Can I Put A Fire Pit On My Wood Deck

You likely can, but please take a few precautions first. Your local building codes may specify how close the pit can be to the decking, but you should always place the fire pit atop stones or a slab like you would on grass. The fire pit base should extend 18 inches beyond the edges of the fire pit in every direction. In addition, you’ll want to keep the same 10-foot safety zone around all sides of your fire pit on your wood deck.

What Kind Of Fire Pit Should I Use On A Balcony

Balcony Fire Pit Ideas : 45 Enjoyable Small Patio Fire Pit Ideas in ...

When choosing a safe balcony size fire pit, or a mini balcony fire pit if you are space restricted, the propane option is always going to be the safest and cleanest.

In fact, you may find using a wood-burning fire pit on a balcony in your area is not an option either legally or because theyre prohibited by your HOA, property management, etc.

Im personally a fan of wood-burning fire pits almost every time but not in this situation. Even if permitted, I wouldnt consider them for balcony use, especially in an apartment or condo, due to concerns with the smoke annoying other residents, potential damage and/or discoloration to the balconys overhead cover and floor surface, and space concerns.

Regarding the space issue, from my experience you typically have to sit further back from a wood-burning fire pit due to the more intense heat they generate this leaves less room for everything else.

When choosing a propane fire pit for a balcony, especially if space is at a minimum, I like a table-type propane fire pit, where the fuel source is stored inside the fire pits base, out of the way.

Another nice feature of many table-type propane fire pits is that they can double as a functional table on your balcony when not being used to warm the space. If you dont have a lot of balcony space, fitting a table, chairs, a fire pit, and anything else could be a challenge.

What Kind Of Fire Pit Can I Use On A Balcony

A gas fire pit is an excellent option for those who have balconies. Gas fire pits are portable, so you can easily move them around your balcony or apartment and they typically use less propane than a standard patio heater.

Theres also the benefit of not having to worry about running out of fuel at inopportune moments! If you dont like the idea of using gas on your balcony because someone could get hurt if there was an accident, then consider getting one that uses electric ignition instead.

I find many propane fire pits on the market that are designed with an external tank. But I typically rule these out because they have a hose leading to the pit which presents a trip hazard.

I dont like any type of gas tank near my fire pit, so I normally exclude them from my search results.

When space is at a minimum, I like a table-type propane fire pit where the fuel source is stored inside of it.

Another major benefit of many table-type propane fireplaces is that they can be used as extra outdoor dining space when their fires stop producing heat.

What Does The Law Say About Balcony Fire Pits

How To Build a Custom-Sized Fire Pit

If you plan on installing a fire pit on your balcony, its best to check with your local codes enforcement office before doing anything.

Theyll be able to give you the necessary permits and approvals for installing an outdoor fireplace in your area. In some jurisdictions, there are restrictions about what type of fuel can be used and how big a fire is allowed.

This includes types of wood that may not be safe near homes and other combustible materials like concrete patios or green roofs where they could easily catch on fire because of their close proximity to the roofing material.

If you are unclear regarding your local laws and/or HOA/Property Management covenants, contact a fire department or HOA/property management personnel for clarification.

As an example of how common-sense rules and regulations can help keep HOA communities safe, the Community Association Underwriters of America recommends that fire pits be prohibited on balconies.

Local Fire Pit Laws And Balcony Fire Pits

During my research for this post, I found that many municipalities are taking their cue from the International Fire Code, or IFC when it comes to an open flame on residential balconies. Per the IFC site, the IFC is in use or adopted in 42 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Whats the International Fire Code ? The IFC is a comprehensive fire code establishes minimum regulations for fire prevention and fire protection systems using prescriptive and performance-related provisions. It is founded on broad-based principles that make possible the use of new materials and new system designs. International Code Council

Long story short, the code is a set of basic guidelines that can have an impact on your ability to use a balcony fire pit in your locality if local fire regulations and policies in your area are guided by the IFC.

Keep in mind that local law, HOA, and/or building management rules specific to your situation will be the final word.

