Steps in building a DIY fire pit with custom capstone

Creating your blueprints. Now that you know what materials you will be using its time to begin putting the design on paper. Since you know the design will be based around a 55-gallon barrel we can begin by drawing the dimensions to scale on graph paper or in a cad program.

The barrel I used has dimensions of 23.5 x 34.5 which means that the inside edge of the foundation needs to be larger than that. Let us start by drawing the 2×4 forms we will be setting in place to pour the foundation.

Felton Hills Fire Pit

Fire Pit Capstone

The Felton Hills Residence had many facets to the project including 3-rear porches, stair cases, a winding staircase to a jacuzzi, a front entry near a koi pond and more stairs. All of the wall caps including the fire pit cap were a Mesa Beige with a light sand finish which is one of Tom Ralston Concrete’s specialty finishes. Idaho Silver and Gold Quartzite Flagstone was the hardscape of choice and the sand washed finish with the Mesa color blends perfectly with the Idaho flagstone and the Mt. Moriah Ledger stone used on the vertical surfaces. The tile for the fire pit was exquisite and chosen by owner Lori Scher. The selection for the glass was a bit complex: 35% Amber #2, 35% Amber #4, 15% Clear 6% blue, 6% red, and 3% gold. See Patio images.

Stone Cap For Fire Pits: Uses And Materials

The stone cap for fire pits is an extra protection for their retaining walls. From a technical standpoint, it encircles the hearth to avoid unnecessary damage to the inside surface which bears high temperatures all the time. Although fire pits dont really require a cap to be functional, many professionals still recommend its inclusion for both aesthetics and practicality.

Just like the pavers themselves, the stone cap needs to be a durable, porous, and heat-resistant material. On the market, you may find pavers that are specifically fabricated for this purpose like the kiln-fired brick but normal pavers are not out of the question. As such, all the following materials can be used:

As the name suggests, the stone cap is usually sold in its natural-stone state, but its installation also allows for creative decisions that range from shape and width to custom edges. Check out the pictures below:

Chatham Flagstone Fire Pit

The Chatham fire pit is probably one of our most elaborate fire pits with a seating area. As many as 12 people can fit into the round which will usually serve to generate one anecdote after another. The project is located in Bonny Doon CA and sits outside a small octagon cabin. The project was a Tom Ralston design that has an old world feel to it. At night the stars are bright due to being so far away from city or freeway lights. Because the circular seats are battered back it provides a comfortable slope where one can easily tilt and rest their head to gaze at the stars and see various constellations drift by. The Sage colored concrete is a perfect backdrop for the Three Rivers Flagstone that was used in the fire pit cap, the outside veneer and cap of the seatwall, and the steps that lead to the fire pit. When the fire goes down and lights go out there is still the Lumi Louvers that will glow and serve as guides for anyone walking to the house above.

Mark The Pit Location

  • Make sure all the joints between the blocks are tight and the front and back edges line up. Using a spade, mark a circle in the ground about an inch outside the perimeter of the ring.
  • Take note of how many stones make up the ring, then remove them and set them aside.
  • If the blocks you are using are interlocking, remove any tongues on the bottom of the first-course blocks so they will lie flat in the trench. Chip them off with the tail of a brick hammer.

Here Is How I Figured Out How To Diy A Fire Pit Capstone

1 | Choose the bluestones you want to use. I looked over all the square and rectangular stones to find ones with similar coloring and thickness The rectangular pieces I chose where cut down to 12 squares before their isosceles trapezoidal cuts were made. After choosing the stones, I brought them home to mark them, and this is where the vision really started to come to life!

2 | Make a template of your fire pit. Just like with kitchen countertops, measuring is not enough. Go the extra mile and make a template so that your capstone is sure to be perfect.

I made a template with craft paper that I laid across the fire pit and then outlined the exterior and interior circles with chalk. I measured the inside and outside circles and double checked to make sure my markings were accurate.

I actually ended up doing this twice after doing a whole lot of math and online pie chart creating didnt work out quite right, and coming back to my original plan. I really should have sent this problem to my engineer-father-in-law who would have figured it out in a snap!

3 | Divide up the template into equal parts. I allowed for a 2 overhang on the exterior of the firepit, and needed 14 stones .

The stone yard had given me a soap stone pencil that I used to mark the stones the soapstone just wipes off when you are done, but is less likely to lift away as easily as regular chalk does.

It was well worth the extra $12 to make the last piece of this puzzle come out right!

Lay And Level The First Course

Necessories 52 in. Grand Fire Pit Chiseled Cap
  • Place the first block in the ring. Using a 2-foot level, check that it sits level both side to side and front to back. Where the block is too high, tap it down with a rubber mallet. Where it’s too low, shim it slightly with a handful of patio base. Make sure this first block is perfectly level and positioned correctly in the trench before moving on.
  • Lay another block next to the first one. Butt the sides together tightly and line up the front and back edges. Using the first block as a reference, level the second block side to side and front to back.
  • Lay the rest of the blocks in the trench in this manner until the ring is complete and all the blocks you counted earlier are used. Make sure each block is perfectly leveled and lined up tight with its neighbor before moving on to the next one. Using a 4-foot level, occasionally check level across the ring.
  • A small hit with a mallet can make a big adjustment work slowly and carefully, block by block.

Fire Pit Parts: An Overview

A built-in fire pit is a glorified campfire, with sturdy walls of stone that help contain the flames and heat. That’s especially important in the parts of the country where there’s a risk of brush fires. So the first task in building any fire pit is checking local codes on open flames. The pit must be located far from overhanging trees, the house, and any other flammable structure.

To make building stone walls easier, you can use blocks made from cast concrete and molded to look like real stone . They’re flat on the top and bottom so they stack neatly, and some interlock for added strength. Glue them together with masonry adhesive. Choose a block with angled sides, meant to form curves when butted against each other. The optimal size for a fire pit is between 36 and 44 inches inside diameter. That will create enough room for a healthy fire but still keep gatherers close enough to chat.

As an added precaution, the fire pit should be lined with a thick steel ring like the ones used for park campfires. These protect the concrete in the blocks from the heat, which can cause them to dry out and break down prematurely.

Pavers You Should Never Use

Its important to remind you how crucial heat resistance is. Thats why non-porous pavers like porcelain and travertine can never be utilized to build a fire pit or retaining wall. If you do that, the heat that stores up on the inside wont have anywhere to go, thus cracking and exploding your project.

With that said, you can see how a professional crew is essential to ensure a long-term investment. Any kind of paver installation is tricky and takes careful steps before coming into fruition. Why worry about calculations when you can leave all the specifics for experts?

Create A Level Trench For The Blocks

  • Using a spade, dig a straight-sided trench, 12 inches deep and as wide as one block, within the circle marked out on the ground. Then dig down 6 inches in the area encircled by the trench.
  • Lay the ring of blocks in the trench to see if all the pieces fit in a circle. If not, dig more to widen the trench. Remove blocks.
