top is ideal for holding beverages or plates. Plus, the covered pit can function as a side table when it’s not in use.

Best Table: Yardbird Rectangular Fire Pit Table

Yardbird

  • Includes natural gas conversion kit

  • Automatic fire starter button

  • More fire glass needed

The Yardbird Fire Pit Table does double duty in your outdoor living space, serving as a propane fireplace and a convenient coffee table. While this particular design is a 61.5 x 32-inch rectangle, you also can opt for a square or round shape, whatever best fits your space. This fire pit is crafted from commercial-grade aluminum, and a door on the base allows you to store a propane tank inside.

This fire pit table has a brushed stainless steel burner tray, and while the product includes clear glass rock beads, you likely need more glass to fill up the center. The table has an automatic starter button that runs on AAA batteries, and you can adjust the intensity of the flame. The lid covers up the burner tray when not in use, and the package includes a natural gas conversion kit. The manufacturer also offers a glass guard, sold separately.

  • No carrying handles

For a large grill surface perfect for steaks, veggies, or smores, the Cast Mater Bon 2000 is the smokeless fire pit to get. Its 19-inch-diameter grill grate fits right over the top of the fire pit. The grate is designed to work with this structure, unlike some options that have universal rather than custom accessories.

It can be tricky to stoke the fire and get larger flames, something many people want when cooking on an open fire however, the design keeps the smoke under control. Air vents at the bottom bring in oxygen for a fire and lead to better use of the wood. Included is a charcoal grate you can place at the bottom of the fire pit to use that oxygen while maintaining airflow from underneath. This fire pit is technically portable and comes with a carrying case. But without carrying handles, it is tough to move around easily.

Best Budget: Inno Stage Smokeless Fire Pit

  • Lacks accessories

This smokeless fire pit from INNO STAGE is a fantastic value, even for a large size. It comes in three sizes and two colors, stainless steel and painted black. Patio Heaters Are Discounted Buy Them To Extend Summer And Enjoy Fall

Several patio heaters are on sale now. Prices go up in fall.

Its may be hot outside now but August is when you should be thinking about how to prolong that summer warmth into late September and even throughout October/November. Think patio heaters — tabletop for small dining areas and tall for conversation groupings. Well let you in on a little secret: Prices are expected to rise when fall arrives. Some heaters also are discounted now and will return to full price between Aug. 31 and Sept. 30 when the chill in the air arrives and people start ordering heaters en masse. So, the logical conclusion is to buy before prices go up.

Be sure to assess your outdoor space. If youre entertaining around a patio table, a compact and portable tabletop unit may meet your needs. These put out 10,000 to 11,000 BTUs and raise the air temperature around the table 10-25 degrees Fahrenheit in a limited area around the table.

If you want to provide comfort in a conversation area — about 1,500 to 2,000 square feet — consider one or two tall patio heaters. You may need more if youre warming a larger space, for example, a pool area. Tall heaters put out 40,000 to 48,000 BTUs. One heater will probably heat 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of covered space or a 20-foot diameter area of uncovered space.

If you want something commercial, youll pay $2,000 and up. For a home unit youll pay about $100 and up. Remember, these prices are expected to rise when fall arrives.
