There are a few ways you can approach transforming your grass area into an edible garden. Some folks choose to completely remove their grass before changing the landscape, like we eventually did. In other situations, it may be possible to simply build or plant on top of the grass, smothering it in place. Or, you may choose to do half-and-half. For example, remove the grass only where a future raised garden bed will sit, but leave grass in the pathways between the beds.

Does Raking Help Grass

In short, raking the grass will not have much of an effect on the growth of your grass but this does not mean that raking is an unnecessary task. Indeed, while raking doesnt stimulate growth, it can remove certain obstacles that might be in your way when youre trying to get your lawn nice and green once again.

Manually Remove Grass With A Shovel

Ready to get digging? Using a shovel to cut and remove grass is a great choice for smaller spaces, or in tight areas with a lot of curves or obstacles. While slightly more laborious, this is also the least expensive option to remove grass. Even though our yards are fairly large, this is how we removed our grass. For example, our front yard had about 1000 square feet of grass. To make the task more manageable, we removed our grass in two phases. We tackled the back half with raised beds in fall of 2015, the front half closer to the house in fall of 2017.

Pull The Grass Burrs By Hand

You can pull the grass burrs by hand and dispose them off if theyve spread out only to a small portion of your lawn. This method tends to be slower, but its still more effective and you should therefore consider it if you have the time to spare.

First, wear your gardening gloves to protect your hands from the burrs. We recommend you get these COOLJOB Gardening Gloves if you dont have a pair yet.

They are durable, versatile, and fit most hands.

Now grab the grass burrs from the base of the plant and pull them out. Once youre sure youve pulled all the weeds from the lawn, collect them from the grass and dispose them off in the hidden wheelie bin.

Doing so ensures that the burrs dont take root and state spreading out again in your yard.

Allow the grass burrs some time to dry and then burn them in a fire fit.

Remove Mushrooms With Vinegar And Water Sprayer

Vinegar kills most types of fungi, including mushroom spores and mycelium .

You can use undiluted vinegar in a spray bottle for quick results, but make sure not to overspray because vinegar is very strong and can damage plants if used excessively.

Alternatively, you can dilute vinegar in water first before spraying it on your lawn 1 cup of vinegar per gallon of water should be enough for most situations when using this method .

To make things easier for yourself, place a bucket next to each mushroom cluster so that you dont have to walk back and forth between different areas when spraying the solution over your lawn that way you wont waste any time or energy while getting rid of the unwanted fungi from your grass!

Also note that this method should only be used as long as there are no other living organisms present in the grass otherwise it may cause harm rather than good!

For example, applying vinegar directly on top of worms or grubs may kill them too quickly or even prevent them from turning into beetles later on!

Treat The Lawn With Vinegar Or Salt

Apple cider and white vinegar contain acetic acid that can draw moisture from grass burrs. After some time, the burrs dehydrate and eventually die out.

Fill a large spray bottle with undiluted apple cider or white vinegar. Spray the solution directly on the grass burrs. Repeat the process every day until the grass burrs die out.

You can also use salt instead of vinegar to achieve the same results. In this case, sprinkle salt directly onto the grass burrs. The sodium content will draw moisture from the grass burrs, hydrate the plants, and eventually kill them while leaving your grass healthy.

If you like, you can mix the salt with baking soda to create a stronger mixture that kills the grass burrs fast.

How To Do It

Use a garden hose, string, or stakes to outline the garden area. Begin with a thorough watering to soften the planned garden area. Use either a half-moon edger or a sharp space to cut the sod at the edges of your new planting bed. Cut the area into a series of narrow strips using the spade.

Once youve got the edges and strips outlined, then its time to dig. There are many tools for removing sod, but a good sharp spade or shovel works just fine. Its a good idea to try to remove as little soil as possible, so keep your spade at a low angle in order to get the roots while leaving most of the soil behind. Toss the sod into a wheelbarrow or other container as you go you can compost it or use it to patch other areas of your lawn.

Removing A Lawn By Smothering & Composting

Smothering your lawn kills it and allows it to compost in place, adding valuable organic matter back to the soil.

Start by mowing the grass closely. Cover the lawn with a minimum of six layers of newspaper or cardboard. If you layer with newspaper, use paper with black ink colour ink can contain heavy metals.

Overlap the layers well so light does not get through to the lawn. Wet the layers and cover them with at least four inches of grass clippings, compost, or other organic mulch. In addition to adding organic matter to the process, this material will retain moisture and hold down the layers.

The newspaper, cardboard, and organic material will not increase heat in the soil like plastic sheeting would, but will block out light and stop photosynthesis, killing the grass in about two months.

This lawn removal method is another process that doesnt use herbicide. It has a low environmental impact. The layers will break down, adding organic matter to the soil rather than removing it. The process is not as dependent on weather as the methods using solarization or herbicide.

When the process is complete, you can use the soil right away just dig through the layers and start planting. As youre not digging up the lawn, there is less manual labour involved and youre not disrupting the soil. However, covering the lawn with several layers of material and mulch takes time, and you need to plan for about two months of an unsightly landscape.

What Time Of Year To Treat Moss

To Manually Remove Grass Using A Shovel:

• It is best if you have at least one flat-edge shovel used to easily cut clean lines in the sod.
• If you are removing only a portion of the grass, line with a rope, string, or spray paint as a guide.
• Starting at one edge of the area, cut a deep straight line along the grass. Use your weight to step down on the shovel.
• After you make each cut, stick the shovel below the sod to pry up and loosen it slightly as you go.
• Continue cutting parallel lines to the first one, about 1 foot apart.
• Next, come back through and cut lines perpendicular to the ones you already did, creating approximately 1 foot by 1 foot squares. If youre hoping to keep the sod intact to move and replant elsewhere, feel free to create larger strips to roll up but they get heavier than youd imagine!
• Now, use your hands to pry up and roll back the cut squares of sod. We try to shake out some of the extra dirt to leave it behind.

Place the loose sod chunks in a pile to move and dispose of later, or put them right into your yard waste bin, compost bin, truck, or other final destination. Because our grass was so weedy, we added it to the municipal green waste bin instead of our personal compost. Remove Grass With A Shovel

Use a shovel or spade to loosen up a border around the area of grass that you want to remove.

Dig the blade down a few inches, angling in towards the middle.

Work in strips the width of your shovel. Use the blade to lift them up. Once they are separated from the ground, roll them up like sod.