The basics from the IFC regarding fire pits on balconies:

No using fire pits, grills, open flames, etc. on balconies within 10 feet of a combustible structure, unless:

  • the balcony is attached to a one or two-family dwelling . Any dwelling larger than two-family, like an apartment building or condo, may be a no-go.
  • the balcony is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system

No LP-gas containers that exceed 1 lb. gas capacity within 10 feet of a combustible structure, unless:

Which Fire Pits Give Off The Most Heat

While all fire pits generate heat, some tend to create more than others. Ordinary pits, which are also the cheapest, can put out a good amount of heat. Unfortunately they typically create a lot of smoke as well. Smokeless fire pits do reach higher temperatures since they’re designed to foster a high degree of airflow as they burn. However, in my experience, Solo Stove fire pits channel much of their heat upward. Breeo pits, on the other hand, tend to push more heat outward so you often feel their warmth more.

What Is The Best Type Of Fire Pit To Buy

The type of fire pit you should purchase depends on two main considerations. First is how much money you plan to spend. For instance, inexpensive pits are almost always basic cast-iron models that lack fancy smokeless airflow systems. The second factor to think about is how you’d like to use your pit. Simple pits provide the heat, sights and sounds of a crackling fire. They’re also fine for making s’mores and the odd hot dog. For more advanced cooking capabilities you’ll have to spend more for a pit also designed to operate as a true outdoor grill.

Why Get A Balcony Fire Pit

How to decorate a small outdoor fire pit area – Today’s Patio

A fire pit is more than just a way to keep warm, although thats the main reason to get one. Theyre great if you plan to host outdoor gatherings and are ideal as a central feature in a social space.

You generally cant cook food on a fire pit because it can cause damage and clog the pit up with food and fat. That said, smores will work just fine!

Firepits For Small Spaces

If you love firepits but have a small yard, or patio, you can still add a fire feature to your space. You will just need to be a bit creative and select firepits for small spaces rather than opting for large fireplaces or permanent firepit installations. You can also find firepits that serve more than one purpose if you are limited on square footage or prefer minimalist backyard design.

Tabletop Fire Features

Tabletop fire features sit within or on top of your patio table. This option is suitable if you want a propane firepit that you and your guests can enjoy while sipping wine and eating dinner. In addition, tabletop fire pits are a great solution if you do not want to burn wood and would prefer to have propane as your fuel source.

Steel Tabletops for Firepits

Some free-standing fire pits and bowls can also double as a patio table. Choose a wood-burning fire pit or a modern propane fire bowl and add a steel tabletop. The steel tabletop for your firepit or bowl will sit on top of your fire feature when it is not in use keeping the wood dry and giving you more serving space. Start your evening enjoying cocktails and appetizers, then remove the tabletop and roast marshmallows on the fire. This option gives you the best of both worlds and is perfect for small spaces.

Where Can I Set Up My Fire Pit

Finding the right spot for your fire pit is important for your comfort and safety. The pit should sit on a level spot to limit any likelihood of it falling over. You can place it in a grassy area, but the pit itself shouldn’t sit directly over the grass. Set it up over something that isn’t combustible, like a stone slab or some carefully arranged bricks similar to a small patio. A concrete slab is an ideal area, too. If you don’t have access to these items, you can also purchase a fire pit pad. These non-flammable, portable mats install just about anywhere. When you place your pit atop the pad, the pad shields the ground from radiating heat. Learn more fire pit safety tips with answers to your most commonly asked questions!

Wood Burning Fire Pits

Wood burning fire pits should not be used under a covered patio. Wood produces thick, toxic smoke and if theres not enough air flow, it can build up quickly and deplete the space of oxygen.

A fire pit with a wide burning area like this one needs to be used in a clear, open space.

Wood fires also produce sparks and embers, which can fly out and ignite any combustible materials close by. Its best to use a wood burning fire pit in an open area with plenty of ventilation, away from combustible materials.

Which Smokeless Fire Pit Is The Best

Small Outdoor Propane Fire Pit

From a pure smokeless performance standpoint, Solo Stove fire pits are the best. They’re the easiest to start and keep lit. They also produce the least amount of smoke and generate the most intense, eye-catching flames. That said, since Solo Stove pits push much of their heat upward, they’re not ideal for keeping seated groups comfortable on cold winter nights. And they’re not designed for cooking elaborate outdoor meals either.
