How To Build A Roof Over A Concrete Patio

Constructing A Concrete Roof

Design of a roof addition over an existing concrete patio in Bozeman, MT part 1

When considering the possibilities of constructing a concrete roof to protect against storm winds, it’s nearly impossible not to think of “The Three Little Pigs.” The classic fairytale tells the story of three porcine homeowners and their attempts to barricade themselves against an evil wolf who happens to possess hurricane-force lungs. The wolf makes short work of the houses constructed from straw and wood, but is unable to blow down the house made of brick.

An increasing number of builders have followed the third pig’s example by using greater quantities of concrete in home construction. Wood may stand the test of time under normal conditions, but it can easily fail if subjected to additional loads or uplift forces from high winds — wolf-generated or otherwise.

A concrete roof is exactly what it sounds like: a solid slab of concrete capping the top of your house. Exact specifications vary, but most concrete roofs are several inches thick. For example, the Florida-based company Hurricane Proof Systems offers a 7-inch slab of concrete in three layers.

A concrete roof also cuts down the risk of damage from fire, termites, fungi and water damage, While floodwaters might deform or float a wooden home, a well-built concrete home will stand solid. This makes the structure itself far more salvageable if worse comes to worst. In many areas, concrete roof construction also allows structures to bypass certain building codes and can also cut down on insurance premiums.

Keeping It Simple: More Ways To Improve A Patio

If you’re a beginning DIYer, don’t let all the details on our deck scare you away. Your project can be a whole lot easier if you choose a simple . The simpler you can make your plan, the faster and cheaper it will be to build.

Whether your patio is in bad shape or just bland, there are many ways to revive it. But before you weigh the options shown below, there’s one thing to consider

The crack factor: Cracks in your patio drastically limit your options. That’s because cracks tend to move. Some grow wider over time, while others shrink and widen as the soil freezes and thaws. Some become uneven as one side of the crack sinks. Any movement happens so slowly that it’s hard to detect. But if you knowor even thinkthat you have moving cracks, you have to choose a patio upgrade that can float over moving cracks without becoming damaged.

Do You Need A Permit To Convert A Patio To A Sunroom

Permits are needed in most jurisdictions for any type of construction, including converting a patio to a sunroom. This type of project is best handled by a licensed and experienced contractor. The company can navigate the building code requirements, protect against any injuries and damages, and fix any issues with the construction.

Building The Patio Cover

I realized, too late, of course, that I didnt take a good before picture for this project, but the above step 1 shot will do the trick, I think. You can clearly see the concrete pad we had to work with it measures about 12 feet deep , and about 24 feet long. It was also slanted, in order to guide water away from the house, but I did not realize how slanted it was! Chels said she had always noticed the dramatic slant , but upon measuring it, I found it dropped a full four inches from the house to the grass! Four inches over twelve feet was much more than I bargained for when I was drawing this project up on my notepad, and I knew that compensating for it was going to be a fair amount of work

The first part was relatively simple. Before erecting the 4×4s, I cut the ones closest to the house down about four inches so that the tops of the posts would be level front to back. I attached plastic post anchors to the bottoms of the 4×4s, and then secured the plastic post anchors to to the concrete using my hammer drill and nail-in concrete anchors. The plastic posts do a couple of things for you first, they make it easy to mount, erect, straighten, and level the 4×4 posts. Secondly, they keep the post itself elevated off the concrete just slightly, so the post base will never be sitting in water as time goes on.

Dont Spend All Your Money On One Cryptocurrency

Perhaps the most important cryptocurrency tip we can impart is not to spend all your money on a single cryptocurrency. By nature, cryptocurrencies are incredibly volatile. This means that the digital currency could be trading impressively well one day, only to crash the next day or only a few hours later. There have been instances in the past where people have lost their entire life savings during a cryptocurrency crash.

You want to try to avoid this happening to you at all costs, which is why its better to split up your investments and buy a variety of different cryptocurrencies. Do your research and choose three cryptocurrencies that you believe are offering the most stability and buy them. Splitting up your investments could maximize your returns or ensure you dont lose too much.

How Do You Build A Sunroom On An Existing Patio

You have two options for building a sunroom on an existing patio. The first option is to modify the concrete. This includes adding new concrete to bring the slab level with the home and increasing the thickness. Before you add concrete, youll need to remove some of the existing patio for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.

The second option is to build a wooden deck over the patio. This is the most affordable option. The contractor adds concrete to thicken the slab. This approach requires less concrete than trying to build a sunroom entirely on an existing slab. The deck can be built directly on the slab, or the design can include a crawl space for insulation, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. Although crawl space foundations for sunrooms are the most expensive options, you save money on utility costs thanks to the insulation.

Placement Of Header Determines Level Of Roof

Start With Ledger Board

A ledger/header board is the first step if you are attaching the patio roof to an existing structure. The placement of the ledger/header determines the level of the roof, so be sure it is positioned at the correct height and is horizontal. When fastening ledger/header boards to wood, the ledger should be held securely with bolts through the wall or lag screws.

Patio Roof Ceiling Fan Ideas

Construction of a roof addition over an existing concrete patio in Bozeman, MT part 2

Youll most likely use your patio when the weather is warmer. Installing a ceiling fan can keep the air circulating and your patio more comfortable. Look for a ceiling fan that is rated for outdoor use and try to balance the size and height of the fan with the size and roof height of your patio.

The ceiling fan you choose should enhance the space. If your patio space is large, youll either want to have a large fan or consider purchasing two smaller models. This will help the sir to circulate throughout the entire patio area.

When choosing a material and design, youll want something that is durable and matches the style of your patio. The most durable material for your fan is stainless steel, but its also the most expensive. For more affordable materials, consider fiberglass, aluminum, or plastic.

Once you know the size and material you need, your next step is to choose a design. A two-blade design will look sleek and modern. For a more traditional design, look for one that has three to five blades.

Cut Away The Overhang And Siding On House

If you have siding and a roof overhang on your house, youll need to cut those away in order to make room for the roof associated with your screened-in porch. The first part of this process is deciding and outlining exactly where you would like to attach the porch.

Next, you can cut away at the siding and overhang, setting the saw blade just deep enough to cut through. The goal is to cut through enough so that the innermost patio roof truss can fit against the wall, but not too much where youll have exposed siding. After youre finished, you can remove the siding and waterproof the slot with building paper.
