Wooden Pergola With Clear Roof

Why Pergola Motorized Louvers Matter

How to install clear roofing over #Pergola DIY

Selecting a motorized pergola is a big decision for homeowners. As with any home renovation, it will be a permanent part of your home. Choosing a pergola with high-quality, well-engineered louvers in its auto pergola roof can make a huge difference in whether your outdoor living space truly seals out the rain. The Azenco R-Blade features insulated dual-walled louvers, and their benefits are twofold. First, the dual-wall design ensures zero water penetration when the roof is closed, so no annoying drips on your dinner party below. Second, they are insulated, which means they can dampen noise. With uninsulated louvers, the sound of rain hitting the roof can interrupt conversation and disrupt the tranquility of a beautiful rainstorm. The R-Blades insulated dual-wall louvers absorb the noise of rainfall on the aluminum roof, so you can enjoy peace and quiet outside in any weather.

Speaking of noise, be sure to consider the sound emitted when operating a motorized louvered roof. The R-Blades motor is whisper-quiet, so you wont hear jolting sounds when operating it.

An Ideal Day Beneath Your Automatic Louvered Pergola

The intuitive smart features built into our R-Blade Pergola will truly make the most of your outdoor living space. Just imagine spending a full day under your R-Blade pergola. Start the morning with the roof fully open as you enjoy the soft morning light with a cup of coffee. As the sun creeps higher, you adjust the louvers for partial shade. Once the sun peaks, you completely close the louvers to block out the most heat-intensive rays of the day. After lunch, you hear theres going to be rain, but you stay reclined in your chaise knowing the integrated R-Blade rain sensor will detect the first drop and close the roof. As the rain intensifies, the insulated dual-walled louvers dampen the noise of the raindrops, and channel the water away while you stay perfectly dry. Now, sneak a look at your neighbor rushing into the rainstorm to keep their patio umbrella from flying away or to crank in their retractable awning. When the rain subsides, the evening falls and built-in LED lights come up as the insect screens lower for a pest-free dinner. After dessert, you feel a chill coming on, and with a flip of the infrared heater, the night carries on in pure comfort. As you head to bed for the night, you spot the neighbors out lashing down their sunshade and you remember the forecast called for an overnight storm as you drift off to sleep knowing the R-Blades wind sensor will open the roof to protect your investment even in hurricane-force winds.

What Supplies Are Needed:

*First you must have your pergola built, and figure out the size of covered area you are doing then buy accordingly.

* POLYCARBONATE CLEAR ROOFING PANELS* WOOD SOLID ROOF PANEL CLOSURE STRIP* TUFTEX WHITE GALVANIZED SELF-DRILLING ROOFING SCREWS* SAW* PAINT AND SUPPLIES IF YOU NEED TO PAINT.

Since our pergola was white, we painted all the closure strips to match.

Now it is time to install. Looking back, we wish we did more closure strips to help with the corrugated panels longevity.

Installing the panels it was so hard to decide how long to do them in the front. You can see here the three different lengths.

We went with the first one, honestly for looks. It probably wasnt the best option for all the rain we have and if we did the longer it would be less rain on the deck front. I do have to say I still dont regret it.

Now the install, make sure to predrill each hole before using the screws. Make sure to get it right the first time so you dont have any unwanted holes. You DO need to overlap so take that into account.

Installing A Clear Pergola Roof Was The Best Decision Ever It Has Turned Our Side Yard Is A Three Season Patio That We Can Enjoy In Any Weather

We love our new patio pergola, but the only thing that could make it better was installing a clear pergola roof. Now even if it decides to rain for an entire month , we can still enjoy gatherings on the patio.

Adding a roof to a pergola seems like a big deal, but we partnered with the Home Depot to make it easy! Now we cannot wait for another storm so we can test out our new clear pergola roof.

After installing the SunTuf corrugated roofing on the kids outdoor playhouse, I knew I wanted to use it again. It looks so nice and is absolutely DIY friendly.

But my favorite part is that it lets the light in but blocks out the UV rays. Blocking UV rays on the patio means all our patio furniture will last longer. No more fading and sun bleaching! And we can enjoy the patio even if the weather decides to rain out another of our parties!

The biggest decision we had was whether to use the same Solar Gray color on the patio as we had on the playhouse roof. I love that the playhouse has the extra shading so the kids can play in it all summer long and it stays a bit cooler.

Originally I had planned on using the shading color for the patio pergola too. Then I realized the patio is completely shaded by the house in the late afternoon on and our neighbors trees block most of the direct sun in the morning, so we would only have direct sun for a small portion of the day.

Diy Flat Pergola Roof

See-Through Roof For Your Pergola | Cover Your Pergola

I love the pergola in my backyard. I like the light that the open ceiling provides. But I dont like getting rained on when Im under it. So I found a solution that lets me have a cover from the rain and still see the sky above clear polycarbonate roofing panels. Then all I had to do was figure out how to put a roof on a flat pergola, and I was all set!

A while ago I posted some waterproof cover ideas for pergolas because I was looking for some inspiration for covering the pergola over the grill area in my backyard.

It isnt an area that I use that much when its raining, so you might be wondering why I need a waterproof cover for it.

