Which To Use As A Pro Vs Homeowner

Protect & Enhance Concrete Floors – Sherwin-Williams

As a pro, the best paint brand:

  • Is consistent in how it flows off my brush and roller
  • Has a color tinting system that offers great coverage as well as consistent color from gallon to gallon
  • Is one where I can count on the support and knowledge of the people selling me the paint

As a homeowner, the best paint brand:

  • Is self-priming
  • Isnt too pricey

Buy the brand that has the product that best fits your project and budget. But, its better to save up and get better paint than to paint with low-quality paint. Nobody wants to regret the money and time they spend.

Things To Consider When Shopping For Deck Paint

When shopping for deck paint, youll want to consider what type of weather your deck will be exposed to, how your deck is used, and how damaged your deck is currently. Your answers to these questions affect what types of paints or stains you should look for.

  • What weather is your deck exposed to? If you live somewhere with weather extremes, its important to find a paint or stain that is extremely durable. For instance, if you live somewhere with lots of sun, youll want to find a paint or stain that is UV-resistant to help prevent color fading. Or if you live in an area with lots of rain, you may want to consider a paint with built-in grip.
  • How is your deck used? If you live somewhere where it rains or snows and your deck has a decent amount of foot traffic, youll want to find a paint or stain with gripping qualities that is slip-resistant. Or, if you have kids who like to run around barefoot, youll want to find a stain or paint that is smooth and helps prevent splinters.
  • How damaged is your deck currently? If your deck is extremely weathered, youre going to need a stronger paint or stain with the ability to fill cracks and holes and unsightly inconsistencies. If your deck was recently painted or stained, then maybe youll want to find a paint or stain that doesnt require any sanding before use.

Paint The Porch Floor

Once the primer has dried, its time to start painting.

Start by painting two coats of your base color. I used Sherwin Williams Snowbound.

Again, use an angle brush to cut in around the edges of your porch and then use a paint roller to paint the rest of the floor.

Allow the paint to dry fully between coats. If you are painting your porch floor but not stenciling, you are done after this step!

Applying Sherwin

organick said:I am painting the exterior of the house and need to do porch floor. Its already painted and from 32 so i am sure there is lead under it somewhere. Its in good shape not peeling etc. Think its got some porch paint on it now with a little gloss to it……Whats my best bet? light sanding prime and porch paint or prime and acrylic solid porch stain? any ideas?

Mr. Paint said:Check the label before you prime. Most primers are not meant to be walked on, therefore most porch and floor paints in the industry are sold as self-priming. In California, oil-base porch paints are outlawed, so you have to use a good quality, 100% acrylic. In changing systems a little scuff-sanding and wipe-down with a damp towel would be advised.

Thats where I questioned it too. But For example SW sells porch and floor but says to use all surface primer first. SO it seems like just needs to be thr right primer?? Anyone prefer the solid acrylic solid stains?Any product rec? I tend to default to SW when in question

Bottom Line: Should You Use Valspar Or Sherwin

Now that you know how Valspar and Sherwin-Williams compare, its time to decide which paint is right for you.

To recap:

  • Both brands offer a variety of interior, exterior, and specialty paints in a range of colors. There is significant variation in price, coverage, and other factors between each brands paint lines.
  • All Valspar paints and the Sherwin-Williams HGTV Home collection are sold at Lowes, but you can also find Valspar at other local retailers.
  • Sherwin-Williams has more limited retail options and usually has to be purchased at a registered Sherwin-Williams store.
  • Sherwin-Williams paint is more expensive than Valspar, but prices vary depending on the collection and retailer.
  • Paint experts at Sherwin-Williams and Lowes stores agree that Sherwin-Williams is higher quality paint that provides better coverage and durability. But, they also agree that the level of coverage and durability varies by paint line.
  • Each brand gets high marks for coverage and durability from independent reviewers.

Bottom line Sherwin-Williams is superior paint in terms of coverage and durability. Thats not just my opinion its what paint experts at Lowes and Sherwin-Williams stores and media outlets like The New York Times say.

Although Sherwin-Williams is more expensive, the price is offset by the fact that youll need less paint to get the job done and, in most cases, it will last longer.

Valspar is an excellent value if youre on a budget and keeping the cost low is your top priority.

Is The Paint Durable On Wood Flooring

I used Sherwin Williams Porch and Floor Enamel to paint a large wraparound porch on an older home that had already been painted many times. Like the basement floor I had previously used it on, the paint held up over time on the porch floor.

The existing layers of paint were peeling badly, so I first power-washed the loose chips and dirt. I let the floor dry for one day and returned with my Wagner Paint Eater to electric sand the whole floor and remove the remaining peeling paint.

Like the concrete floor I painted, I brushed and rolled two coats, allowing the first coat to dry overnight. The glossy satin finish of this paint looks very nice on both the porch and basement flooring I painted. Unlike the waterborne deck stain Super Deck, the satin enamel finish of this product is smoother and more resistant to dirt accumulation and stains from foot traffic.

Regal Select costs $66 per gallon on average, though the price can change depending on where you get it.

