Patio Umbrellas Recalled After Reports Of Catching Fire
A nationwide recall has been issued for SunVilla patio umbrellas after reports of them catching fire.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall includes all 10-foot Solar LED Market Umbrellas sold from Costco from December 2020 through May 2022.
The umbrellas have LED lights on the arms of the umbrella and a black solar panel battery puck at the top.
SunVilla has received several reports of the battery overheating, including three instances of solar panels catching fire while charging the AC adapter indoors.
There have been two reports of the umbrellas catching fire when the puck overheated while attached to the umbrella.
Anyone with the umbrella should remove the solar panel puck from the top of the umbrella and store it out of the sun. Do not charge the puck with the AC adapter.
The umbrellas and solar pucks can be returned to any Costco Warehouse for a full refund. Consumers can also contact SunVilla for instructions on how to receive a refund.

With its 11-foot diameter, thisHampton Bay patio umbrella provides a wide range of coveragemore than enough to shade our conversational grouping of outdoor couches. We usually avoid sitting on these couches during the middle of the day, when the sun is directly overhead and makes it far too hot and bright. But the umbrella completely shaded the area and made it a pleasant place to sit, even at high noon.
The canopy is made of UV-protected Olefin fabric, which is highly weather-resistant, durable, and fade-resistant. Thats why its often used to make outdoor carpets. We found the dense fabric provided deep shade and an immediate relief from the blazing hot sun. Its vented so that hot air trapped under the canopy can escape and so the umbrella wont catch in the wind. A large hook-and-loop fastener strap sewn to the edge allowed us to tie the canopy to the pole so it didnt blow around. It also allowed us to secure the canopy when not in use.
The umbrella completely shaded the area and made it a pleasant place to sit, even at high noon.
Types Of Umbrella Solar Lights
String Lights specifically made to clip to the ribs of an existing patio umbrella. Most contain cool white LED lights and come in a variety of sizes to accommodate any size umbrella. The solar panel sits atop the umbrella collecting the suns energy and the sensor turns the lights on at dusk.
Pole Lights Designed to slide up the umbrellas pole and provide downward light. Like the string lights, they generally use cool white LED bulbs. The number of bulbs determines the lights brightness and the solar panel sits on top of the umbrella.
Weve found a couple of really cool looking lantern string lights that are individually solar powered and clip on to an umbrella, tent, or just about anywhere you want. Easily add light to an umbrella when entertaining and unclip when not in use.
During summer months when the sun angle is high the lights will stay on a good 6 plus hours providing light well into the night. As the sunlight decreases so do run times so keep your location in mind when choosing solar umbrella lights.

Design: Bold And Beautiful
The base and poles of the cantilevered umbrella seemed giant at first, so we werent really sure how much we were going to like having such a large apparatus hanging around the yard. But once we set it up, it didnt seem as clunky we expected the arch shape of the poles is actually quite graceful. It makes the whole unit look a little bit fancy. When the umbrella is deployed, the giant earthy red octagon provides a bold and impressive statement along with a generous amount of shade. Its 11-foot circumference was enough to shade the entire U-shaped seating area comprised of three outdoor couches.
Once we set it up, it didnt seem as clunky we expected the arch shape of the poles is actually quite graceful.
As we mentioned, the base must be filled with 200-plus pounds of sand. This makes for a very solid and sturdy counterbalance to the weight of the poles and canopy. But because its so heavy and has no wheels or casters, it cant really be moved to position the canopy over a different area. Luckily, the unit is designed to swivel 360 degrees. If we decided to move the canopy to shade an adjacent area, we simply loosened a knob and rotated the arm of the unit.
