Installing the 2×6 shade elements perpendicularly on the support beams can be done in several ways. First, you can notch the shade elements and fit them between the support beams, or place them over the beams without cutting them out.
Irrespective of the case, use a tape measure to make the cuts accurately. Lock the cross-beams into place, by toenailing them with appropriate screws, after drilling pilot holes.

As far as painting goes, you should at least paint the wood roof supports before installing them because once the roof is attached it will be very hard to paint, and impossible to paint the top .

- Corrugated roof panels we used 8x 26 wide panels at 12 lengths from Home Depot
- Horizontal plastic closure strips, packs of 6 we used 8 packs of 6 to cover our 4 roof supports at 16 long each support
- 2×2 wood roof supports we used 8x 8 lengths, but you could use 4x 16 lengths, or whatever length you need for your project to at least create 4 roof supports across the top
- 1.5 Decking screws
- 1.5 Fastener Screws
Attach Lattice To Finish The Construction

Prime the columns, and then paint them with a good-quality exterior trim paint. Dont use paint on the rest of the DIY pergola instead, roll and brush the wood portions with solid-color stain.
Cut and nail the 1×4 fascia strips flush to the top of the beams and in between each pair of tails. Next, screw the 5/4 lattice strips across the rafter tops, letting them project 3 in. past the fascia. Evenly space them across each section. Add more if youd like to increase the shade below.
Now cut the sub-base pieces from treated 2×4. Screw the corners together with 3-in. deck screws. If you havent already done so, fit the patio stones back against the footings and glue the subbase to the patio surface. Then screw the molded base to the sub-base and caulk the seams with acrylic caulk.

Transfer your mark completely around the post using a combination square thats set from the bottom of the post. Cut the post with a 10-teeth-per-inch wood blade in your jigsaw. Youll need a fresh blade for every post you cut. We found the jigsaw a lot safer, quieter and less dusty than a circular saw. This composite polymer is only about 1/2 in. thick but pretty hard, so expect to eat up a new blade on each column.
Note: To make cutting the columns easier, lay them on sandbags or mulch bags to keep them from rolling or vibrating as you cut.

If you are digging, auguring, or trenching for any project you want to make sure you locate any utilities first. We knew we had a gas line running in the area so we had it located and flagged. This was to make sure that we didnât hit the gas line when auguring our holes for the posts.
Cut wood according to build plan
I cut my wood after staining, but had to go back and touch up the cut ends. If you use our plans or come up with your own build plan. You can can everything to size first . Or if your not 100% on your plan or if you have concerns of how level/square the house/post brackets are you are tying into, you can cut your wood as build to ensure a good fitment. Any bare ends due to cuts should be coated with stain afterwards to protect the wood.
Add Stain
Things to take inconsideration when staining pressure treated wood:
Ensure your wood is dry
Depending on the type of pressure treated wood you are using it may be too wet or may not accept stain. To test you can âsprinkleâ water over the wood. If the water absorbs in 5-10 mins you should be ok to stain. If the water beads and stays on top of the wood it is still too wet and needs longer to dry. We let out wood dry in our garage for 2-3 months before starting our project.

Now slip each column over its post. Strap a level near the base of each column and screw into the wood beneath. Predrill and countersink eight screw holes in the sides of the columns: four 6 in. from the bottom and four 30 in. from the bottom. Use 3-in. No. 12 exterior wood screws to anchor the columns to the wood posts. Plumb the column as you screw it to the post. Youll notice some play between the post and column. Opposing screws will tighten the entire assembly.

We wanted to share our patio pergola project in September. We bought the wood, made the plans, then the rains came! Oh my goodness, it rained and it rained and it rained! I dont ever remember that much rain in September.
The first month of fall is usually so nice. Not too hot, but still almost like summer. I think because I really wanted to build a big project outside, this year it decided to rain instead.
We managed to sneak in an evening of building and installed all the posts before it was too dark, but then when we had another day to build, it was raining again.
I am pretty sure our neighbors thought we were crazy. All we had were three half-painted posts coming out of our patio for weeks.
Thankfully, the first day of October, the rain stopped. It was cold, but I would much rather build in the cold than the heat so we got to work.
With the help of my father-in-law, we were able to get almost the entire 20 x 11 patio pergola built in 6 hours of work. Then another day of finishing up and painting and the DIY pergola is done!