Choosing The Right Paint And Paint Colors

Choosing what type of paint to use is pretty simple: you definitely need to use porch and floor paint. Porch and floor paints are self-leveling and they are made to stand up to the wear and tear our floors endure as well as the temperature fluctuations outside.

Every line of paint has a porch and floor paint. This time I decided to try Sherwin-Williams porch and floor paint. When it comes to colors, there are hundreds of possible color combinations.

Keep in mind that if you choose two high-contrast colors, the stenciled pattern will be much bolder and if you choose two similar colors, it will be more subtle.

Also, keep in mind that you wont want to change again for several years so in many cases neutral colors work best. But, that being said, if you want a fun pop of color, go for it! Its just paint after all.

Our porch is quite large 12 x 35 so I decided I wanted a more subtle, neutral pattern that wouldnt be too in-your-face. I chose to use Sherwin Williams colors Snowbound and Grey Screen to create a white background and light gray design.

Before painting my floor, I did a test run by stenciling with my gray color onto a piece of white posterboard. I originally wanted to use a darker shade of gray, but when I did my test run, I decided it was too dark for me and chose a lighter shade instead.

What Is The Best Paint For Concrete Walkways Patios Floors & Pool Decks

Painting concrete floors is a great way to enhance your dull gray floor and give you that shiny, clean look that you’ve always wanted.

Throughout my years of experience with painting concrete floors, I have found the best paint to use is by Sherwin Williams. It is called the Con Flex Concrete Paint.

Another paint I have found to work well that you can buy through Amazon is by Kilz.

Help Porch Paint Peeling/time To Re

Hi there. We built our home 5 years ago. I have a large covered wrap around porch and porch steps that were painted with porch paint I bought at home depot. From what I can tell, there was no priming done. The paint has peeled up in so many places it just has to be re-done asap. painter told us he would pressure wash, sand, prime and paint it with Sherwin Williams porch and floor enamel. When I went to the Sherwin Williams store to pick a color, they advised me to use their Deck and Dock elastomeric coating made by duckback. Im concerned because from what I’ve ready, once this type of product is put on, its so much work to ever redo it with something else. I just want that shiny painted porch look that will last as long as possible. I know that what we should have done from the beginning is go with a solid stain but since we didn’t and the surface is already painted…Where should we go from here???? I can’t thank you enough for your input!

Why To Not Buy Any Other Paint Brand

Theres a reason its Benjamin Moore vs Sherwin Williams and not anything else.

These two paint companies spend a lot of money on research and development. They have a product for any need and project.

Theyre more expensive because they are of higher quality. Lower-quality paints need more coats and more labor. They also dont last as long, so youll need to repaint your house sooner.

    Choosing A Paint Sheen

There are different types of paint sheens, with some working better for certain spaces than others. For example, eggshell sheens are great for most rooms, while high-gloss sheens are better for cabinets and trim.

It may be best to ask one of their respective stores for advice on what paint sheen to use.

    • Sherwin-Williams adheres to strict VOC standards. All lines are < 50 g/l.

Mix Paint And Apply First Coat

After all the prep / clean work on the concrete is done, you can finally begin to paint!

Begin cutting edges with paint brush and 4 inch roller. Then, you can start applying paint with 18 inch roller.

Once first layer is applied, wait until the paint is tack free and dry to touch to apply the second layer.

*Make sure to follow manufacturers instructions for coverage rates.

    Varnish For Wood Floors

Polyurethane is the best varnish to apply to your painted wood floors. It will protect and seal your floors from scrapes and general wear and tear.

It works by creating a barrier over the wood flooring, which helps protect the paint and finish. It is fairly resistant to water exposure, high humidity, different temperatures, and fungus or mildew, making it a great varnish for your wood flooring.

Polyurethane requires re-finishing every 10-12 years. Youll need to sand your floors before you apply a new coat of varnish. This can be a pain, but its worth it for the added protection!

    Prime The Porch Floor

The next step is primer. Primer helps seal the floor and helps your paint adhere well.

Im a big fan of Zinsser Cover Stain oil-based primer. It seals in stains, sticks to pretty much anything, and works well over bare wood, oil paint, or latex paint.

Use an angle brush to cut in around the edges of your porch and then use a paint roller to paint the rest of the floor. This step goes really quickly.

    Todd Tribbles Professional Opinion

Sherwin Williams Porch And Floor Enamel Reviews

Ive used both brands, and they both work equally well. Its more about the quality of the paint than it is about the brand. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams are the best out there, and Id use either. Designers may have a preference, though.

Benjamin Moores Aura and Regal Select lines both have great coverage, and I love the fact that they both touch up very easily.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Designer Edition and Emerald paints cover great as well, and they both flow easily off your brush and roller.

Both products are consistently good and come with great customer service. Knowing the person selling me the paint will come out to the job site and help solve any problem that might arise is priceless.

Our clients ask for both and come to us with colors from both companies, so we are able to use a wide variety of paints. Whether you decide on Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams, if you stick with the premium paints for your next project, you will be well served.