After every rain, the countertop and grill are covered with leaves and bits of flowers that have to be washed off before you can use the grill again. Which makes me not want to use the grill that much

Plus, it would be nice not to get soaked if a downpour happens to come through right when Im cooking .

All that to say, I finally made a decision on what roofing to put up and got it installed. And Im really happy with the way it turned out.

What I ended up going with is the clear corrugated polycarbonate roofing panels that you can install right over the top of your existing pergolawhich is exactly what I wanted.

They use pressure-treated lumber and milled brackets to construct an attractive canopy over a garage door. Many people, they say, disregard garage door entrances, but with a little know how you can add some architectural splendor to this typically generic entryway point.

The Workbench Magazine provides the means to assemble a pergola awning. This is a different style option, obviously, with the structure hanging over a back patio door rather than standing on support poles. An ornamental and attractive accouterment you can add to your home, it may be less practical and functional than other options weve seen.

Is The Deck Protected From Rain/snow With The Covered Pergola

For the most part it does. We dont bring in any of our furniture or cushions. I talked above about having the polycarbonate panels stick out more and the front of the deck would be protected more so it depends on that. Really our deck stays protected year round with just a little rain on the edges.

Metal Louvers Are Best For A Pergola Roof

Polygal Roof Panels for Pergolas

Whether choosing mechanized or manually adjusted louvers, the material the roof is made from is an important consideration. Marble and stone are best left to the ancients. Wood can impart a rustic or Old-World feel, but is prone to rotting over time. Vinyl or plastic will look great at first, but will eventually fade and distort. Metal louvers, like aluminum, are the ideal material for a pergola roof. Aluminum is strong and lightweight, making it possible to automate their controls with quiet electric motors. Protected with high-quality powder coating, a metal roof will seal out the corrosion-inducing rain, ice and snow to last a lifetime.

Are You Creating A Flat Roof Pergola Or A Pitched Roof Pergola

When thinking of the pitch, or slope, of a pergola most people tend to envision either flat or a medium pitch, however, every pergola most have a slight pitch to allow for water drainage. Pergolas can actually be created to any angle however, the pergola style tends to be low pitch roof and a minimum 5 degree pitch is considered to be normal best practise

Did you know that the steeper the slope of your pergola the more self cleaning it will naturally be? The steeper the pitch the better the rain and water run off will be which in turn cleans your roof better and reduces the chance of direct/leaves settling on top

Slope roof pergolas or slanted roof pergolas are 10 degrees plus which creates a distinctive silhouette and can be great in complementing the angle on your house. This means pitched roof pergolas tend to be popular for lean to pergolas that are against a house wall or on a back door patio.

In comparison, flat roof pergolas are between 5 to 10 degrees so are the typical choice when you are creating a freestanding pergola in your garden. This is because the flatter slope can look more natural on top of a decking or patio area and be a more subtle natural shape in your garden!

Options For Transparent Pergola Roofs

Traditionally, a pergola is an outdoor structure that consists of four vertical poles supporting an open lattice of wooden beams. Normally, the structure provides minimal shade or protection from rain.

When a pergola doubles as an arbor for creeping plants such as grapevines, you may receive a measure more shade from direct sunlight. If you’d like to incorporate a pergola-style building into your garden but hope to use the pergola as shelter from the rain, you can update the traditional pergola to incorporate transparent roofing materials. If you live in an area where rainfall is heavy and the sunlight is scant, a transparent roof will deliver maximum sunshine and let you remain outdoors through the showers.

Screw On The Roofing Panels

Then youre ready to start attaching your panels.

Put up the first panel so that its lying straight across the horizontal supports and the last raised groove is running on top of the vertical strip .

Make sure that you have the proper side up. There should be a label on the panel that tells you what side that is. Remove the label before attaching the panel.

Since my panel was a little bigger than my pergola roof, I let it overhang on both sides. That way if my roof isnt perfectly square , I can trim the panels later to end at the edge of the pergola roof line.

Then use a quarter inch drill bit to drill holes through the panel where the screws are going to go. These screws will be installed in the raised part of the horizontal supports and along the vertical supports.

You dont need a screw in every raised section of the horizontal closure strip.

For the strips that run along the outside edges of your pergola roof, put a screw in every other raised section.

For the closure strips that are in the middle of your pergola roof, put a screw in every third raised section.

Then screw in the screws with rubberized washers using the socket bit.

The washer should be resting firmly on the plastic roofing panel, but not tight enough to cause a dimple in the panel.

When you get to the edge where the next panel will join, dont put the screws in yet.

Put up the next panel so that the first raised section of the new panel overlaps the last raised section of the old panel.

Preparing The Acrylic Sheets

A Covered Pergola Is A MUST â Here’s 5 Reasons Why | Cover Your Pergola

Pre-drilling in wood might be important but optional. When it comes to acrylic its a must.

Stack all the sheets on a flat surface making sure all the sides are flush. Now, draw a line alongside, 2 cm away from the edge. Starting from 2 cm away from the end mark points right between the line and the edge. Make a note of the spacing between the points in order to avoid drilling into a screw when putting down the finishing battens. In this case, it was around 20cm.

Now using a metal drill bit, drill and countersink screw holes for mounting screws. Acrylic will crack if you don’t!
