Edmontons River Valley Park System offers an array of diverse and beautiful sites for an outdoor wedding. An event license may be required to hold an outdoor wedding ceremony in a river valley park if:
- Your group is 50 people or more
- You have any set-up
- You would like to reserve any of our designated picnic sites or gazebos, the Shumka Stage or Borden Park Bandshell for your exclusive use, regardless of your group size
A license is not required to take wedding photos in a park, however, space is not guaranteed and access through an area must remain accessible to the general public.
In order to have an enjoyable, safe and stress-free event in the park and river valley system, there are some guidelines which must be adhered to in order to receive an event license.
- A Certificate of Insurance for a Minimum of $2 Million liability insurance with the City of Edmonton listed as additionally insured
- An Event Site Map indicating where the ceremony will take place
- Dates and times for use of parkland
- Alternate plans in case of bad weather or emergency situations
There are several location options within the River Valley Park system, which may be suitable for your wedding location. Additional guidelines may apply depending on the request.
Japanese Gardens Germain Park
The Japanese Gardens is a great location for an intimate wedding ceremony and/or elopement. It is available to rent form May to October, weather permitting. The garden is beautifully maintained with a peaceful theme, located in an intimate and sectioned off area of the park. The gardens can accommodate from 10 to 20 people.
Rental rates are $38+HST per hour booked, and is subject to an additional insurance fee.
Permits are given to ensure use of the garden only, therefore please keep in mind that it is in a public park. The Parks & Recreation Department will not require users of the park to vacate other areas that are in use .

What Time Is The Reception
Are you having an afternoon wedding and reception or an afternoon wedding with an evening reception? Like the time of year, the time of day will determine if lighting is needed.
- In May the sun sets approximately 8:00pm
- In June the sun sets approximately 8:30pm
- In July on the 1st. the sun sets approximately 8:30pm and by the 31st. the sun sets at about 8:00pm
- In August on the 1st. the sun sets around 8:00pm and by the 30th sun sets around 7:30pm
- In September the sunsets start at 7:30pm on the 1st and by the 30th sunset is around 6:30pm
Basically if you are having an evening wedding reception, plan on renting lighting for your tent. Tent lighting is available in many different styles from the simple pure look of our white globe lights to chandeliers and supplemental par lighting. The style of rental tent, time of day, time of year and your own personal style will help determine the best tent lighting option.Tent lighting will need at least one 20 amp circuit within 50 of the tent and should not be on the same circuit as coffee makers, your caterers food service equipment or the band or D.J..

Kenwick Wedding Gazebo Kenwick Park
The Kenwick Gazebo and Pavilion is a great location for a modest outdoor wedding ceremony. It is available to rent from May to October, weather permitting. The pavilion is positioned for a beautiful view of Lake Huron along Brights Grove Beach. The space can accommodate up to 50 people.
Rental rates are $77+HST per hour booked, and is subject to an additional insurance fee. This facility is booked at a minimum of 1 hours, and a maximum of 6 hours in one day.
Permits are given to ensure use of the Pavilion/Gazebo only, therefore please keep in mind that it is in a public park. The Parks & Recreation Department will not require users of the park to vacate other areas that are in use.
AmenitiesAmenities include hydro , and the arbor. Users can decorate modestly, however no tacks or nails can be used and all items must be removed at the end of the rental. Chairs are allowed to be brought by the licensee however, tents are not permitted.
Wedding ReservationsThe arbor is only rented out once per day for weddings. Payment is due in full at the time of booking. This pavilion can be booked up to one year in advance to hold a date. Upon approval of fees each year, staff will advise of the amount required.
Shumka Stage At Louise Mckinney Riverfront Park
The Shumka Stage is an outdoor space in Louise McKinney Riverfront Park with a covered stage that may be booked for weddings. It is in close proximity to the Chinese Garden Ting for wedding photos and may be added as an additional booking if desired.

Will There Be Bars Or Just Beverage Stations
Bars and beverage stations will need their own tables and floor space. Beverage stations and self serve bars are generally single sided and do not have staff attending them at all times. Traditional bars with a bar tender require more room than a beverage station. Your bar tender will need a work space as well as an area for additional supplies. A bar table with a riser shelf for service and a back bar will make your bar tender happy. Dont forget to add a meal in for your bar tender.
Tip: 1 buffet table for every 50 guests, 1 bar set up for every 100 guests, only about 1/3 of the guests will drink coffee
When Is Your Wedding
Mid-May through September are the most popular months for outdoor wedding receptions. Your wedding date will determine if you need to consider adding sidewall, heating or cooling option to your rental budget. During rainy months sidewall is an option you may want to consider. Mid June through September we strongly suggest that you consider using a mosquito abatement service for the comfort of you and your guests.

What Type Of Meal Is Planned
Are you having a buffet or a served meal? Buffet meals require more room than served meals. Buffet stations will require more space than a traditional long buffet as they are generally placed throughout the tent. Once the meal is over, buffet tables are generally reused for a sweets station, desserts, coffee stations, etc.. If buffet tables are being used after the meal is completed, be sure that you have extra clean linens for tables that may need them.Served meals and family style meals do not require additional space for food service, but do require more wait staff.Your caterer will be able to tell you the number and size tables they will need for food service. Your caterer may also request a prep tent or a designated prep area and extra long tables for their use. If coffee is being brewed on site be sure that the power outlet being used is not on the same circuit as the D.J., Band, or tent lighting. Coffee pots draw a lot of power.

Location: We offer three settings for your outdoor wedding ceremony
- William Bell Gazebo – located on a hilltop near the main beach of Bell Park, overlooking the beautiful Lake Ramsey. This is the largest gazebo available.
- Katherine Bell Gazebo – most popular gazebo for weddings, located between main beach of Bell Park and St. Joseph’s Hospital, includes a large decked area that overhangs the shore of Lake Ramsey. This is a stunning view and setting for photos.
- Copper Cliff Gazebo – located across from Bryston’s On the Park, Creighton Road in Copper Cliff, this gazebo is surrounded by beautifully landscaped park area, beautiful photo setting.
Need to Know:
- Book well in advance – you will need to confirm the booking by signing a Facility Agreement and Schedule that sets out terms of usage.

Suncor Agora Centennial Park
The Suncor Agora stage is a newer facility that was built in 2017-2018 in the heart of Centennial Park. It is part of a 12-year partnership with Suncor Energy, and replaced the previously well-known Dow Peoples Place.
The stage is positioned to overlook the scenic Sarnia Bay and St. Clair River waterfront and has hosted a number of recognized performers from the community, and those internationally known. Past performers including Walk Off the Earth, The Trews, Aces High, One Man Out, the Liuna Block Party, the Youth Battle of the Bands, and many more.
Amenities include a back dressing room, washrooms attached, a concession stand and storage room attached, a sound system, hydro stations, tables and chairs, and a large concrete pad in front of the stage.
